Just a completely outside third party's perspective. I find it very interesting that you're actually making groups. Normally, groups are created randomly, and you get who you get. Unless there's seeding, which it doesn't appear to be the case for your tourney, purposely created groups are difficult, if not impossible, to exist without imposing bias.

Just my 2 cents (from organizing more tourneys in VF than anyone on this board). Not flaming, just commenting. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

    stop flaming /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif
the way I see it if groups were random we might get some silly groups like an all london or manchester group, the way it is now it is a good balance for demographics, imo if course /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif , having said all that I'd go with anything tbh.

In essence, there certainly is a seeding going on but it wouldn't be obvious to anyone who doesn't know any of these players. (ie players involved do appreciate there is a form of seeding going on).

The reasons I'm doing things lke this are several...

    1. To ensure that decent (ie top tier) players don't face each other too early and knock out others who would have stood a good chance of winning.

    2. To try and put a stop to guys travelling 200 miles or whatever and ending up playing the same old faces they do back home. Admitedly in each group there are a few players who know and play one another already.

    3. To avoid arguments/bitching. Last time we had one this big a few "big" names went out early (some after travelling all day or so) and weaker players progressed further due to some bad match ups.

    4. There's actually been back up from other players for me to do it this way so everyone gets the most out of the day, which, is what it's all about.

yeah, i prefer it the way it has been done. it would suck if we had two groups full of londoners, a groups full of mancs and a group with the scots and me and andy. it would be a waste of time. plus, it stops the chance of having all the best players in Ryan Harts group and all of them losing, and then some worse players going through to the semis coz their groups were shit!

besides, i don't see anyone who is coming making a fuss about it, we all appreciate the chance to play people we haven't played before.

I couldn't agree more with your reasons - in fact, I had assumed them. I will however add further comment.

Imo, entering a tournament and gathering to play are two very different things. So, when I travel to play in a tournament, I have made the commitment that it's not about playing against new people, etc., it's about playing whoever's in my way to get as far as possible in the tourney. If I want to play new faces, and avoid the people I play with all the time, then I'll achieve that in pre-tourney/post-tourney gathering play.

Also, maybe it's because there's little tiering amongst our group in Toronto, but on the day of a tournament we always have a round robin to seed. People have great days and off-days and this will, appropriately, affect the pre-conceived seeding that one may have. I can safely say that seeding from my experience in round robins has always led to some very exciting results that make the day that much more enjoyable.

Lastly, I have always been a fan of double elimination style bracketing, thus allowing for the chance of two strong players to meet early on and should they continue to play well, they may meet in the finals.

Sounds like it will be a blast no matter how you run it... /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

yeah, the thing is, over here, ther are people who are obviously better than others, (Ryan Hart being better than everyone), so it would be stupid to put all of the good people in the same group, instead, we spread them out, and put a few other players in their groups.

Yeah, thanks for your comments, it's always nice to hear what others think.

I think one problem we in the UK suffer from is so few players and the fact that the players we do have, exist in very small pockets as far as I'm aware.

There's the Manchester group of 3/4 with a couple from Leeds, 2 from Bradford which is near Leeds, a few from Edinburgh and then pretty much the rest down south in London or there abouts.

If anything, with this "tournament" I'm attempting to bridge the gap between us all as we all exist in small localised pockets and have never played many players who are registered here or who we know of through word of mouth via arcades and the such.

Also, the whole thing will be a 2 day (or 3 day in my case) event for quite a few as we've groups of players travelling on the friday to meet and play through the night. Then we have the saturday where even more will be travelling to play and there will be time either side of the tourney for players to meet, chat and play.

I think in our case, since the support for VF is so small, people want to travel, almost solely for the reason of playing fresh blood or to at least play as much VF as they can within the overall group.

Having a round robin on the day to tier things does sound good for our future gatherings I think so I'll bear it in mind (thanks for the tip) the only problem with it this time is the staggered arrival times of players (we're looking at 9 on the saturday till maybe even 12 before some peeps can make it to the venue), the length of time we can use the facilities for and the length of time people can actually stay for, since public transport is often not something to depend on in this country /versus/images/graemlins/frown.gif.

Anyhow, thanks for the tips and ideas on how to run things, it's always good to hear from others in the VF community.

Cheers for the PM Chris. Please can you tell me what characters RandomHajile, Geewai_Ho and Jun
use. Im gonna get whooped fist heat arent I? Just as long as I can play some other Lion players during the day. Oh yeah, I will be coming on the Saturday in the morning. Not sure what time but will let you know nearer the time. Just one thing-the winners of the first heat get only one game before one of them gets knocked out. How about first to 2 games so its completely fair. Maybe not enough time but would be good as we have 2 ps2s there. Just a thought.

random can use most characters but mainly kage, geeho uses pai (and also a bit of vanessa), and jun uses wolf and a bit of brad.

Jun plays Wolf, G_Ho plays Pai and I've a feeling Random plays Kage mainly (?).

I should have told you that all matches are first to 3 wins (ie outcomes are 3-0, 3-1 or 3-2).

The top 2 of each group go to a knock out in a way already discussed elsewhere...so we have 8 players in this "quarter final". 4 are knocked out straight away, then we have a "semi" and then "final" and then the "3/4 place" fight but the fights are always first to 3 wins.

The way it works out, we should be starting around 12.30 and finishing around 15.30...then we're also having a mini SF2 tourney on one tv and the rest will keep VF on.

Oh and we have 3 ps2s this time...maybe 4 we'll have to wait and see.

Yeah, after the tourney has been wrapped up (and the HSF 2 one) then we can have some random 3/4 man team battles or something, depending on who can stay around and make it.

Then we can finally have some North v South UK media!
