The intros/winposes probably wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't all fanservice used to appeal to an Otaku crowd. From what I've gotten from them, all of the males are clowns/standard Bishounen/manwhores, and all the chicks are ditzy sluts. Totally fleshed out.

They def have to have the item winposes, some of that shit is just plain freakin' awesome!

    AND those pre-fight intro's.
I know they might seem like a small thing, hell people may have just overlooked them most of the time, but I find it crazily amusing to be able to make Jacky dance like a tool (or MJ) get Lion to bust out some hip hop moves, or Brad to do his disco moves :p

Yeah it's true what you say... If Sega would put abit more time into this game, the console version that is, it could go unbelievably far.

*sigh* the day the gaming world relies on button mashing games to keep them amused will be the day everyone is officially retarded.

Err... yeah. Gaming has hit the mainstream. And what the mainstream expect from games is fun - first, foremost, and sometimes solely. Effort and giving it all are strictly optional.

    Why bash it?

I was just reading the RE5 thread over at neogaf,

RE5 sold nearly 5 million copies and it's the best selling RE game so far. But reading the forum comments, it seem that a lot of people were disappointed with RE5. Mainly RE4 fans?

I personally bought and love RE5, and I am happy it sold as much as it did.

Thinking about VF, I wish it could sell 5 millions copies. What kind of stuff would it need to sell so much? would it even be possible? or maybe that kind of number are exclusive to games like Smash Bros, and VF will never ever get close?

I think story mode is a part of the equation, but there need to be something else, mostly a solid ad campaign and some footage of great fights, maybe some turnament with big money prizes and some kind of special event....VF karaoke cosplay party?

Bare flash, bare personality, a minigame, more customisations than T6BR, and a clever marketing campaign (it doesn't have to be huge).

I apologize in advance because I am definitely going to sound like a teenage fanboy, but humor me. These are my ideas for great console-appeal (aside from Story mode, which is a given...):

    A mini marketplace:
A very good example is Little Big Planet (idea-wise). Have a "creator" feature or DLC, and allow people to buy/sell user-created custom items and arenas online. Currency can either be purchased (using real money) or earned by winning in the game. Online tournaments, earning a new quest rank, winning with perfect rounds, completeing SF4-style challenges = large sums of money. Items can also be traded for other items.

The trick here is that the game has to use a custom system better than Tekken's: wherein each part is fully adjustable. Think of it as a character template language - this way, there are no true set items in each disc - the game simply tells the online opponent that the code for player 1's visuals are XYZ123 (this is 100% possible - I know, I'm a developer).

    Sharing Content:
This would be supported by the ability to save and upload matches to the network, and an ability to "post" your matches to a chosen YouTube account. Uploaded matches can also be rated/ranked by viewers - highest ranked/rated videos go on Sega's official YouTube page.

    Custom Music:
    Play your own mp3's.

    KOF-style clan battles:
Everyone knows what I mean by this. User-selected teams (2-on-2, 3-on-3, or 5-on-5), and one player plays as a specific character, or a set of characters (allowing 3 players to play a 5-on-5 game for example).

And one I have been waiting for someone to do...
User-created custom challenges: Aside from the main ones included, the idea I had was for a type of "betting" game setup. E.g. Matteo creates a challenge offline: his goal is to beat a 10th dan Akira using only kicks, in the fastest time possible. Let's say Matt manages to do it in 12 seconds flat.

Now, he uploads the challenge, and puts up a 10,000 of his game credits as a "buy in" bet. Now, anyone can take on this challenge (they can do it offline, to avoid lag issues), but before they can do, they need to match Matt's buy in of 10,000 with their credits. If they beat Matt's time, they win back their money, AND the money Matt put up.

Now if they lose: Matt wins their buy-in, and his own money back. Matt can then choose to keep the challenge "open" or take it down. Challenges can be labeled as "hard", "intermediate", "beginner", etc.

    ---

Basically the whole idea is to create a community: people who create items can buy, sell, trade. People who enjoy watching competitive play can watch/upload/comment/rate on videos. People who want to put up clans/teams to play other clans/teams, and people who enjoy making bets ("I bet you can't do this") and gambles could partake in the custom challenge mode, and then...

    *sigh*

    ...then one can dream...

they sure could take a leaf out of Bungie's book and have a proper replay system in place. Well done Panda, you reminded me of this.

