    Re: Central austin gatherings

Well, got the student student group approved, I'm going to go get room space reserved (hopefully) tomorrow. This friday is out, and I'm assuming halloween is as well. I'm going to go for an every-other-week schedule, starting either oct 17 or oct 24. There's some chance that the room I want (ground floor, already has a tv) may be reserved until 10pm; if it is, would y'all prefer 10pm-3am meets, or earlier start times in a crappier space?
If anybody's got an opinion on scheduling or timing, pipe up.

I am voting for the nicer room with the later start time of 10pm. Does it have room to set up extra TVs? If so that would be the popular pick.

Also, I assume that alcohol is not permitted at the Union at all... so only twice a month is a good rotation so that on the off weeks we can at least drink (for those that want to).

I'll let everyone else know on the other forums... as for the start date let me get back to ya, since I think someone is planning a big party on the 18th.

    Re: Central austin gatherings

Okay, the room reservation form is in . . . barring any screw-ups, I've got the "Pearce Hall" (ground floor, just off of the food court - map ) for the following dates:

    October 17th, 10pm
    November 7th, 9pm
    November 21st, 11pm
    December 5th, 10pm

Space was also available on halloween, nov 14th at 10pm, and Dec 12 at 6pm. If either of those dates is appealing as an alternate / extra, I could snag them as well, but the sooner the better. Everything else was taken; the place shuts down for the holidays after dec 12.

It's about 6-700 sq ft, 10 tables w/ chairs, TV in one corner. Occupancy is rated at max 60. Theres enough table space and outlets to add a few TVs if someone is willing to bring them. I didn't request additional TVs so as to minimize the involvement of union staff.

The only way alcohol is allowed is to pay for a TABC certified union employee to hang around and serve it . . . needless to say, this isn't likely.

I'll definitely try to swing by. Maybe bring a guy named Mike if he wants to go. Dom and Eddie P haven't been playing VF so they'd probably only go for SC2 and Tekken, with the occasional game of VF thrown in. Jason Garza, the 2nd most enthusiastic VF player here, has to work on Friday nights so he can't go. That kind of sucks. But I'll really try to make this.

Sounds good to me too. We should also go for the 12-12 at 6pm, it's a good time.

At least one of those dates we should host tourneys, maybe the 12-12 one since it has a good start time?

Btw anyone wanting to play this week (10-9) are welcome to come by on friday... just call me, 750 2910. We usually play sc2/vf4 starting around 5 or 6pm.

Okay, all reservations confirmed now including dec 12th. So the schedule is, pearce hall @ texas union:

    October 17th, 10pm
    November 7th, 9pm
    November 21st, 11pm
    December 5th, 10pm
    December 12th, 6pm

Maybe informal tourneys on nov 7 and dec 12?

    Re: Central austin gatherings

So what's all going to be there? SC2 and VF only? How many tv's, systems, games will be there? And what date will the tourneys be on? I don't know how many of these I can go to seeing as how I'm 3 hours away, but I'd rather make the tournies if anything. And will SC2 or any other games have tournies? You'd get a lot more people if you had reg. SC2 and Evo tournies. I'm sure the guys here would drive up for SC2, esp. a tourney.

Sorry for all the questions, but I don't want to drive 3 hours and not know whats going to be there. And I need to know incase I get more people to come up from Dallas, I need to tell them what games you guys will have, and what games with tournies and when.

    Thanks.

BTW, how many people do ya'll figure will be there for VF? Just an estimate is fine, like from the Austin area.

    Re: Central austin gatherings

As for what's going to be there, my primary interest is VF, but the group is set up for any game that has significant tactical value. So SCII = ok, vice city = not so ok. I can bring a mame'd xbox if theres a lot of call for old school 2d fighters or shmups. Hell, i'll probably even keep a Go board around if anyone wants to play / learn.

As for setups, I can only guarantee 1 t.v. with system of choice right now; Cosmic, can you guarantee another one, or should I reserve an extra union TV? Only problem with that is them having to come get it back somewhere between 2-3 in the morning.

As for tourney dates, best thing to do would probably be to see what turnout is like on friday, if we can get a critical mass for a short tourney on nov 7. I think dec 12 should definitely be down for a tourney, tho.

As for tourney games, to put it bluntly, I really don't like SCII. However, I have no problem running a SCII tourney as long as Evo has a tourney as well.

As for # of vf-specific players, given the game's popularity, I'd be shocked and amazed if 10 showed.

    Hope that helps . . .

