    Hotels

I'm down for all of us trying to get rooms in the same hotel, maybe even in the same section if possible...

I'm gonna call each of those places listed by Dom, and any others that I can find, and will post up rates and discounts for staying fri/sat of the tourney... I should post this stuff up by this Friday (7th).

Btw there will be a sizable amount of us from Austin repping, but since our access to evo is limited, dont expect mind-boggling comp. We're still a "namco fanboy" state here in texas so hopefully this tourney will give texan gamers some exposure to the VF4 appeal.

Limited Access to Evo? I know the sticks suck, but that machine at Le Fun was workin' when I was there. No excuses! Represent for my home state!

    Le Fun

Not any more... the right side has no down at all (been so for 2 weeks, management knows) and the left side has extremley precise left/right angles... but, playable I guess against the CPU. Hopefully we'll be getting the import asap and get some practice in.

a little recommendation. Seems like there will be a nice turnout, but PLEASE!!! make the brackets a certain way so that players from other regions will play against each other for at least the 1st couple of rounds. I would really be upset if I drive all that way and I find out that I play more of the same socal players than players from other states. Also are we able to switch characters or do we stay with the same charcater throughout. If there is a vote I say One character throughout, but its your decision. - Brian"with an I"

There is a way of ensuring you play other people - it's quite simple too. Have a round robin to seed who goes into the brackets. What we do is called Ironman Round Robin. One person sits down and plays everybody. The the next person sits down and plays everybody. This way, everyone gets to play everyone twice. Also, everyone gets to play 'warm' during the round robin - know what I mean? At the end of the Ironman, you count up the total number of wins for each person and seed accordingly. For ties in Win #, we then count how many rounds those people lost. Works *very* well and is, imo, the best method or organizing the brackets.

    cheers,

we experimented with round robin here in LA before, we didnt seem to like the idea after the grueling 6 hours was over.

Fair enough, the time can be extensive. However, if you can come up with a fairer way of determining who plays who in Round 1 of a double elimination, I'm all ears /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Question about how Iron Man works...

Say we have 32 competitors. We number everyone 1 to 32. Person 1 sits down and plays person 2 through 32. Person 2 sits down, they've already played Person 1 from the previous set of fights. So, do they play person 1 again? Or do they skip person 1 and just play person 3 through 32?

If there was no skipping, that would be 992 games consisting of 2 to 5 fights (depending on whether we go best of 3 or best of 5)

We should have multiple ps2s running, but this could still take a while.

I do think we should have seeding matches.

    Re: Iron man

The way we have done it is that you play everyone twice, once during their iron man, and once during yours... However, Iron Man matches are only one 3/5 round match, not best 2/3... That speeds things up a bit, but it would take a whlie with 32 people... Maybe we could split up into two or three groups and then run iron man within them... but then the question arises, how do we divide people into groups? /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

    Re: Iron man

Exactly. The best thing to do to save time would be to split the the 32 people into two pools. This would have to be divided up randomnly - put 16 red tabs and 16 blue tabs in a hat a have everyone reach in and pick one out kinda thing - in order for it to be fair. Random is random, so variation will be a factor, meaning it can turn out that one pool appears to be stronger than the other, but that's the best you can do with time constraints.

Ultimately, with 32 people, what you would want to do is run the Ironman on one day, and the double elimination on the next day. This way, you'd get the fairest seedings possible as you could run it all as one pool.
However, with help and some coordination, you could run a 32 person ironman on multiple machines. Everyone would have to be on the ball, that's all.

    cheers,

Why don't we just pull names out of a hat. And if we get someone from the same State/Crew we just draw again.

Multiple machine Iron-man sounds like the best solution to me. Spreading it out for 2 days might be more practical, but I'm not sure how long they reserved the place.

    Re: Iron man

If you do Ironman without true randomness, then you are defeating the purpose of the competition. Ironman is about being able to defeat as many people as possible. No matter if they are part of your crew or not. It's not a team battle.

    Re: Iron man

I was talking about doing without a Ironman and doing a random draw for the seeding instead. To save us a few hours.

speaking of team battle, id rather do away with round robin iron man seeding in favor of a team battle tourney.

Agreed, I would prefer a 2 or 3 man team tourney.

    Re: Iron man

    Hey guys,

Although Iron Man may not be the way to go, I don't think Team Battle is either... the event wasn't promoted as one, so I don't think it should be turned into one...

If anything why not have totally random seeding for the double elimination.. Sure you might get stuck playing someone you know, but it -is- fair if it's totally random... And two days isn't an option because Rich and I (and I'm sure other people too) are scheduled to fly out of Texas on that Sunday...