Vf could use a story mode. And there's already enough info for a good story it just needs more detailed. But for it to work Kage-Maru should be the main character and poster boy of Vf. Akira's story is to plain to the center of the story he just trains to be a stronger fighter. Kage's story is much better his
"He was born in the village of Hagakure. "Kage-Maru" is the name given to members of the Hagakure clan who work in secret in the shadows of society. His birthright was to become the tenth-generation Kage-Maru. His father, the ninth-generation Kage-Maru, taught him the fearsome Hagakure fighting technique.

One day, his mother, the eighth-generation Tsukikage, was kidnapped by J6 (judgement6). She was brainwashed and constantly having cybernetic improvements applied, she became a cyborg, immune to feeling. Several years later, the village of Hagakure was attacked by her, now known as Dural. Kage-Maru and his father were out fishing, but quickly returned when they saw the blazing village. They were too late, however, and the village was destroyed. Kage-Maru's father fell by a bullet from the mystery group and the next morning, Kage-Maru salvaged a keepsake from his father, donned his costume, and embarked on a journey to prepare himself to take vengeance on those who spilled his father's blood."

I don't know about Kage being the main character.

Jeff's story is more closely related to the core plot of the VF series.

But god forbid should a Japanese company have a black leading character.

Works well enough for Street Fighter.

I wasn't aware VF had a main character but if it is Akira I don't see how his simplistic story harms anything.

Akira has always been the "main character" for the VF series... He has been the poster boy for many of the adds for VF2, and even VF5...

I reckon there will never be a black leading character in a Final Final Fantasy game.

    Black mage doesn't count.

Kage is the main character according to the story, but i don't think Ninjas without massive tits are held in high regard in Japan. LoL

Jacky should be on the box instead of Akira in non-asian territory for sure. He's an easier character to play at a superficial level as well. Sega are idiots.

Let me see if I can steer the discussion into a slightly different direction. . .

Many of you may think that Sega doesn't care about glitz, flash, character, story and other "superficial" things behind the game. But trust me they do as much any other game company. They know characters sell. (Walt Disney and whoever made Betty Boop discovered that before your grandpa was born.) And they want to make money like anyone else.

The difference is that they SUCK SO MUCH. They have been epic fails long before the word epic fail even existed. In fact they suck so much they have been distorting space-time continuum with their Newtonian physics defying suckiness.

Remember Sarah's "street walker/trailer park trash" costume from VF3? That's what Sega thought of "sexiness" or "appeal to the Western audiences." Also remember Kage's aluminum pants costume that even Michael Jackson wouldn't have touched? Also what's up with Sega adding random odd Bruce Lee homage to Jacky's moveset to make him. . .make him, so UNLIKE Bruce Lee but some ten year old white kid who just watched a Bruce Lee movie.

Tekken and SF designers always had character designs that appealed to both Japanese and American audiences in one flavor or another. (Or Koreans, Mexicans, whatever.) KOF have carved out their own niche character design. (Anime aesthetic but not completely without Western edginess.) And while as shallow as their actual storylines maybe, the important part is that CHARACTERS AND STORIES ENHANCE EACH OTHER TO CREATE SYNERGY, and even inspire otakus to generate fan materials, instead of making them even more laughable like VF stories do.

Iori and Kazuya already look evil and crazy in edge and cool way. But knowing the story behind them actually enhance their character and make you feel more badass when/if you kick ass with them. Knowing the "story" behind VF characters actually make them more laughable and harder to take them seriously.

I believe some VFers say they don't want to see more story or story mode because subconsciously they know it's going to suck. You don't see any Tekken players who say they don't want more stories for Tekken do you? That's because the Tekken story, while not a Hugo award material, at least serves to enhance the characters' badass-itude or comic-appeal or whatever, instead of being plain laughable like VF.

In my opinion, the VF storyline and character designs are so bad that it's unsalvagable. That's why I would rather prefer killing the series and reuse the engine in a completely new series.

I agree with everything Hyunster just posted. Sega are idiots.

I say Kage is the main character because he has the closest relation to the last boss. Dural is, or was, made from his mother. Or something like that, and he's in the tournie to say her life. I think he's also done the best based on tournament results.

Not that it really matters though. The story was written in a few minutes on the back of a ciggy box by someone sitting on the AM2 toilets.
