Graphics look nice. Screenshots show some old faces in somewhat new outfits. I'm disapointed seeing Bryan Fury is still in his old body. Oh well, now I'm gonna browse the net in search of the Trailer. I'll post it up if I find it.

There is a barely watchable trailer here:

There will probably (definitely) be a good copy of the trailer recored today.

In America and most of the world, it is spelled Ju Jistue buddy. Your spelling it phonetically

    [/ QUOTE ]

It's 'you're', not 'your'. You're spelling it phonetically, buddy.

Japanese is a phonetic language - probably has one of the fewest 'spelling' rules for any language. The only pronunciation changes I can think of are in extended vowels - 'ou' and 'ie' (aside from occasionally demphasizing the 'u' part of some syllables in midword). It doesn't have the screwed up phonetics rules of English. If you see 'Jo', it's always pronounced like 'Joe'. If you see 'Ya', it's always pronounced like a Rastafarian saying "ya, mon.' Kanji are a different kettle of fish, but hiragana are 100% phonetic.

The differing romanization comes from two different early schools of Japanese translation. Your bastardized West Virginian Hillfolk spelling is about as valid as 'EZ RENT 2 U'. It's not 'Jew Jis-tew'. It's "jew jewt-su' phonetically - jujutsu. Two kanji which translate to three hiragana syllables - ju, and ju, tsu. The common 'jiu' spelling comes because the 'ju' hiragana is actually written as a 'ji' hiragana with a little 'yu' hiragana subscripted on it, and one romanization method expresses this as 'jiu' instead of 'ju'. Irregardless, it's a single japanese syllable not two. Jiujiutsu would be one romanization, jujutsu is the more common romanization, because the first spelling could be construed as five syllables "ji-u-ji-u-tsu". Occassionally you'll stumble across 'Jyujyutsu' or 'Jyujyutu' as well - I find these type of spellings most often when japanese are romanizing their own words for Romanic alphabet based internet and chat.

'Juu' is two syllables in every romanization method, and therefore incorrect. 'Jitsu' has resulted because of miscopying of 'jiutsu', and the tendancy of many Japanese when speaking Japanese to deemphasize many 'u's in the middle of words, so an untrained ear may hear "jujitsu' when the Japanese person is pronouncing it more like 'ju-j-tsu'. You'll find this happens a lot with '_u' syllables in the middle of words.

And as far as Jistue, I've never heard anyone pronounce it 'Jist-ew' who really knew what they were talking about. It's pronounced 'Jewt-sue', but I have never in 10 years of martial arts seen anyone with any level of acquaintance with the technique put an 'E" on the end of it, nor substitute an 'st' instead of a 'ts'. 'Juu' and 'jitsu', yes. Never 'Jistue'.

If I ever saw a school that advertised 'Hackin Rue Ju Jistue', (Hakken Ryu Jujutsu) I'd probably wonder just how the hell they got accredited to teach, and at what point in training they'd teach the 'deer hunting rifle' and 'Marry yer cousin' techniques. If you went to take karate and the sign above the door said , 'Karatee' or 'Cawrawtee', you'd probably bust up laughing as well. Just like you laugh at foreigners when they mess up an English word, they'd probably explode a few gonads laughing at the 'Hackin Rue Jujistue Dohjoe'.

Edit: And upon looking in my kanji dictionary, I find myself to be in error. The first kanji is a two syllable kanji - 'juu' is correct, and I am in error. God, my Japanese is all going to mush in my head. 8(

    So don't play T5.

    I will though.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I didn't say I wouldn't play it, but given Namco's performance on Tekken 4, I'll keep my expectations low. I liked T3, loved Tag (mainly because you could learn a new character and play one you knew at the same time), hated T4, and just feel that Namco put more energy into making SC2 flashy than on the actual gameplay and character balance. Given that in my opinion the emphasis in the last two major games they've put out has been on graphics rather than gameplay, I'm sure you can understand why I'm worried that they say they're going to have 800 characters. I'm not saying that it will be bad, or suck totally - I'm just saying I have a bad feeling now that it's going to be more glitz and flash and not much improvement on either the jerky unresponsive engine underlying T4 or character balancing issues. When characters are really unbalanced, the game gets annoying. Ask any Ibuki player or Kuma player, or someone who has a friend who plays a T3 Paul, Julia, or Jin all the time.

