if you're considering co-specialists, i'll nominate myself for Taka since there are better options there for Lion anyway...

When I first read that I wonder whether Marly had told him that or not. Now I know, Marly DID NOT tell him that. I wonder what's with all the volunteering of other people?

Then you definitely did the right thing by withdrawing your name. VF is not a game that you can casually pick-up and start owning everyone in 4 or 5 months. It sounds like you get your psychic boost from winning and not from learning how to play better. Lots of people are like that. There's nothing wrong with that, this is a game, playing it is totally optional.

Personally, I like playing people that I can't beat because they expose holes in my game and they do things that I haven't though of yet, or am not well-practiced at, but that I have to do if I am going to beat players on their level. That makes me better. Unfortunately those players are normally like me and eventually get board of beating the crap out of me. So they go somewhere else to find someone who will in turn beat the crap out of them, and make them better.

People that you can beat all the time teach you bad habits. They fall for things that should not work, and won't work against people at your level.

If you are putting the game down already over losing online matches then you either don't have the love required to play the game much less be a character specialist OR you are playing too far away from your skill level and are getting frustrated.

As Marly said, and as Myke said, being a character specialist isn't about the ability to play the game online, or offline, for that matter. It is about the will to condense different aspects of one characters' game into one readily accessible reference point. You have to play the character just enough to know whether something is good or garbage when you come across it. Other than that, it's more about working with other people than it is about the ability to play.

I'm actually taking it as an opportunity for me to learn more about the character. When people get together to exchange ideas, everybody gets smarter.

I couldn't agree more. That is exactly why i put my name in for Shun; to learn more. When FS came out, that was the first time i have ever really played anyone else with it. VF4:Evo on ps2 and VF5 ps3 werent online. I think it's great to play against others. Do I get frustrated when i get rolled on? ABSOLUTELY! but it just makes me want to get better. So lets do this thing and increase our hive knowledge of our respective characters. I think one of the greatest things about this community is that damn near everyone is about helping others, that is why i am here, to learn and help learn. and that is a big reason why this game is great.

It's the same reason why I put my name in for Goh. Sure, I have past experience with the character and I would like to share my ideas/setups/combos, but I also want to learn from other players. It doesn't matter if they've played longer than me or have only played for three months, if they have something to contribute and it's legit, I'll post it!

I feel much the same when it comes to Goh. I've posted and helped others on GameFAQs when it came to Goh tips, methods, and combos, and I feel that I could help on a larger scale by contributing here + gathering the information posted here to aid the cause. It may look like I'm not here often, but I've had this account for 2 and 1/2 years, and my first post here was signing the petition to bring VF5R here to the US back when that was a thing. Now, I see an opportunity to help with the gathering of information for my main character, compiling it together, and going from there to help others get better with him and in VF in general. My experience with Goh may help from my own contribution standpoint, but I've seen people who only played VF5 and VF5FS do things I haven't seen before, so it's always good to gather ideas.

What took you so long to nominate yourself numbers in all honesty you are very likely 1 of the most qualified people for that position at least in my eyes anyway

I was reluctant to post this because it's no secret that I think that having a different color for names is cool. You're just going to have to trust me: This isn't about the color! [IMG] I honestly want to know how people on this site will be able to tell which members are the character specialists. Instead of a color change for the name, will a thread be stickied in each character section naming the specialists? Newer members could benefit from this, as they'll know the people to whom questions and private messages can be addressed immediately.

Again, as I understand it the purpose of the position is not to be the all-wise 'character X' sage-guru at the top of the mountain who can answer all your questions if only you can reach him. It is solely for the purpose of collecting info about the characters in readily accessible and easy to find places. I don't believe it was his intent to focus the questions toward certain people. (It seems to me that you want questions aimed to the general forum to encourage discussion and multiple points of view) As such, I don't see how it would matter whether or not a reader knew whether person X was a specialist or not. If I misunderstand his intent, I ask him to correct me.

      Honestly, it sounds like

      1) Myke is 13 years older than he was when he started the site and thus doesn't have as much free time as he did 13 years ago. AND

      2) Maintaining all this info takes a lot of time and dude needs help.

The only thing that I think could be helpful would be the ability to sticky a post in the respective character dojo. A specialist may be trying to solicit info on a specific topic, and could use the ability to sticky said topic. However, that can be easily worked around by having the mods sticky topic upon request of the character specialist.

I understand what you're saying. However, I still think that it would be useful to have an easy reference of who the specialists are for the general population. As the specialists would be maintaining the Wiki sections (Right?), they should be contacted with information regarding any mistakes or omissions. I know the author's name is at the bottom of the pages, but guys like akai have contributed a lot of general information for characters. People could just read the names on the pages instead of contacting the specialists. I think that guys like Myke and akai would get less messages from people regarding mistakes in the command lists, Wiki sections, etc. if they had a list of specialists for each character. Not a big deal, but a convenience.

Threads in the character sections would be the best way for people to know. I don't like the idea of colors for names because we have, I think, 19 characters now. If we had two specialists for each section, then there would be 38 people with unique colors to their names. And to make it worse, even if a specialist was identified by the colored name, there would be no way to know his character.

You should add colored names as an option for donators, if you ever set up a donation page or whatever. Colored names would add some variety to the board, just like customizations in VF, not to make you stand above others, but whatever if you like it so bland. Other message boards have this option and don't take the ridiculous view that it somehow makes you better than others because your name is in blue [IMG]

A bunch of folk donated to VFDC before just for the sake of giving back to Myke. I don't think anyone needs any colours or fancy titles outside of the administrators and moderators. Also, LA's Star player is cool. Something like that for people who give a lot to the VFDC community would be nice.

Edit: in regards to who the character specialists are, if I get in on the Blaze forum I'll clean up the general discussion stuff and let folk know who to contact if there are any problems.

No color needed, but it's cool to put specialists names on the section they belong to.

No, you won't require skills outside being able to use your browser and fill in a basic form in order to edit the VFDC Combo Database.

      This!

      This!

      This!

My original intent was that users didn't necessarily need to know. I also don't want the Character Specialists to be additionally burdened with special attention via PMs and such. As soon as something becomes a chore, then people tend to get turned off by it.

However, I also see benefits of having them identifiable. The main one being is that with the "power" comes "responsibility", so other people can see if they're doing a good job or not.

      This!

      Sooooooo this!

Great idea! [IMG] Character Specialists will also have the ability to sticky topics within their sub-forum.

OK guys, I think we have enough nominations across the entire cast to get this started. I'll be convening with the Moderators to decide on the inaugural Character Specialists.

Just as a heads-up, initial responsibilities will only be for the VFDC Combo Database and general forum/topic management.
