    Gathering in August?

I might be able to host a VF gathering here in late August. Folks might be going to CA for a week so the whole house will be mine. I got a huge 47" tv which looks really good as long as I hook up the S-Video or Component on (composite looks like ass, though), and I got a 50 ft. pool, 12 feet deep to cool off during this TX heat. Would anyone be interested in going?

Also, sorry I couldn't make it Cosmic but I didn't have a ride. Next time, though, I'll probably just take my dads car and drive myself (and face the music when I get back). Oh, but is it possible to have it on a Sat. next time? If it's a Sat. I can stay out all night, but on some Fridays I need the car back by Sat. morning since my mom needs it for work (she works Sat. sometimes).

    Re: Gathering in August?

For now fridays are my only option, since I work on saturday. This may change in the future, but for now its my only good time.

Your place does sound pimpish though... I may consider hitting your place up if you have a gathering sometime. Right now my place is in flux so hosting here anything more than a gathering isn't feasible.

We're still down for friday gatherings for evo though, just call me ahead of time.

I might be heading back to Texas within a couple of months. Are you still hosting gatherings on fridays Cosmic?

Not right now, but if people start showing interest in the game again I will.. there just isn't enough consistent comp these days. My new pad will be pretty player-friendly so it will be good for gaming sessions. I'll be moving into the new place a week from today.

Check back with me again soon to make sure...

    Re: Gathering 7-11

I'd go this Friday but the car needs new breaks. Once I get that fixed, i should be able to go to your gatherings. If Dom is going, though, and he can give me a ride, I'll go.

Oh, what's your work schedule Sat Cosmic? I'll probably be in Austin Sat. July 26 for a concert, and afterwards, if you're free and off work, then maybe I can get in a few games with you before heading back to Dallas. It'll probably be late Sat. so I'd understand if you're not up for it.

Oh, and I got together with the Dom and his crew. We had some good games last week. Hopefully we can get some regular game sessions going for now on. Once junosynth comes back and we train another guy named Quincy (he used to play VF but stopped at VF4, but he has what it takes to get good again), then we'll just add to the Dallas scene, and the TX scene in general. Dallas will be around 5 to 7 strong in the next month or two.

After that, we really need to get some regular gaming sessions going with your Austin crew. Maybe go over there one week, and you guys come over here a week. I'm telling you, if you guys are serious, then TX can be one of the major states to host some of the strongest VF players.

Well sat's are still hard for me since i'm only off on thu/fri and this is gonna stick awhile.

The austin crew has kinda gotten out of shape in VF4, but I'm hoping to revive it now. I'm still in debate on wether I should go to eVo2k3, but we'll see.

I'm in my new place now and it's set up quite nicely for gaming. If anyone wants to chat with me online i use CozmicForge on AIM and ninjak1976 on yahoo. Cell is 512-750-2910. We will have a mini gathering tomorrow kind of like a housewarming deal.

    Central austin gatherings

I've got two points, First just a bump to see if u.s. evo being released has generated any TX interest.

Second, would anyone be interested in gathering(s) at the UT austin student union, right on the main drag? Bear with me here - if a few buddies and I fill out some paperwork to create a student org, reserving rooms of any size from a cubby on up to a ballroom is free, so no probs with space or seating; monitor / tv setups are free; LCD projector setups are like $35 / day if i wanted to be extravagant. Only institutional downsides being cleaned up & out by 3 am, no blatant drunkeness. Of course i'm willing to do the work if it seems like something people would be up for.

    Re: Central austin gatherings

I'll go, but I don't know how popular it would be with everyone else. No one in TX is really a huge fan. I'm one of the few (maybe the only one). Everyone else is just a casual fan that could play or stop at any time and it probably wouldn't matter to them much. So you might want to check with everyone before renting out any place. It won't be worth it if just a few guys show up.

I don't know about Austin, but Dallas is still pretty bad when it comes to holding reg. gatherings. Few show up, and those that do aren't serious about the game. They just play just to play.

    Re: Central austin gatherings

I'm going to start hosting official gatherings again at my place on Friday nights. However, I think the format is going to change slightly from VF only to "by popular demand". VF still has a few harcdore players here that are getting pretty good, but there are still the SC2 fans as well as the 2D gamers.

As for the rental down at UT, I'm down with that for sure! Friday evenings are the best for me, and most of the VF players are the same I think. I live in Round Rock now so that may be a bit of a drive for some folks though.

