Keep me informed... and thanks for the offer to share. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif But I thought this was for this coming weekend, not the first weekend of Oct. I might have old VF friends visiting the Boston area that weekend. Itazan is huge incentive, but I'd rather catch up with old friends if possible. We'll see... either way I can look forward to a good time. =)

lol i saw that vid a while back but yeah that was pretty fucking crazy. That was probably the equivalent of the Daigo comeback. 1 character vs an entire MSP team? Too good

I think a lot of people don't play VF because there's no arcade version of it in the US. People say arcades are dead in the US but all the big games that are currenty being played (with the exception of GG) can be found in some sort of arcade in the US.

^I was sitting in the front row talking to my friend when it happened. I'll never forget it. I whispered to my friend when Justin was down to Cyclops saying "This match is done."

All throughout the comeback I was like "I don't believe this!" then when he won me and my friend just looked at each other mouths agape. "JUSTIN WONG!" /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

That doesn't explain why Smash is so popular. It got the second highest entries at Evo world this year.

Ok ok ok hold on...do you think it's fair to compare the Smash community to the rest of the fighting game community? The audience that Smash targets is totally different than the audience that other fighting games target (imo). That's not to say Smash isn't competitive or anything like that. I have a lot of respect for Smash players (the finals at evo East were crazy). How many Smash players are there that competetivly play other games? I know a lot of T5 players that play VF,3s,MvC2, etc. A lot of people who play these games sorta grew up in the arcade so to speak. Which is kinda the reason (IMO) that an arcade release tends to make or break a game's scene as far as fighting games go.

Look at SC3. Namco went straight to console with the release of SC3. The end product was a game that was full of glitches which eventually led to more than 75% of the community just dropping the game altogether.

I guess my point is (as this pertains to VF) its a lot less of a committment to go to an arcade and spend 50 cents to play a game of VF than to buy a ps3 and purchase a $60 game only to realize you don't like it.

In regards to Smash I guess you could just say its not the rule it's the exception.

Not to derail the thread (can you derail the VA thread?) but Millionz is right. Smash is completely different from the rest of the fighting game community.

Just look at DoA and SC for the proof. Neither are in the arcade (at the time when SC3 came out) and neither can really ever break 40-60 marks AT ABSOLUTE BEST.

And let's be honest, PS3 is A LOT OF MONEY for just one game, add in cost of sticks if you have to play on one and I find it easy to believe that VF isn't going to have big numbers, besides the usually sega conspiracy theories and people not being motivated.

    in conclusion....

    ...but it is... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

Also, I think Virtua Fighter isn't as popular in the states because it never received the full arcade backing that Namco gave its games. That's also why Soul Calibur 3 failed. Tekken 5 didn't fail because even though it never got a true arcade run, updates were being made and made available to the public in the arcade, PS2, PSP and PS3. Virtua Fighter is a little harder to get into, but is a great for competition and with online play and hopefully online updates this is a community that will stick around for a little while.

Is there anyone else around the world that plays Smash at high tournament level aside from America?

Smash has frame data so it makes it a fighting game OK
