What??? Dude, Japanese LOOOOOOVE Americans, specially if they have blonde hair and blue/green eyes. Just look at most RPG's, specially FFX where the main hero is is an almost Godly glorification of a blonde haired/blue eyed boy, lol, remember the God-awful scenes where he would come out of the water in slo-mo? Everybody knows most of those CG scenes were borderline
homo-erotica (not that there's anything wrong with that, to each their own).

Anyway, for those that took my humorous observation seriously, did you see that laugh face at the end of my statement? Yes, it was a joke.
But while we're on the subject, has anybody noticed how Jacky, Sarah, Kage and Akira had been top-tier up until VF5?
Maybe they decided to give the true masters of Martial Arts (Chinese) and Mixed Martial arts (Brazilians) a chance to hold the crown in this installment... something to think about... not argue about like little kids arguing about which Power Ranger is cooler.

Now all they need to do is make a Samoan fighter to represent Polynesia.

Sega could make a fighter based on Mark Hunt and his uncanny ability to eat punishment. They could make his style and moves based around this attribute. If you throw a HLK to his head, he gets an energy boost for free. He could have a move where he sticks his chin out and if you punch him with any kind of high punch or elbow, he gets a free auto punch to your dome, Dudley style.

The only way he can be beaten is if you put a Kimura lock on him.

    LOL!!!

I meant Sega has it in for americans. Not that I actually believe it, but it seems to be a common sentiment on these boards.

Sega doesn't do as well here in the states as they do in Japan. THAT'S why they dont treat us the same. But it's not just Sega, most Japanese game-making companies do NOT release all of their games/peripherals/game music/etc. outside of Japan because they lose money or dont make enough of a worthy profit. So in all actuality, it's OUR fault that we dont get the same treatment as the plentyful, faithful, grateful and monetarily generous Japanese gaming community.:)

But I'm specially proud of Sega because in this installment of VF they actually swallowed their pride and did NOT have a Japanese fighter as one of the absolute best fighters in the game... unlike some other Japanes game companies that always have and still do, ahem, CAPCOM, I'm talking to you.
    That's right... I went there.

Hell yeah Capcom's eternal J-rule (teehee) is bugger annoying. SNK having their mega stereotypical American hero is kinda funny and sad at the same time. But Terry was put aside for Kyo as poster boy in the end.

    Tony:
I'd like to see a Dutchman in a fighting game for a change (or any game), but then, with so many countries in Europe huddled together, Martial Arts originating elsewhere and other countries carrying much better stereotypes to use we haven't got a lot of chance in the Low Lands here. Maybe in some ten years, after our K-1 reign has become legend we'll see something happen. Can I make Brad dark enough to create Remy Bonjasky, I wonder. Or white-out Jeffry and call him Schilt? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Don't give Sega too much credit.

You make it sound like tiers in VF are similar to tiers in Street Fighter, which is totally not the case... and you know it /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I highly doubt the tiers are intentional on their part,
I mean they need players feedback to determine the tiers in the first place,
so it shows how much the programmers know.
As for making the Japanese character the stongest/coolest I think they just go with whats the most populat choice (in Japan) and what will ultimately make them money, to think anything else is imo laughable. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I know Sega is nothing like Capcom, in a lot of ways (thank God), but the main star in most Japanese or American made games is usually always Japanese or American looking. Not all of the time but usually all of time. I look forward to the day when the lead character in a FF game is Hispanic/Black/Native American/Indian/Eskimo/etc.

But it's like optimus said, they have to go with what makes the most dough.

(sidenote) For all Latinos out there that always wanted to play a game where the main guy is a Latino, check out "Just Cause". It's not the best but it's worth a rental and it's at least a step toward a more diverse video-game-lead-character world.

    P.S.
Props to Sony for making 2 games where the main characters are Polynesian. Mark of Kri (awesome game) and the sequel.

Vanessa isn't Brazilian anyways. They describe has as American in the manual. NOW, that doesn't mean that is where she is from, only that is where they put her as. Why would you guys assume Brazilian anyways?? I'm guessing that Vanessa isn't black anymore thread.

