I like the ideas you came up with but I don't think Taka should be very difficult to unlock. He's already considered ''unpopular''. Some ppl might just think he's not worth the effort. Especially if they have to unlock everything with every character. If anything I'd say you can purchase him at a very high price or something. If we wanna see more Taka players, I don't think he should be that hard to get.

From what I recall, the early interviews with VF5 developers - there was a video available a while back - clearly indicated that their interest in bringing Taka back was next to nothing. The effort to incorporate him into the VF4/5 engine is too great.

I wouldn't hold your breath in seeing Taka.

I do however think it would be pretty awesome to have online play, although I highly doubt it will ever happen. I'm still not so sure that the online latency is sufficiently low enough to have a match be as it would be should you be offline.

Graphically, which I remember was one of the main reasons if not the main reason, you would think that it shouldn't be too hard to pull off now on Lindbergh or PS3. As far as the fighting engine I really don't see where they're coming from !? They did a great job with VF3 now all of a sudden, YEARS later with newer and better technology, they can't figure out how to incorporate him in the game ! Doesn't make sense. Someone needs to have an indepth interview with AM2 about this whole Taka mystery. But you're right I won't hold my breath on that.

Online play? never! because ur losing the arcade-feeling and second yes the latency is too bad atm /versus/images/graemlins/frown.gif But i hope u can spectate maybe some arcade matches or dl replays from arcade-matches or share ur replays with ur friend that would be great.

Too much work. You can already see the problems in VF5 with greater size differences and throws (grabbing air, clipping right through each other). Taka would be a nightmare.

I think it was akiralove that once mentioned the main problem with incorporating him into the engine. In VF3 (especially TB), the main way of comboing against Taka was with bounce combos. That is, rather than floating him because he was too heavy, he'd just fall and you'd continue to combo off the ground.

With VF4's tech rolling system, Taka would be able to nullify these combos. So if he can tech roll almost everything, how do you deal damage to him in a combo? It'd be like trying to combo Dural.

Well, a solution could be to make Taka float higher than Dural but lower than Jeffry. But maybe this would be contrary to AM2's original design for a super heavy weight Sumo wrestler and without a clear solution to implement him into the new engine, decided to leave him out.

So yeah, who really knows? I remember reading an interview where someone said that the reason for Taka's omission was that graphically they couldn't process his flabby skin or something. Bloody ridiculous! /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The answer is not allowing him to tech roll.

Which will confuse beginners and cause a lot of players to not want to play him. Why go through the pain? Might as well dedicate resources to a new character that fits the system. Aside from Taka's weight, there isn't much about his play mechanics that would be unique in VF4/5 anyway.

Myke's right, that was the reason I was given by Yamagishi and Chibita when I asked in Japan. When I asked Yu Suzuki @ E3, he just said it was because Taka "wasn't popular", which is a lie. Several of the current/VF4 top players were Taka players, like Edo, Kurita, Tokyo Megane etc. And everyone knows that Kurita won the Java Tea Cup. I think if someone asked AM2, they'd just come up w/ some BS PR answer. They're not gonna publicly say "well, to be honest, we just couldn't figure it out".

I think that they should do like Myke said, to make him heavier than Jeffry, but not un-comboable. I also think Dandy's idea could work. I wouldn't worry about Beginners, they probably wouldn't choose Taka anyway. Another choice would be to have Taka get something like a Butt Stagger when hit w/ floating attacks, but certain fast moves could be guaranteed. So if he got hit by something like Jacky's 33K, maybe 6PK would be guaranteed, or you could play a guessing game with P -> Throw etc. Like getting hit w/ Jacky's 46P+K I guess.

I like the idea of a character being unique w/ regards to the way they play. IMO at the moment AM2's idea is to make all the characters the same for the sake of "balance", but I feel that it's at the cost of the flavor of the characters.

I think Taka was more interesting and unique than either of the new characters, and I think the proof is in the pudding: Taka was so unique and different from the other characters, they couldn't even figure out how to keep him in the game anymore.

You guys came up with some pretty good ideas if you ask me but for some reason AM2 can't seem to do the same !?

just reduce Taka's weight. In VF3 he was way too big.

Sumo's come in all sizes, small, mediu, fat, super fat, hyper fat

Just reduce Taka's fatness to Ganryu's fatness and Taka should work as fine as Jeffry for size

Wasn't there a statement that he will be unlockable in VF5, maybe?

I'd like an option where you can pick an ai to fight and then fight a best of a set number of matches with him with the condition that you've beat him before or if you haven't beat him but you've fought him, you can challenge him after you've become the champion at his arcade. Maybe there could be special items only winnable in this context when fighting specific ai's like chibita, ohsu, homestay etc.

that's right /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif this reflects a problem that exists in this industry as a whole, and only seems to be getting worse: the disconnect between people who make games and the people who play them. Most of the people making games at the moment just aren't very creative I think. Those that are can't seem to get enough corporate support to get the nice ideas out to broad audiences, so the games fall on deaf ears, which validates the idea that corporations shouldn't bother supporting original ideas.

Personally, I think this is why we're going to see a kind of "culture crash" soon in the games industry, because I think that the older generation will soon become dis-interested in the content being provided, and stop buying/playing games alltogether. I haven't bought a game in over 6 months, and I can't see much on the horizon that seems interesting (with maybe the exception of FF12, Yakuza). Even these games are just new takes on well-established formulas.

You can't just assume AM2 hasn't already thought of these ideas, and possibly more. Even with the ideas suggested here, I can see potential problems with them. A lower float than Jeffry may be too low to combo anything decently and would upset the character balance. Not allowing tech rolls would be an inconsistency within the system. But allowing him to tech roll is probably contradictory to the idea of Sumo, and maybe AM2 feel passionate about it or something (if you can't do it right, don't do it at all). I mean, in Sumo wrestling, once you hit the floor it was game over!

Applying different hit effects, as akiralove mentioned, in place of a float is probably the idea I like best. Along with heavy staggers and such, maybe you could have Taka crumble instead of float.

But again, who really knows why he was left out? Until we get a satisfactory answer, all we can do is speculate.

The online game for the hardcore gamer is not a good thing , but Sega have to do a try .

For taka, you can get around the float problem by giving him worse recovery options. Make it so he is suspectable to chaining hits together or has a worse side step or something. A little outside the box thinking and I believe Taka could work.

There's so much outside the box thinking that I'm sure has taken place in countless meetings for countless hours over at SoJ.

Did no one else see this interview? Taka is not going to happen.

Enjoy Taka and undulated rings and the E-button and TB as some of the wonderful things VF3 brought to the series. VF5 won't suck because Taka's not in it.

Here's what I'd like to see in a versus mode for VF5 on the PS3: VF.net. While I agree with many that latency will rule out actual online fights, I don't see why it would be impossible to implement a PS version of VF.net. Your PS3 has it's own IP, just like the individual Naomi2 boards do. Create a central PS3 VF.net server and you've got something good -- beyond of course development costs. But it would be cool.
