Really, you'd think they would have just run the final match-up yesterday. I guess there is some sort of ceremony for all the games at the end, though.

    3 days for a 6 man VF tourney :p

    Day 3: Monday, September 1st - Finals

This was the day of waiting. More than ever. I checked out of the hotel and went down to the venue for around 10:30am. This gave me a chance to simply chill out a bit and get settled for what appeared to be a long day - the schedule indicated the VF5 Finals between Yamamba and myself were going to be held at 2:30pm. We were the second last game to finish. Barring any hiccups with the other tourneys (likely!), this was a couple hours later than the original itinerary had indicated and I had to make a few phone calls to book myself on a later flight.

To put this in the most honest way, when the moment finally came to have our finals, I lost to a player who is better than I am. Yamamba is a very good VFer and I'm glad he's in the Toronto area so that we can add him to the small group of VFers that we have. Like I mentioned earlier, he has spent the last year in Nagano teaching english, and this is where he learned to play VF5 (must be nice!). Before coming back to Canada, his Vanessa card was 9th Dan - imo, that's quite good - and it showed today. Our matches were well fought but he had an edge on me the whole time and I struggled to solve his Vanessa over the short stint of tourney play this weekend. She's a tough nut to crack and Yamamba did a great job. Congratulations to him on earning a spot to represent Canada at the Grand Finals in Germany - well deserved! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

    Final results:
    Gold: Yamamba - Vanessa
    Silver: Llanfair - Pai
    Bronze: mAcHiNe - Pai
    4th: Skwisgaar - Blaze
    5th: MistaKennedy - Akira

One of the positive things of the weekend was our constant advocacy to the newer VF players to find VFDC and dig a little deeper into knowledge of the game. I made a point to have my handle at the WCG event listed as "Llanfair VFDC" and for every match I played, the announcer would call it out over the mic as "Llanfair VFDC, Virtuafighter.com". So I thought that was great and perhaps may help stick in people's minds when they pick up VF and wonder where to find more info.

Lastly, the Canadian Director was really great and he came up to me yesterday to find out more about VFDC, the Canadian VF community, as well as how we can run VF5 tournaments better in the future. One of the things I suggested was to make the VF5 component a Team Battle. I'm envious of the Halo and CS teams at this event - they really have a great time and there's a lot to be said about being at an event like this with your friends and teammates. Certainly, more conversations are needed over the coming months, but I'm hoping through him that we can also connect with the international WCG organization and ensure the VF5 stays on the roster for next year and that we can give it more profile than it got this year.

Well, that's it. WCG Canada VF5 in a nutshell /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif Once again, a huge congratulations to Yamamba for winning this event. Best of luck to him at World's! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

So, what happened in Montreal? I think the majority of people at WCG were literally the only people who showed up to their regional qualifiers. I know there are more VFers in Montreal than mAcHiNe - so, how do we potentially look next year to getting the VF community to make the effort to attend qualifiers and compete?

I had a few hostings at my place, but I lost interest when my version (ps3) was no longer the up-to-snuff version. I know it's rather petty, but hey...

VF5R, if it comes out, should reignite my interest and hopefully I can reconnect with the old crew to get a few matches.

We should try and arrange some sort of Toronto-Montreal crosspollenization super party. I think that new opponents would fire up some interest.

    Thanks everyone! \(^0^)/

It was a great fight and I'm glad to join the VFDC community. Congrats to Llan on his Silver too. I would love to rep the TO crew with my Vanessa.

But again I'm happy to be welcomed into the VFDC community. I'm looking forward for some good fights (^_^)/