Lets decide on this soon. If we can't get the union deal this week I'm glad to host here at my place. It's pretty gamer friendly so let me know. Same rules here though: no crazy loudness or noise levels in or near the apt... most people in the community are out by midnight anyways /versus/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

If anyone wants to email me I'm graley@austin.rr.com, and my # is 512-750-2910. Also, I go by CozmicForge on AIM, ninjak1976 on Yahoo, and cosmic_forge on MSN. Peace.

    Re: Central austin gatherings

Fridays are fine for me, but round rock is unfortunately a no-go for the near future.

I'll go ahead & start working on reserving union space, see how that goes. Either way, having a setup running SCII to attract & hopefully convert people sounds like a good idea.

Can you try for this friday, the 12th? That would be pretty cool... I know I could muster a decent following. If we get a lot of people we could even start posting up flyers about it and attract more people (i'm sure there are a lot out there that haven't heard of vfdc).

What all would we need in the way of furniture/equipment to furnish the room?

    Re: Central austin gatherings

The chances of my getting a texas union room reservation by Friday the 12th are slim to nil, since the required orientation meeting before student orgs can submit registration paperwork is tuesday (the 9th), and the union requires 2 full days advance notice of reservations.

Best I'm likely to be able to do by friday is my law school student lounge, which has plenty of couch space and a widescreen t.v. I'd be willing to set up there, with official approval or not, especially since most people are out of the building by 5:00. Only problem with that is custodial services close up the law school earlier than the 3 a.m. the union is open until; i'd guess midnight.

In any event, the only equipment we'd need to provide would be game specific. Obviously copies of the game, ps2s and controllers are non-issues, since I could come up with a couple of setups just on my own. Furniture / av stuff is either already there, or available from the university. If you did want to do something ninja-style in the lounge on friday, bringing a 20" tv or whatever would probably be necessary to get a second setup. For the future, I can request several monitors as needed (within reason).

As for attracting people, judging from the people I know, flyering is likely to attract either casual videogame players or SCII players. The guys I'm getting to sign off on the org with me are the type who've occasionally played VF, but havent played any game seriously since SFII, if at all. Whether you & the folks you could muster want to deal with that is another issue.

Depending on how things go, its possible to reserve union space on a recurring basis, monthly, biweekly, or even weekly. All we'd need is at least a few people to show up each time in order to keep the room occupied.

At any rate, this post is turning into a textbook. I'll know more by tomorrow, and try to find you on AIM.

    Re: Central austin gatherings

Well whatever you need help with I'm there man. Once word gets out I'm sure we'll have no problem getting frequent hardcore gamers.

What we could do is have it setup bi-weekly/twice a month. One of the two meets can be practice and the other can bet set up for tourneys, so we can have 1 tourney per month. I'm going to post up about this on EC.com (a tekken site) and SC.com (for SC2 players) to pick up support.

I'm thinking about talking to Russell about designing an Austin Gamer's website for us to really kick things off. Once we get a rep for having good comp and regular players I'm sure we'll attract players from SA, houston, and dallas etc.

You got my # and messenger handles so let me know. BTW if you cant set up for this Friday but still wanna get in some games with us lemme know since I know a few UT students that play that might pick ya up. L8rz

    Re: Central austin gatherings

Well, this friday's definitely a no-go for either the union or the lounge. May take 2 weeks for the paperwork to go through before I can start getting union reservations. The law school is now closing super-early (7pm) due to budget cuts. We could stick around after closing time, but it'd be kinda sketchy in terms of people getting in. However, I'm definitely down for scheduling twice-a-month union reservations as soon as I can, & will scope out rooms.

Get in contact with Dom (on here), he goes by LilTwinTexas on AIM.

Kody-- glad you could make it this time man. Hopefully when we get the UT thing going we can get more people involved. My apt is kinda small so I prolly can't handle more than what showed up this time. Russell and I are gonna start working on the austin-fighter's website soon. We can put the URL on the flyers once everything gets running.

Next friday... gathering at my apt as usual. Bring the comp!

Kody, what's the status on the Union setup? Right now most of the gatherings are looking to take place either here (my apt), duval/mopac, or another place in RR. So all north. Lemme know...

Also as usual this friday is open for a gathering here. TTYL

As far as I can tell, the group's paperwork still hasn't been approved. I'm going by the student org office today, so i can check again then. I scoped out the places in the union - there's a TV room off of the main eating area on the ground floor that can be reserved, seems like that would be ideal.