Maybe they'll bring back T3-esque juggles, though. /versus/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I really miss good juggling - it's one thing neither T4 nor VF have.

The trailer (video cam footage) can already be found at Maxi Milian's Tekken Tag FTP, 19 megs or something like that.

    I really recommend.

Even tho that little debate of yours is totally off topic, I too want to say that it's JIU jitsu (not that it wouldn't already be clear to everyone after the previous post /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif )

When people spell the word, it may sound like JU, but that's not the way it's written.

    Daizan ryu webpage

See the bottom right two kanji at the top of the first page? They're the same as the bottom two kanji on the rightmost row in the middle of the second page.

The first *is* 'ju-u' , not 'ju' - I was mistaken earlier. It *is* a two syllable kanji, not a single syllable, and my apologies for the misinformation. The first kanji is also in 'judo', which caused my misconception - I assumed that English translators couldn't fark that up, and took 'ju' as gospel, and I should have KNOWN better than to trust common American spellings. *bonks self* The 'juu' pronounciation of that kanji isn't one I encountered outside of Judo and Jujutsu when I was studying Japanese, so I never had a need to confirm it. Let that be a lesson to everyone - trust no one and verify everything yourself.

The second one is indeed 'jutsu'. I didn't fark that one up.

The correct phonetic spelling would be 'juujutsu' for one school of Romanization and 'jiuujiutsu' for another. It's easy to see why some of the vowels got removed, eh?

Americans and other Romanic alphabet languages have bastardized it horribly over the years. As long as no one writes 'ju jistue', I think this horse is horribly dead and we can stop beating it. Besides, while my foot is quite tasty, I need to go and pick up dinner, so I'll have to take it out of my mouth to drive. /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gifBut can I get partial credit on 'Juu' so I pass the class? /versus/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Missing letter 'u' in Japanese words, missing votes in Florida, missing weapons of mass destruction- it's an epidemic that's only getting worse.

Agreed Im sure everyone's "slightly" more interested in the main topic.

There's a reasonable if blurry vidoe of the trailer at gamespot.

The game looks very stylish, Asuma has a near identical outfit to Aoi's and and she seems to have quite alot of new moves that Jun never had. Wang Fei's style looks bone crunchingly brutal (just what you would expect from a man with a face like that) and Raven is also quite flashy.

Looking forward to see how this actually turns out gameplay wise.

The Kung Fu dude's fighting style looks sick, Raven's style seems to be Ninja-ish.

I wonder why they haven't announced on what system(s) the game will be released. Probably considering all three like SC2 but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a PS2 exclusive.

Hey man no one posted in the classic gaming thread after I hooked it up with all the best Emulation links. I thought 2D or video game fans in general would at least be thankful and find it interesting.

    Nice video.

Raven = Kage. Asuka = Aoi. Feng = The parts of Aki that Paul already hasn't + some chains (or the heihachi subsitute).

Other then that gameplay seems remarkably unchanged imo o_O. Graphics are awesome; someone needs to tell me how they will get this to ps2 (homeconsoles 2005 they say) without being heavily toned down.

The home versions have always been solid and sometimes even better than the arcade versions. Remember they said the same thing when T3 was going to be released for the Playstation and it turned out great. Only time will tell but I can't see the Tekken Team making a bad home version. Games like GT4 prove that when in the right hands the PS2 is capable of some of the best graphics around so we'll see.

How about slowdowns for Tekkentag PAL m8?
GT4 doesn't count as they've said they've found som bug to exploit for graphics /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif Seriously though; nice graphics like hell and really hope it pops up for arcades this summer.
