"Im Saying that because your going to keep doing whats works until someone stops you from doing it. IF the opponent stops plan A you'll use plan b(If you have one.Whether its Setups or punishments) enough to condition your opponent so that Plan A become useful again"
Now since there's Fuzzy guard which create a whole new option (A slick little way to bend the rules in VF5 options department.) You'll need a plan C for exceptional players.

Somehow i believe its us the players who make VF5 seems like there's more to it then it leads on to be.

How is that good advice? He's basically saying that discussing Yomi means you don't have any. I don't think there's much logic to that.

Going through this thread I am mostly hearing people talk about adapting to strategy. But, that is not what I think of when I hear Yomi. When I hear Yomi I think of one of my old gaming buddies.

When Tekken 5 came out for PS2 (yes, I know this is a VF site but bear with me) I was playing a match in which I was using Jin. My buddy had never played T5, or T4 for that matter. Jin has a string combo that is 4 hits and the last one is low. I tried this combo on my buddy and he blocked the whole thing and countered with a throw. I knew he hadn't seen this combo before becasue it was the first time I had done it. There is a chance he could've been messing with me, but I don't think so. I paused the game, looked at him and said "How did you know the last hit was low?" He just shrugged and said "I just figured the last hit would be low."

The same guy also had an uncanny knack for winning in sudden death situations. Where both players will lose on the next hit. He, for some reason, came out on top in these situations more often than not. That is what I think of when I hear Yomi.

If an opponent shows you a low hit a few times then tries to trick you with a mid hit, your mind has real info to work with to analyze the upcoming situation. I think of Yomi a little more abstract in that you don't necessarily have previous information to go off of. It's just a feeling for what the opponent is thinking. That being said I think it is an instinct that can be trained and honed over time.

Hey pal, don't argue with someone who is motivated by the power of hate. Just play along. Harlem_Hater can say whatever the Hell he wants to, it doesn't have to make sense.

that is true thanks for derailing the itillectual conversation Harlem_hater. Please lets try to keep the thread on topic, if you just need somewhere to clean your sandy minge out go do it in the general thread and you trolls can have a troll war or something with each other.

I think Myke so far hit the nail on the head the hardest in terms of my own position. He just said it a lot better than I did.

Konjou, I don't know if this is an act to go along with your new name, or what.

But whatever it is, it's not welcomed here and I would have thought someone like you would know that.

Slide, I know you've said that you feel your point is lost or confused, but I still want to respond to some things you said.

Are you sure about that? I think there are scenarios in the real world and in VF where people aren't aware of their choices.

Another way to put it is: if someone already makes bad decisions when it comes to drugs, you're argument seems to be that they will always continue to make bad decisions?

You're not able to read until you're first taught. What you should be saying is "we all innately have the ability to learn how to read". This is where the nurturing kicks in.

Probably sounds like I'm splitting hairs now, but I still have this feeling that you and Tricky were kind of debating different things (Have vs Being Good At) and actually agree with eachother.

I'm argumentative by nature but it really does sound like we do agree with each other we just said it differently. way to go myke for clearing up slide and I'd actual agreement.

You said that your friend hadn't played T5 or T4 before, but I'm willing to bet he's playing other fighting games before? He's probably seen and experienced multi-hitting strings that end in a low before? Because if that's the case, then he did have some "previous information" to base his decision on, no?

This is also why, as others have mentioned, that coming from another fighting game background can be helpful in the "yomi" department, because you're familiar with basic concepts of attacking, defending, guessing, conditioning and reading your opponent.

In general, I think people are still confused about Yomi. Personally, I really hate the word. When I read the word Yomi more than once in a paragraph or post, I feel violently ill and want to puke /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif The reason I hate it's use so much is that people start to mysticise it like it's some psychic jedi mind trick ability that the Japanese invented, and it borders on being outright pretentious, IMO.

Yomi is simply the Japanese word for reading. Why can't we just use the word "read" instead? Reading one's opponent is a skill that's prevalent in just about any competitive game, from poker to straight up RPS. When you understand the rules, then the more you play/train/study/learn/experience, then the better you'll get reading your opponent.

Note that I don't have anything personal against people who use the word yomi. I'm just airing a private frustration and, as you can see, I've resigned to using it as well.
