As part of an interview series with members of the community, I had a short chat with Gerald Abraham (LA Akira). For those unaware, the “Reignite Your Inner Fighter” trailers before VF5FS was released on consoles were made by LA Akira’s company Industry VFX. He also helped organize and run the VF5FS portion of Wednesday Night Fights (WNF), a local weekly fighting games tournament for the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. On December 13th, I asked LA Akira a variety of questions mostly pertaining to VF5FS at WNF, community support, and the upcoming SoCal Regionals on January 18th, 2013.

For those who can't get enough of Virtua Fighter and AM2 titles, there will be an approximately 2 hour Nico Nico Christmas stream (8 to 10 PM JST) with the Tetsujins: Shinjuku Jacky, Kyasao, Ikebukuro Sarah, and BunBunMaru. Tetsujins are the titles given to a small group of strong players during the 1990s that became part of the Virtua Fighter cultural phenomenon in Japan. They will be playing both Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown and Virtua Fighter 2. In addition, information on the last Model 2 Collection games that have not been released yet - Virtua Striker and Cyber Troopers: Virtual-On - will be on the stream. If you are interested in watching this later, you might want to check out the Nico Nico stream and registered for the "TimeShift."

Still need to get a gift for a friend or love one? With the upcoming holiday, several holidays sales and products related to VF5FS have been announced. The price for VF5FS has been temporarily reduced for the holidays. From December 18th to January 8th, the PSN version of the game is available for $9.99 or $6.99 for PSN+ subscribers (regular cost $14.99). From December 19th to December 31st, the XBL version of the game is available for 600 MSP (regular cost is 1200 MSP).

In addition, the VF5FS guide and move list application that was mentioned during the launch for iPhone and iPad has been finally released for 99 cents (in US currency). Tricky, who purchased the app, said "the app covers the system mechanics, gives you insight into Sega's understanding of their characters, and gives you all the frame information you could want."

The console release of Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown was "a critical and commercial success." Today, Sega and Level|Up Series announce the beginning of an annual Virtua Fighter tournament in North America - the Sega Cup. The very first tournament (PS3 console will be used for the event) will be held at the Super Arcade (Los Angeles, CA, USA) on April 20, 2013. There will be cash prizes given to the top 16 players. We will update with more information about the event as more details are given.

A month ago, I interviewed Avery Carey (GentlemanThief), a United States player from Florida. GentlemanThief finished 6th at Evo 2012 demonstrating exceptional skill with a game he had only a month to actually play with. I think one of the nicest compliments given to him were by some of the core Japan VFers asking if GentlemanThief had previously played the game in Japan. In this interview, I asked various questions related to his VF beginnings, Evo experience, goals, and his view on the community.
