The ILLEST BBOYS

the battle was a tough one to call eddel. although you guys definitely brought the heat, i can't say that some of the others on the opposing side didn't either. great job regardless and don't worry, bboy event outcomes these days are 90% politics.

to those unfamiliar with the ideals and the nature of bboying concepts, it's a complicated and arguable topic of discussion.
when Flash says "commercial moves" and "lacking originality", that's pretty broad, maybe a little vague, to those not seasoned in the bboying community.

what i believe Flash probably means by this and his analogy of "bboying:VF" is that, there are indeed a lot of dynamic visuals going on in VF: wall combos, bounce combos, epic just-frames, etc., but usually what's more interesting/important to the experienced players are what's happening beneath the surface when players are exchanging thoughts.
the mindfulness, improvisation, and "rawness" of what composes a good VF player is similar to what would compose a good bboy. that's not to say that you're not allowed to do "flashy moves" and be considered a good bboy either.
it's like how there are Supers in SF games, and at high-level play, it's absolutely necessary to use them to your advantage. however, generally speaking, you wouldn't just throw out a Super at random. it's going to be based on chaining from a combo, reacting to an animation, or a thoughful yomi situation. this kind of resembles how certain moves in bboying should be applied.
sometimes there is a right time for something and sometimes there is not. again, this is all arguable because there are so many different minds of thought in the bboying community, and it's a war that will never end.
i do agree with Flash, and i hope what i'm saying validates his point more.

Get it Zen man lol!! Good post.

when im lost at B-Boying and judging shit off screen i look for inconsistancies.

Power Moves are good but its Style, charisma and flow.
With flow i mean how well you link your moves and are your resets that visible? I hate Powerheads (Those who go for the big moves all day) tiring themselves out and don't have the stamina to hold thier poses. Me personaly in B-boying i like to see the little slick abstract moves that are performed "Cleanly" with good direction.

Hey Flash I came across this from the legendary Rocksteady Crew and even though it was choreographied i love the crispiness and cleanliness to the moves. This was the kind of shit that turn me on to it as i got older.
@0:47 that Kid got busy with it.

You also have to remember what your perception of breaking is? Is it foundation, power moves, flow, threading, abstract (like the clown kids from texas?), etc. There are a ton of theories on what is dope

i think what you're describing is more interest than perception. it doesn't matter what aspect you are interested in. like how different characters in different games have unique focuses.
whatever it is, it must have structure. this perception needs to remain consistent across all the aspects.

I understand what's going on a lil better now that I took a lil closer look. I understand just cause you (in general) can do windmills, head spins and back/front flips and the other guy can't (or just can't hold em as long) doesn't mean you will win. I see it's bout having your own style, dancing and doing freezes to the beat and like ironzen said "chaining moves". Hek if you can only do 2 rotations on a windmill but the way you go into it is ill and/or the way you froze after it, that's gotta be better than just doing your normal go into the mill from...The basic way I guess (lol) and doing 10 rotations then just standing up after.

I dunno man, the shit is raw though, be cool if knew a lil more bout this when I was younger, ida been all over it. I just saw headspins and w-mills n that's all I thought there was to it so I never bothered with it cause I thought everyone was just doin the same stuff. I used to dance a lil back in the day, but just some simple pop lockin shit n some basic footwork stuff.

Maybe it's not too late for me to do some bboy stuff with my old short azz, joints crackin n shit lol. Looks mad fun though.

Well, there are a lot of breakers who say you have to be all about foundation, others all about power, etc. Always remember that the word "like" is purely subjective.

exactly mao, those dudes are BREAKERS. we, however, are BBOYS. [IMG] if ya hear me!

  11. ironzen

    ironzen Well-Known Member

that is the misconception. foundation doesn't mean footwork, nor toprock, nor anything. it is the fundamental basis of whatever it is. even if a bboy says you should be all about power, there is a foundation to power as well and a proper way to apply it.

bboy and breakers, will for a lot of people mean the same thing. Hell, talk too 2 different bboys and you will probably get different definitions of what bboying/breaking is!

Yo Flash, you battled any cats from Tennessee??? I know this one guy who claims they've got the best blah blah blah, so I was wonderin' if you ever crushed cats out there... I know they're good, but alot of them that I see don't break, they just tick, tut, and do their "local" style of popping...
