    Hey now. /versus/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
If you've read the thread, there's a damned convincing argument that the best character to start with is the one you enjoy the most, both aesthetically and stylistically.
Kage is a good character to start with just as much as anyone, as long as you are interested enough and willing enough to commit to learning the character you choose. Personally, I'm tired of Ninjas. Just MHO.
My first character in Evo was Goh (who I never mastered -- I got bored), followed by Shun (who I've gotten really good with, but with whom I'm still developing), and now Aoi (which is really tough to get used to after Shun . . .) I chose Goh cause he uses Judo, which is a lot like Jiu-Jitsu, in which I have a little experience; Shun because 'Drunken Master' is my favorite Kung-Fu flick; Aoi cause her moves look so damn painful, that and Aikido has always fascinated me -- a martial art revolving around defense entirely. Wow! /versus/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
And if you want to discuss who best covers the basics and shit like that, your argument is fundamentally flawed. The characters and their styles are so different that if you wanted to grasp the basics, you'd have to understand the special properties of all the attacks very well. By the same token, everyone has moves with standard effects, but they all have strengths in some areas and weaknesses in others. This usually involves the setup, frames, or the way the move appears: many are deceptive. The beauty of this game is that the characters are so diverse. Learning any one character won't help much with learning another (as I am coming to realize.) Learning to play the game and manipulate the system is vital to learning any character, but every character uses the system differently. Basically, you have to relearn how to do things with each character. (except recoveries, blocking, throw escapes, and other universal techniques.)

In short: (since you guys love brevity so much . . .)
you need 2 lurn the char best suited to u if you do this you will do well and have fun every char is diff so just do em 1 by 1 and you will figre everything out so go try the one you like most and you will doo wel /versus/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
