    Hey Mark,

I've seen your posts here and on GAF and I was in San Diego for college. You guys have a great Tekken scene down there and I have a lot of respect for all of you. You guys work hard to make your community strong, and that's something that we can do here as well.

Keep playing Tekken, and VF! Enjoy Japan, the scene there is out of this world! Let's bring the players, both here and in Japan!

Oooohkay, who's as confused as I am? The March Arcadia says:

    1. Gundam - 254.3 / pts.
    2. Guilty Gear XX Acore - 236.3 / pts.
    3. Tekken 5 DR - 200.3 / pts.
    4. Arcane Hart - 148.2 / pts.
    5. Melty Blood - 144.2 / pts.
    6. Virtua Fighter 5 Version A - 114.2 / pts.

What the-? According to Arcadia VF5 has been getting owned the past quarter. Does anyone have any special insights into these rankings? Why do they fluctuate so wildly? And why is VF5 still being listed as Version A?

January was when VF5 ver.B was released, right? I think they differentiate the two games, and as such caused the numbers to go all out whack for that month (similar things happen whenever a Bemani game gets an update, the earnings numbers for the game get split across the two versions).

Last Arcadia ranking shows that VF 5 is nr. 6 in the list and VF 5 has never reached the first place since the release.

I think it's pretty clear that VF 5 is doing pretty bad in Japanese arcade. Guess Japan prefers Tekken 5:DR now.

Latest 5 VS 5 Tekken 5:DR tourney in Japan had more than 370 entries with guest from Korean top players. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

VF5 tourney at the time didn't get as many entries because there were TWO big VF5 tournaments running in different locations in Japan at the same time.

If you combined the number of entries, it rivals the number of people at the POPY Tekken:DR tournament.

The two things that bother me about the rankings are:

    - Version A. Why is it still Version A?? Implies that Arcadia isn't counting on a like-to-like basis.

    - The HUGE fluctuations in points they keep track of. When the standard deviation is that high, usually what it says is that differences are due more to random sampling.

BUT we shall see and frankly it doesn't make a difference to my enjoyment of the game.

i know this is a joke, but it actually sets me up for a very good point:

any and all marketing done in the united states (for video games) is completely based on what the parent japanese company feels is in its best interests. with the loss in translation, cultural misconceptions, dollars required for marketing, time constraints, soft costs, one can imagine just how difficult it can be to be soa with it's position on marketing a product.

even IF soa had an idea that would completely turn the US market around, the parent company would have to agree to it, which they probably wouldn't do. even if they did they would probably alter the idea in many ways nullifying it's effectiveness.

given sega's experience in the US with it's previous products, it's no wonder that they hold such a conservative attitude toward the market here.

This man speaks the absolute truth. Even if you design your ad campaign stateside, your budget, demographic targets, sales goals, etc. almost always come from the Japanese side of things. Unfortunately there are very few marketing types in Japan who really understand the marketplace outside of their home country.

you also have to understand that they got screwed with the Dreamcast. they spent a ton of money on advertising the DC and PSX just dominated. They had so many failures from sega channel, the 32x, sega cd, and to a lesser extent the satturn. Their only guaranteed product is Sonic and even that isnt doing to good nowadays, but it still gets advertising because it is almost guaranteed that it will be bought. too many people feel nostalgia towards the blue rodent and his twin-tailed friend

Now ever since sega began working on games exclusively, they have produced a lot of great games, but they have to wonder how good the games will do stateside/period. they had to pretty much throw out everything they know about advertising and start from scratch.

they are doing good with their 2k sports titles , but the nfl contract with the madden games hurt a lot. football is the most popular sport in america and their "budget" games that were just as good as their counterparts sold like hotcakes. why would you pay 50 to listen to john madden say a bunch of BS when you could get the same/better game for 20 and without madden?

but anyways, just spread the praises of VF everywhere and sega will notice. if it is advertising you want, you will most likely get it this way. Unfortunately Sega(at least SOA) uses reverse advertising(advertising for games that usually dont need it), but you cant really blame them.

    Just some fact checking.

sega sold 2k line (visual concepts) strangely enough to 2k games, they used that money in turn to buy creative assembly (total war series) and silicon knights (eternal darkness). Also another reminder that sammy is the parent company now, and it seems the pachinko company wants to move into the western market with these recent developer buys.

I just saw from virtuafighter.jp that Version B was released on December 15, 2006. That makes the Arcadia rankings for January through March really odd in that Version A was counted in the survey and Version B nowhere to be seen.

Can't we accept that the game is unbalanced, esp in terms of damage?

I mean, well...at least the dragon punch combo is easier to do, watch out Jeff! Another move coming your way ^_^

Arcadia charts are out for this month.

VF5 (now Ver B) is still in 6th place. Guilty Gear has two entries. Gundam is unstoppable. T5:DR continues. Six out of top ten are 2D? KOF2K2?

Well Tekken is an easier game to play first off. But its also deep enough that "expert gamers" can clearly be defined.
