Just caught wind of VF5. I didn't expect it at E3 this year. I was thinking next year fall Tokyo Game Show. But whatever it's still all good.

I'll say what I said on SRK, best news at E3 since Okami.

Just got back from the show myself, got to see the VF5 demo.

Basically, the characters look like more detailed versions of the VF4 models, whereas the models looked pretty different from 2 to 3, 3 to 4 etc. They are new models with more detail, just seems like AM2's decided they like the look of the characters from VF4, for now at least. The closest thing I can compare the look to is the opening CG for ps2 T5, where they show many of the characters against a kind of single color background, posing or whatever. They're really heavily lit, with even more shiny-ness than Evo (look like they've got oil on them). This could be to show off the lighting against the bodies of the characters.

Akira was doing the kind of Kata things they like to have him do in cut-scenes, none of the moves looked like real commands, whereas Sarah's demo seemed to consist mostly of kicks from her current command list; but all of this was new animation. Both of them were moving much slower than gameplay speeds, but not in slow motion at all, just not the gamey high speed that we're used to (kicks that take 1/4 of a second). Especially in Sarah's case, this actually gave it a much more realistic feel, like she's kicking the way a real person would. All of the movements looked really fluid, the animation was the real standout to me, as it was the first time I saw VF4. Akira's demo ended with a new version of the "Jyu nen haiyai..." win pose, with his arms folded and kind of cocking his head while he says it, Sarah gave a really boring "Thank you".

The stages were really nice, and have a different feel from the Evo stages, which I'm glad about. There was no undulating terrain, but the rings were all open, RO style stages, and the egdes weren't so clearly defined in the demo like they are now. This kept the stages from having the "every stage is basically the same" feel that Evo kind of has, and felt more like SC2 or VF3's stages to me. The first one as far as I can tell was kind of outside Akira's Dodo, with a lot of Bamboo around, really green. This is one of the stages they changed from day to sunset in real time. Next was a kind of indoor hall, which looked round with tall ceilings, with a kind of library feel, it reminded me of Lion's VF3 stage, but darker inside, really Euro feel. This stage was really nice, and felt more like classic VF stages than the Evo stages. Also, this is one ring that while flat, I couldn't make out any clear cut shape of the ring or drop-off RO ledges (maybe I missed it, but it wasn't obvious to me). The last stage was another Asian outdoor motif with some buildings. This may have been the first stage again, I'm not sure. Old asian buildings, lots of trees, green and brown tones.

I do think this is the in-game engine, and the girl announcing said so when I was there, like others have said. It looks like what I'd expect from Sega's new arcade board, and makes sense given that they're showing arcade games with this demo. Overall, it doesn't look as wild as some of the 360 stuff that people are showing (even at a horrible frame rate, Gears of War looks totally insane); but, it's a fighting game, how much more crazy can graphics of two people in an arena get? Any of the small traces of polygons that are still present in arcade VF4 are now totally invisible to me in this vid.

I'm sure the footage will probably pop up after E3 and after Sega is done showing it in Japan. It'd be really obvious if you taped it, that theatre only seats about 20 people. Start saving your $ now kids, this hardware doesn't look cheap, and I think this game's coming to arcade sooner than we may have thought.

Thanks Spotlite. Did anybody say how far done this was? Was it just a tech demo of sort or will VF5 actually be like this / close to coming to arc (well maybe not megaclose but say come winter)?

^ Awesome. The more I'm thinking about it tho', it's probably just an early look at what they are going to do for next gen rather than VF5. I still have my doubts of a graphically-arcade-perfect VF on console, seeing as how AM2 is just crazy like that.

I just want them to bring back the Chicago Stage this time.

You've hit it about right; no one at the show was like, "Here's VF5." Rather, the way the clips were presented were simply as glimpses into the next generation development of several titles from japan - I think most of us are simply drawing logical conclusions based on what was shown. We probably saw less than two minutes of each game, and nothing was shown in true game form, i.e. front ends, huds, or anything of the sort.

That's retarded. VF 5 is in the works and it's asinine to think that they'd waste time showing us stuff they don't plan to release. (Overview of stages plus character animations? Hello?)

Is this in response to me? I didn't think I said they showed stuff they didn't plan on releasing; I said it wasn't presented as VF5, it was presented as "demo footage." I said everyone who saw the trailer and posted here was drawing the logical line - that this is in fact VF5 stuff...maybe I'm reading you wrong?

Sorry... that wasn't a flame to you, but rather a general statement saying that Sega would be fucking stupid to tease us with no intent on releasing these titles in the future.

Edit: P.S I vent because I've been a die hard sega fan (not just VF but other franchises as well) since the begininng and I just feel they suck so bad on the business end of things.

Too bad there were no gameplay clips. Hopefully they will reveal more information when the new arcade board is revealed. That's supposedly happening in Tokyo today.

Well, so far from reading the reports from Japan, there haven't been an announcement for new hardware....

There's a new card based gundam game... a new horse racing game, mahjong, quiz/prize game etc..... but no VF...

Looks like the E3 footage is braded by Japanese media as VF5, and rightfully so.

Completely understandable! I'm also a pretty big fan of Sega properties in general, and I would have to say after quite a few years of questionable business decisions (sports anyone?) and embarassing moments (E3 2004's miserably somber "booth") it was really cool to see Sega in a somewhat respectable position again. The press can't seem to get enough of Full Auto and Condemned (and rightfully so; those 2 games are exactly the kind of thing the kids are eating up right now), and Shadow the Hedgehog will certainly be another home run for them this year as well.

What was most surprising, though, had to be the japanese next gen stuff. Out of all the stuff I've seen, I really feel their lineup is one of the strongest. It's really along the lines of what Nintendo should have done (and they probably will do, next year) to show off the RevolutiON. Expect alot of "Sega's Back!" and "Welcome to the Next Level, Again!" headlines for Sega stories in the future.

Dre, I've been combing the net as well for news about the Sega Private Show as well...I can't find a thing either. Strange, since 3 of the 4 next gen games they showed (VF, HotD, and Afterburner) are certainly shoe-ins for arcade releases.

My prediction is that the current models/costumes are high powered versions and placeholders from VF4...actual VF5 would have different and hopefully more detailed looks.

okay, guys can you answer a question for me .

normally e3 is for the console market rite?

normally a new fighting game such as vf5 would go for the arcade market first correct? thus vf5 would be shown at a expo catered for the arcade crowd.

So why would vf5 be shown at e3 (the console market,) when no info has been given first on the arcade scene?

dont get your hopes up guys. VF5 is a loooooong way out.

and to add salt to the wound when vf 5 comes out in the arcades, itll never come to london................. /versus/images/graemlins/confused.gif

While E3 is not, by any rule , a console-only show (Namco in particular used to regularly feature their fighitng games in cabinets in their booths), it is consumer product-centric. My guess is that VF5 will have a similar launch strategy to that of Tekken 5, which was on home consoles some 6 months after it first showed up in arcades (and, coincidentally enough, was also shown first at E3 2004). I remember VF4 being a distinctly poor seller on home consoles in Japan due to its popularity in the arcades, thus I imagine any console release will be catered to the western markets, which probably will not see an arcade release of VF5.

I also predict a VF5 arcade release this year, which would create the possibility for a console release in the next 12 months.

I just wanna clarify, the models shown in these demos were 100% new models, with way more polys etc than the VF4 models, and the faces etc ARE different. It's just that they don't have the kind of "new era" look to them that we're used to.

Whether these are the final models or not, who knows. Even for VF4, the models faces etc changed from test versions to the final version (I have an old version A movelist card where several of the characters faces are different).
