The SciFi channel has made Episode '33' (Season 1 Episode 1) of Battlestar Galactica available for free, uncut and commercial free, online at SciFi.com. Also available are deleted scenes from the series. Is this a ploy by the SciFi channel to grow a viewer base as well as loyalty, or an extremely bold move since the series isn't even out on DVD yet?

    Donated from Slashdot.org

Need latest version of RealAudio Player installed. Hopefully, more media companies will do the same. No more having to wait for season dvd versions. Cool. Not sure if it will work with dial-up (since it's streaming video), but works great with broadband. Also FW effect has not hit it yet. /versus/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

    Enjoy!

60 Minutes slated to tackle game violence
Upcoming CBS News segment will focus on the Alabama case of a teen who plaintiffs say was inspired to kill after playing Grand Theft Auto.

This Sunday, March 6, the battle between the families of slain Alabama police officers and the makers and sellers of the Grand Theft Auto franchise will go prime time. The CBS news program 60 Minutes will include a segment focusing on the lawsuit sparked by the deaths of three Fayette County, Alabama, officers who were killed by a teen who said he was inspired by the gangland-style game series.

In the segment, 60 Minutes anchor Ed Bradley traveled to Fayette County, interviewing Police Chief Euel Hall and others about the June 2003 events that led to the arrest of 18-year-old Devin Moore. He was charged in the shooting of three local policemen after he was arrested for stealing a car. When caught, Moore allegedly said, "Life's like a video game. You've got to die sometime."

The lawsuit was filed by Jack Thompson on behalf of relatives of two of the victims. Thompson is a lawyer and politician who has helped lead a veritable crusade to protect society from what he says are the ills of violent games. Defendants in the case include Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games, fingered for their part in publishing the Grand Theft Auto series; Sony Corp., Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., and Sony Computer Entertainment America, for producing the PlayStation 2 Devin Moore played on; and Wal-Mart and GameStop, for selling the hardware and software.

Whether the 60 Minutes report will come out on one side or the other of the violent-games debate remains to be seen. Hall told the Alabama-based Tuscaloosa News that he hopes the publicity will help reform the game industry. Bradley also interviewed Thompson, who told the Tuscaloosa news outlet, "He's a neat guy, and he seems to be in our corner on this issue."

When asked to comment on the upcoming segment, Take-Two reps declined.

Actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson revealed more information on the upcoming Doom film, based on id Software's hit franchise. Johnson, who was on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart promoting the film Be Cool, was prodded by Stewart about another upcoming project.

"The film is Doom," admitted Johnson, "We just wrapped it." After Stewart asked the part-time WWE wrestler if he played a "creature," Johnson responded, "No, I'm the one," to which Stewart elatedly brought his hands to his face and screamed, "You're the dude!"

Confusion as to whether The Rock or actor Karl Urban of the Lord of the Rings trilogy fame would be the film's main star still remains. Urban's character, John Grimm, is the leader of a special-operations group that includes Johnson's character, listed only as "Sarge." The Rock was earlier quoted by Empire Online as saying, "Without giving the movie away, I play the ultimate [censored]. It'll be great. But you don't know I'm [censored]."

Taking much of its inspiration from the PC game Doom 3, the film will take place in a paramilitary research facility on Mars, where things go awry and hell is literally raised. Some theories say that the Rock is actually Satan in disguise, which would tie in to the film and game's devilish setting.

Johnson let on about his excitement for the film. "Here's the great thing about Doom... It's rated 'R,' it's unapologetic, just like the video game. I love blowing [expletive] up, and in this movie..." Johnson also gave details about the legendary BFG, calling it a "bio-force gun," rather than the more profane term gamers pegged the acronym as standing for.

Doom the movie is expected to hit the screen in August and is being directed by Cradle 2 the Grave director Andrzej Bartkowiak. Contrary to earlier reports by id Software, the film is indeed being developed by Universal Pictures and will costar Die Another Day's Rosamund Pike in a less villainous role.

Doom 3 was released on the PC last August, and an Xbox version will hit shelves April 3.