First off, I hope you guys KNOW that Brazil has the largest African based black people population outside of Africa. YES that means more than the United States. Obviously popular culture will play down that fact, but it is fact.

2nd, Just because someone doesn't have stereotypical nappy hair doesn't mean they can't be Americans. and just because someone has straight hair doesn't mean they have to be brazilian or someothing else. After all, Beyonce, Alisha Keys, Vanessa Williams, Eric Allen (Football Player) and so on will show you that there are alot of variation between what is categorized as Black among African American people. Also, you will find that even in some countries like Haiti and Jamaica. There are quite a few people who from YEARS past, had American Indian Mixed with Black, along with white, and over the years, that Very Straight, or Curly but not Nappy hair has always passed down through the generations.

As for why she has white hair, and even lightened up, chalk that up to the fact that in popular culture of games, and comic books. There really has never been too many "true" black women portrayed. IE... Storm was what again? oh yeah white hair, blue eyed, Any Fighting game has any stereotypical black girl???? Exactly, it doesn't exist. From SF3 african girl, to DOA, to VF.

There is no question that in Anime there is a tendency to make characters look caucasion, and there is no question that the lead characters in fighting games either is japanese and LOOK white, OR IS white. IF not that, then there is a chance that it will look Japanese, BUT NEVER any other categories. IT will be a LONG time till we see hispanics and blacks. It will probably be a genre game like DEF JAM, or a game that eventually is produced by an African American based game company. Till one exist, good luck looking for that.

FINALLY, as for TIERS, I don't think the game people TRY that hard to make one character better than the rest. And even if they do, it doesn't always pan out, as due to various limitations, glitches, cheats and so on, often times a different character is top tier. For those mentioning Capcom, Ryu is NEVER top tier. due to glitches guys like Dhalsim, Guile, Chun Li, Ken, and others all had their time on top in tiers. In the Vs. guys like Cable, Sentinel, Magneto, Storm were tops in MvC2. And Also, TIERS are a factor of how much skill someone has and the skill level you play at. As WE all know 99% of the Time Dhalsim is bottom tier no question about it. BUT in the hands of someone who can take advantage of Dhalsim's cheats and Skills, does he then belong in the top tier in one particular game, but tell that to the masses.

It's second largest density of Blacks. Not second largest amount. Brazil also has the second highest desnity of Japanese outside of Japan. Even had a Japanese president at one point.

I love how many fighting game-tier threads turn into long diatribes on how Japanese hate black people.

Oh I think you may be right. It has had Japanese members on the cabinet before though. Here's an interesting site I just found if anyone's interested lol.

I only recall all of this cause of a high-school teacher who harped on this topic to death... lol.

For real though, on topic, I know some will even argue that of all fighters, VF really doesn't have "tiers" in the way other fighters do. But for the sake of discussing "tiers", I just cannot agree that Jeffrey is so low =Q He's a beast, both intimmidating and ruthless if in the hands of a decent player.

I agree, KrsJin, tier lists are not that as much of a factor in VF as in other fighting games. It's funny that you should mention Jeffry 'cause, back in the days I would never think about picking him since I knew that I would get my ass handed to me in a dixie cup, but now, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shocked.gif holy shit! I am really considering playing him seriously. I named him Juggernaut and his quote is "I'm... UNSTOPPABLE!!" Just like Marvel's Juggernaut says in his opening line in Capcom's Marvel Superheroes.
You're right though, he is definitely a force to be reckoned with now.

I like how people try to pretend that VF5 doesn't have tiers when it's already been decided by the big big timers that Shun is top, Pai is below him, everyone else is mid, and Jeffrey is pretty much bottom. In my experience, I agree. Although I may actually put Pai above Shun personally.

    Anyways...

People, VF doesn't need excuses to be the best fighting game. So stop spamming "This game is tier-free!", because it doesn't need that excuse to be better than the rest. It just already is the better game.

Fine we won't retro-actively spam a month ago. Nice logic.

No, tiers exist, but they aren't MvC2/Tekken 1-5 tiers, no character is invincible, every character can win.
