Phantasy Star II and IV are two of my favourite RPGs of all time. I kinda wish they'd do a new one in that style as well, but they probably won't.

It's no surprise to me that they're more popular.

Those are Reno's impressions? Sound like he's still trying to adjust to it but so far isn't that happy with the game. Most of his problems seem to be with the balancing of Taka and some of the big characters in the new system. More emphasis on strike mixups (better lows?) over throw mixups is not something I particularly like the sound of. VF's throw and defense system is part of what elevates VF above other 3d fighters for me but they don't sound as good in FS.

Really can't understand why he thinks T6's customization system is better than FS's. It varies a lot from character to character in T6 but generally it's not that good (tons of colour variations mostly). I think VF5's is better but FS's must be miles ahead of that by now with everything they've added since. 6 interchangeable outfits per character with many items tailored to each compared to 2 with the same items for both.

I think I said as much in the first paragraph, that my views are swayed by the fact that I'm still learning how to play the game... :X

Yeah it's a fair and precise rundown or early review imo. It was a very quick and enjoyable read and I am thrilled Sarah is now above average. She was down right awful in VF5 vanilla, so it's nice to see her go top tier. Personally I was never a fan of the big characters in VF to begin with so no big deal to me. The throw system changes are interesting as they've simplified escapes, but counter balanced it with one input, instead of many.

    Good informative breakdown.

I agree with everything Reno said about how the big characters are a lot worse in this game (exclude wolf) because the lightweight is doing the same damage now and there's only 3 throw inputs. I don't know much about Taka but i'm pretty sure Reno can agree that he was better in VF5R, I on the other hand when watching videos of Jeffry in FS, R, and Vanilla I can easily see how "malnourished" Jeff is currently.

I thought the article was very well written, an excellent read.

Wolf is the best character in FS, it just isn't fair to compare him to riff-raff like Jeff and Taka.

I been said that lol!! Its not fair to Wolf or all Grapple characters. I did'nt mind the fact they had a greater chance to Throw you given its their specialty.

Honesty... Im really not into this game anymore. Now the novelty has wore off. I want to play R more than this.I'm not fiendin' to have dumbed down VF anymore. Everyting that Dudes write up said open my eyes. I knew this feeling would come but i never knew it would be this soon. Thanks Sega It was fun while it lasted.

    What's dumbed down about FS?

There have been past discussions in here on the implications of the revised throw/throw escape system. I don't want to regurgitate those discussions, but I thought that most agreed that the changes were done to favour the guessing game, and less the dexterity/mechanical game. Changes that hopefully lower the barrier for entry to new players which, I'm sure, everyone agrees is a good idea.

So where has the throw advantage gone for a grappler? Their throws hurt more! Your odds for guessing the correct throw escape is arguably lesser now in FS, so their damaging throws are, on average, going to be hurting you more.

Of course if the game comes out, he'll play it. Bet it. Just more bitching about a game most people on here haven't played or will play.

I know but its little things im seeing thats make it seems like that. Myke im not bashing this game at all but i want this game to reach the masses so it can bring it more players but if they did'nt join it then they won't join it now.

Bitching? I rode this all the way and commented on plenty people Bitching about the same game but that article raised thoughts in my eyes. When it comes out sure i will have it but im not waiting for it anymore when it drops it drop. Enough Speculation with the game. I doubt you even pay attention to the article.

Yeah how much of a difference is it really gonna make? I'm disappointed in the removal of MTEs, I liked the combination of skill, knowledge and guessing it involved and it was satisfying to get it right. The guessing part of it varied greatly depending on the characters involved but now it's homogenized and seems less interesting.

I think 1 of the the main reasons people don't play VF is because it doesn't look flashy enough and the characters don't appeal to them. I'd much rather they took more steps in this area to get people playing. The reason I play VF over Tekken for instance is all to do with preference for it's gameplay and balance and nothing to do with Tekken having animals, robots and flashes of fire and lightning on impacts.

I don't wanna bash the game without playing it though (and I really wanna play it) and some of the changes I do like the look of. The new movement system seems much better after VF5's rather sluggish feel and some of the new moves and stances are looking very impressive. I'm assuming there's gonna be different strategies and ideas opening up and hopefully they'll compensate for the loss of MTE's.

I can't agree about the VF customization lacking compared to Tekken's. Both can make their characters look real goofy and have big joke items, but when I want to make my character 'normal' looking or 'cool' looking, I find it much easier to do in VF.

    But, that's totally opinion.

Id say VF5 has more customization than Tekken 6BR. (I have both)

Right On!! I seen a lot of things in VF5 FS so far itemwise that blew me away. The think VF has it beat.

@Shoju. Yes i want to play it and im not bashing but after the initial hype wears off and you left to do more analyzing you realize life goes on a bit. I for one thinks the characters look nimble and beautiful on thier feet. I love the new backdash animation and consequence for getting hit with it.

I can't help but still want to play R i guess.

    This is bullshit.

Grapplers' throws have always done more damage. That's a non-point. What they had before was that not only did they throw you harder than other characters, they threw you more often. What's really been damaged is situational strategy. Part of the fun of fighting against a grappler was adjusting your throw escapes. You had to decide whether to dedicate an escape direction to the rare [2] throw, or defend against a no-damage [1] throw that, just at that moment and player/stage configuration, could cause a ringout or a world of hurt. Defending against these was high risk, high reward, and high specificity, because the directions weren't as overloaded as the most common ones.

That guessing game is simply gone. Everything (save the single neutral throw, of course) is now distributed between two highly overloaded escape directions, so the risk, reaction, and knowledge involved in dedicating yourself to those defenses is nullified because escaping specific throws also escapes all those non-situational standard throws in that direction. That's what's dumbed down. That's what's brain dead. No matter what you choose, at any time, against any character and in any position, it's a safe choice because you're automatically eliminating a good number of other plausible throws simultaneously. You can only distribute so many throws by damage and property amongst two escape directions in so many ways.

You're arguing that this change is a purer guessing game, and somehow for the better. Yes, FS is more pure, but it was the adulterations in the formula that made the throw escape system VF4/5's crown jewel and more interesting than RPS. There was real character knowledge and situational awareness involved on top of and enhancing the basic mind game it's been pared down to, and where you saw some insurmountable barrier for new players, I saw fun. I'm not arguing the manual dexterity point; if you want to keep MTEs out and stay at one, go ahead. But there was no good reason for the homogenization and simplification of the throw directions.
