Okay, I'm going to try and catch up piece by piece here...
To all the people here whom have been basically thinking 'Wtf?' about the fact that adding a 'Story Mode' would be harmful, I was just thinking that, because, particularly in Western Cultures, the fans of VF are pretty few, so I'd reckon those few fans would want it to stay the same as it always has been.
Don't get all heated people, I'm just wanting to get opinions :p
Like, I'd just think, after 5 previous games without expanding much on the story, and in the next one, a Story Mode is randomly chucked into the mix, people would be more like 'Huh?' rather than pleased by it... you know what I mean?

But on the other hand, it would be a very interesting addition... I mean, basically everyone has a rival... if you think about it... Like a mode, almost like SF4's Story Mode, where you have an opening scene, describing why they are in the tourny, fight and go through random opponents, meet your rival, or someone significant for the second last match (i.e. Sarah vs. Jacky, Lion vs Jean, Wolf vs El Blaze, or Akira and so on)

The "Huh?" would mostly be from the hardcore crowd, considering that if it isn't well executed, there are a lot of story modes from other fighting games to get inspiration from.

I'll say it again: People love a good story.

No casual gamer plays Final Fantasy for the "depth of role playing strategies and mechanics". They just want to know if there is a traitor, who ends up with who, and who gets killed.

Likewise, casual players aren't going to play VF for the fantastic depth and rewarding game mechanics. That's the space where the hardcore people reside.

Casuals just want to know who kills who, and if Brad and Aoi get it on in a spitefull sex kind of way. Or if there is a secret animal character. I'm thinking a gorilla inspired from "Planet of the Apes" would be fun. Talk about throw range.

And yes, they will pay $$$ for that.

Thumbs up about the Gorilla comment :p
But that is true about the more Casual Gamers thing.
Maybe Sega just wants to keep the game with the Hardcore gamers?
    But that'd be stupid moneywise...
Then again, since When have Sega had a decent marketing team? :p

The only reason DOA4's storyline adds to the game is because it has nothing else to offer, aside from TnA. And unfortunately, that sells better than balanced gameplay. While almost every gamer is willing to admit that VF5 is a wonderful game, it's sales are crap, and that's why we're probably not getting R. I'm a sad panda about that.

VF5 actually has a very good storyline. It's just explained in the manuals and online. I agree that Sega wasting time creating a story mode would take away from the gameplay (probably), because Sega only has so much time and money to dedicate to this amazing series (because of poor sales. VF really only makes money in Japanese arcades).

However... because of poor sales, really, what would we have to lose but letting gameplay slide a little and getting a story mode in exchange? Almost all of the best selling fighting games have been unbalanced. Hell, VF would only get more fans. Which is a good thing, right?

It would be nice to see the characters fleshed out a little bit more, and to see them have special quotes for each other; ie Sarah and Jacky, Sarah and Vanessa, Aoi and Akira, Goh and Kage, Lau and Pai, Lion and Jean, etc... There are certain plot holes that have been created, and should be addressed; such as the matter of Aoi and Akira being childhood friends, when he's like, ten years older than her, Lau's mysterious and terminal illness, Goh trying to kill everyone (and not succeeding once, unless he's somehow responsible for Lau's illness).

I think, all things considered, the pros of having a story mode far outweigh the one speculated con. Who knows? Perhaps Sega could make a story mode and still keeping the gameplay just the way it is. In fact, I don't see how adding a story mode would unbalance the game. Just add it in as a patch or something.

    ...Ew.

Aoi should just go back to her original love-interest; Akira. Besides, VF5 manual says that Aoi just wants to beat the shit out of him for being a sexist, womanizing pig. Never said she wanted to get in his pants.

    Childhood friends ftw.

Pleeeeeeaaaaase Don't say we won't be getting R, you'll crush all my VF Fanboy Hopes, dreams and Aspirations :p
I think it'd make alot of VF gamer's very Sad Panda's, and probably, we'd have a riot of Panda's on our hands... Sega would have a riot of Pandas rather.

Hmm, yeah I do agree the game does have a semi-decent storyline, but the fact tht you have to look for the storyline through the manual and internet, rather than through the gameplay may frustrate some of the more casual players, and may make them turn away from the game, which, could probably link in relation to the poor sales aspect.

Well, if Sega care about making money and getting a larger fanbase for one of if, not the, best fighter title around, then they should take a story mode into consideration perhaps.

I have to agree with the rival-quotes thing too, and, tbh, I have been wanting to see somehing like that from VF4. Like, I was disappointed when nothing was in VF4, So I looked to VF4:EVO when it came out and about, but was disappointed again, and then in VF5, once again.
It didn't piss me off to the point i'd break the gme disk though, but it was a teensy bit of a let down.

Like I could just Imagine some of thm now.
    Lion vs Jean:
*Lion is training alone in his Palace stage, and Jean comes up behind him*
Jean: (Obviously, his dialogue will be in Jap)
    You... you look familiar.
Lion: Jean! Jean Kujo, remember me?
*Lion advances toward him to give Jean a friendly handshake/hug or such, But Jean, still not completely sure of Lion, due to being brinwashed, backs off and starts to get wary*
Jean: Who.. Who are you? I have seen your face before... Where have I seen you?
Lion: *still advancing* Don't you remember me? Lion Rafale? I was your Childhood friend! We grew up in France Togeth-
Jean: *Now backing away from Lion* Get Away!
    *Start Fight*
... I did drama from years 7-12, in high school, sooo, I enjoy scrip writing :p
That was crap compared to what I CAN do when I CanBF

But yeah, it should be something like that, to flesh out the story abit.

I could write something for every pair if I had the time :p

Anyway, yes, getting back to the point, I think, either way, whether sega add a story mode in future VF's or not, it would hve both a positive and negative impact on whatever they decide to do.
    Such a confumbling issue.

Erm... don't take offence, but that stuff is so old and tired, I rather not see a tacked on "dont know you dude who are you? my brother? fuck that you homo" stuff. If they have to make a story mode for the masses they should at least get it right.

    Eileen: Paaaaaaaaai-samaaaaaa~!
    Pai: o.o; Fangirls... RUUUUUUUUUUN!
-Eileen chases Pai through a myriad of backgrounds, to the Benny Hill theme.-

    Also.

    Aoi: Hey Akira.
Akira: Get back in the kitchen.
Aoi: -sadsad.- Want me to make you a sandwich while I'm there, jerk?
[Which is basically what Hitomi and Hayate's story became in DOA. Which is why DOA's storyline sucks. Because they ruined it.]

There would need to be a scene where someone walks in on Sarah and Vanessa.

Probably Brad (peeping tom) or Jacky.

I could see it now. Jacky walks in in Sarah and Vanessa. Vanessa rages the fuck out and snaps Jacky's neck.
That would be the best way to kill off Jacky.

    ...please get rid of Jacky.