    Re: Central austin gatherings

Awesome man, thanks. I also could care less for SC2, but Dallas has quite a few guys who probably would make the trip, esp. if they can have a SC2 tourney. VF is all I really care about, but the more SC2 players that go, the better chance of them seeing VF and maybe getting into it (and better chance I have to bum a ride).

10 aint that bad for VF. If I go, I'll probably be bringing at least 1 other. If Dom and Eddie P go, they'll probably play VF too. So that's 4 already. Plus there's a couple more that play here that might go for VF, if they find out about this gathering.

I'll post up if I'll make it next week, and if I'm going with anyone. I'm dying to play new VF players.

    Re: Central austin gatherings

TexasLion... formerly Modestmouse right? It's cool that those guys are still into VF. I recently picked up SC2 on a whim... I can say it's definately a step up quality-wise from Tekken. I can make more similarities between VF/SC2 than previous namco games.

Anyways, these are the people I know for sure play in Austin, though I may be out of touch with a few:

    Myself (Shun, Kage, Goh)
    KoD (Aoi, Goh)
    Lee (Aoi, Sarah, Jeffry)
    Russ (Jacky, Pai)
    Alex (Sarah)
    John (Pai)
    Robo (Vanessa)

The last three I do not stay in steady contact with, but I can tell them about this week and hope they show up. I will let a few friends in SA know about the gathering too and see if they are interested.

Yeah count me in for at least the PS2. I dunno how far I'd have to carry my TV though for this, so we'll see /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If anyone wants too get in some pre-games beforehand at my place thats cool. Just let me know.

    Re: Central austin gatherings

As far as distance goes, here's a crappy map of the nearby buildings - the room is pretty much right where the "UNB" text is. So dropping stuff off in the little parking lot area between "FAC" and "HMA" is pretty close to the union. Naturally i'm willing to help.
That having been said, I'll talk to the union folks about reserving another tv, try to see if that's more or less of a hassle than carrying your smaller tv 25 yards or so.

Yeah, if I can make it that would be cool. I'll just drive to your place, then we can play a bit and I can follow you to the gathering since I don't know my way around Austin. What time would be good to arrive at your place?

    Re: Central austin gatherings

If they can get another TV without a fuss then let's do that. Otherwise we should see about maybe getting a small dolly or something to move the TVs easier.

Lion-- This first gathering is at 10pm this week, but we always get together usually by 5pm at my place in round rock (which is on the way to UT in Austin). So if you want, whenever you come down you can just park here and we can carpool down there. Also I usually let the out-of-towners crash at my place so they can drive back fresh on Sat. You planning on coming down this week or waiting for the Nov tourney?

    Re: Central austin gatherings

I wanted to go this week and check it out, but I'm afraid I wouldn't arrive in Austin until around 10 pm. See I forgot that I can't leave here until after 6 pm because my family needs the car before then. So if I do go, it looks like meeting at your place is not very likely. I might as well just go directly to the gathering since there's no reason for ya'll to wait for me to arrive. If I can get a friend to use his car though, I can go earlier and I can meet up at your place. I'll let you know.

    Re: Central austin gatherings

Well, reserving another tv (somewhere in the 25"-30" range, they've got a few) was straightforward. Dunno how much of an annoyance them taking it back at the end of the evening will cause, guess we'll just have to see. So cosmic, if you could just be responsible for bringing a ps2, that'd be great.

For some reason, they applied the extras TV change to the first four dates, but not dec 12. Maybe that would be a good day to rent an LCD projector for tourney purposes. You think folks would be willing to kick in towards the $35 total for the rental?

Count me in for the PS2. Mine is also modified to play imports and backups too, to expand our range of games.

As for the rental, we'll have to play by ear. Let's see how many folks show interest in our regular gatherings... btw good job getting this together! I just hope people take advantage of it.

I'm in college in San Angelo right now, but I reside in San Antonio. Once I graduate in December and have a steady or even somewhat steady income, I'd love to come up to Austin for some matches.

There just ain't enough Aoi love.

Actually that's pretty funny cuz 2 of the 5 or 6 serious EVO players here in Austin play Aoi as their main character. So with you that would be 3 :p Seems she's pretty popular in Texas.

Anyways the UT gathering went well tonight I think. I counted 12 people overall that showed up. Everyone is encouraged to attend our next one. In the meantime tho I do have gatherings at my place on fridays.

Also, don't forget about the Sat gathering on the 25th in RR... lots of games including vf4, 3 or 4 TVs, a bigscreen, other arcade games, etc. For more info check out Katsu's posts at soulcalibur.com.
