Theory why PSN plyrs in Ranked Mode Right Now

I don't know if this was mentioned before but did anyone notice on XBOX you can see quality of connection before going into a match but on PS3 you have to go into the ranked room first? I saw this on Haunts stream and I'm a little salty as to why Sega would allow this.

First night on PSN for me and this made it really difficult for me to judge which games I should join, I actually had to join a match and then wait for the connection icon to load before I decided whether to play/leave the match.

Not a big deal imo, just decline if you don't like the connection.

Its actually a major deal for PSN for me. There are basically no Finnish players who bother with ranked, only like a couple, so its pointless to use "same area" filter on PSN which filters only your own country.

On Xbox its made much more sensibly for having "same area" mean the entire Europe.

Because of this, I have to use "worldwide" filter on PSN to get any matches at all, which in turn means that the player list shows people from EVERYWHERE, up to and including Europe, Russia, USA, Japan, Australia and frikkin South-Guinea. Now add to the fact that latency doesn't show in the playerlist on PS3 (Like it does on xbox), I have to manually go through every person on the list to find someone I have decent connection to, instead of, like, seeing it instantly.

This is just one of the myriad other cases that show that Microsoft actually knows how to design stuff, as opposed to Sony. Im not sure they even train those monkeys they have as designers in Sony anymore. I guess its all about cutting expenses.

It doesn't matter anyway. It seems people just dodge rank matches once you blitz them.

Thats the only problem with ranked, people are so obsessed because of deranking, they dodge, don't fight etc, really hard to find opponents once you are Warrior.

And please more gauge increase if someone beats a higher level opponent, if someone has the skills to do it, why not give him some reward??

Simple solution, once you reach Defender, deranking to Barbarian not possible, once you reach Warrior deranking to guardian not possible etc.

Eveyone would be happy, more and better fights between equally skilled players too

The ranking system in general is pretty.. odd.

As far as I could figure out, the amount of "experience" you gain or lose is a Gaussian curve. You win/lose the most against opponents of the same rank, the second most of opponents one rank above/below you, the third most of opponents two ranks above/below you, etc.

Obviously, your win percentage against opponents of lower ranks are greater, and lower against opponents of higher ranks. So the best way to rank up is to always fight opponents that are a little weaker than you are, and never fight opponents that are a little stronger than you are. Which is, frankly, bloody stupid. You ideally learn the game (or any game) by playing people that are a little better than you, after all. And that's exactly what the ranking system punishes. It's so damn annoying.

I'm an Assassin right now, it doesn't make sense to me that if I lose to another Assassin, I lose a massive amount of points (or whatever it is...that bar), but if I lose to a Berserker (one rank below me), I lose almost nothing...

And vice versa, if I beat an Assassin, I gain a good amount of points, but if I beat a GrimSlayer, I gain.......literally nothing...

What exactly is Sega trying to encourage here? Seeing as how less than 1% of the online population is in the DoomSlayer and above category...those guys must be pretty bored [IMG]

I think they wanted to make sure that, say, a DoomSlayer should not be afraid of playing (and losing) to a Hunter, losing a massive amount of experience because of it. A Hunter might be a really good player, after all, who just did not play enough games yet. So in that way it makes sense.

It's just that there are way, way better rating systems that both take this into account and aren't as stupid as this one. Modern rating systems have an uncertainty factor, and the more uncertain the system is about you (either because you played barely any games yet or because your results are extremely varied) the less experience matches with you will bring. Why they didn't implement something like this here.. frankly I can only blame laziness.

The ranking system works, but only in theory, I'm Berserker right now, and no Warrior/Veteran/Berserker wants to fight, everyone just dodges. and there are not many Warrior/Veteran/Berserker online anyway, so ranking up with Hunters is tedious.

Fighting a higher ranked opponent above Assassin is also useless, they only fight if you are easily beatable, once you beat them, they simply run away LOL.

Its pretty hard to find someone your own rank or higher. Im a Avenger and its going to take a long time to rank up. It doesn't do any good fighting anyone below you unless you are in the same group for example, Hunter,Raider,Barbarian. I can only find Defenders or Warriors and sometimes Assassins. I want to become the highest rank on VF5FS. Most of my friends usually stop around warrior and don't continue. I would love it if anyone here is a avenger or higher and add me so we can rank up!

I enjoy ranked mode as it's where I can find opponents. Being a Jeffry player, spammers do get their strikes out, but defensive minds adapt and overcome the onslaught. It's fun smashing the offensive holes, then scaring them into other nonsense.
I cannot say I'm aware of the higher ranked shenanigans as I'm in the lower Dan ranks yet. However, regardless where I stand I could care less about what rank I have attained. As long as I learn something every time I play, that's all that matters to me. I'm aware some gamers feel they have to cling onto a rank because that's what sets them apart from the rest, but really all one has is a name. As long as there is one to spar with, they'll be ok in my books.

On Live you meet all sorts of players and styles in Ranked, then if you like what you see, you can frequently invite them to one-on-one 10 set matches in Player, without worrying about rank grades, which seem to take ages to go up, unless you're really good at it, and can go down in just a handful of matches, losing to good Dan or Kyu players who may well be on 2nd accounts.

Ideally, you will have plenty of VF players on your friends list over time, then with the mic or texts, you can set up 3, 4, 5 person Rooms during peak hours.

Just on the point about Sony and VF. Well, PS2 may have had the incredible-for-the-time Evo, but obviously that was offline, so sadly cut out all sorts of global players getting comp. When part 5 hit the 360 with Live support in like 2007, it was a really big deal, and now with FS, it still is! Dismissing Microsoft consoles just comes across as posturing snobbery, and ludicrously so, when you see all these reports about lag and droppers on PSN. The truth of the matter is, Xbox has been the place for wonderful SEGA console and arcade ports since Panzer Orta, the Smilebit games, the English dub of Shenmue II, the best port of OutRun2, and of course, in more recent times, Bayonetta (flawed on PS3) and for 5 years, online VF.
