i've seen this same thread on so many FG boards. Online player, never hit an arcade, wants respect from the arcade community for his skills. Refuses to demonstrate skills in arcade. Trolling ensues.

Even with no lag, online couldn't be compared to arcade. Everyone that's about to play you in an arcade or tournament is watching you play. They're ready for your mixup. They know what character you're good with. They're observing your patterns and know them before the game starts. They can see if you're nervous or if you like to mash. They can hear you press buttons.

Everyone focuses on lag when they think about online vs arcade. That doesn't even scratch the surface. There's just no comparison. Having a high online rank means you're good at Online Virtua Fighter.

Wow, just noticed this out of control tangent of a thread and honestly couldn't even read through most of anything past page 5. I will clear things up for everyone that misread, didn't understand, and felt violated by Myke's original post:

ONLINE RANK MATCHES / SEGA'S CARD SYSTEM in Japan is an ingenious idea for one simple reason, and I've been saying this for years, starting when rank matches became few and far between with vanilla 5, in hopes of trying to bring back the action, which I admit was a frivolous attempt due to purely the lack of players.

The reason is this (maybe not the reason but evident nonetheless) - in theory you WILL try harder to win your match when a rank is on the line. Even if you admit to not caring about your rank, psychologically you will try your hardest to not let yourself get demoted, or try your hardest to raise your bar in your current rank.

Do weak / repetitive tactics come about because of this? ABSOLUTELY!

Is it helpful to ones skills in the game to find ways around this? ABSOLUTELY!

Is it helpful to the person getting beat down because of their less experienced tactics in an effort to develop new strategies? ABSOLUTELY!

Is it rewarding to punish weak / repetitive tactics to someone nearby your own rank? FUCK YES!


I've said it a million times, and I know some people disagree with me on this, but RANK MATCHES MAKE YOU PLAY BETTER!!! Whether you're conscious about it or not, THEY DO!

I'm not dissing player matches at all, but you will rarely, if ever, see people fuck around in a rank match. Why? Because something is on the line! When something is on the line you do your best to uphold yourself, even by cable pulling sadly, which is the only downfall of online rank matches (and lag too).

Most of you reading this should see that my post isn't about the topic of caring or not caring about ones own rank, and Myke is definitely right about that (and everything else he wrote and writes). The only reason you should care about someone else's rank is when you say to yourself, "Wow! That's a high rank! I can't wait to challenge this person to see what their skills are like!" And whether people admit it or not it is rewarding to level up, as long as you're going for it with the right intentions.

Some people are too sensitive with others caring about rank names, so let's just leave it at this...

RANK MATCHES MAKE YOU PLAY YOU'RE VERY BEST!

this is ridiculous. The ranking system in vf5fs is a simple elo ranking system. It's used to determine rank in chess and go. You get more points for beating someone higher ranked, lower points for someone lower ranked. Same for losses. There is no limit to how far you can be busted down. So in that respect it is different, as in vf you can't lose your titled rank (hunter) but in most other ways it is the same. The scenario Po is theorizing is so far fetched as to be almost statistically impossible. Also, rank doesn't determine skill...skill is merely reflected in rank. It's imperfect but what in this world is? If master po has a better system, by all means he should share it. The world federations of chess and go would be anxious to hear about it.
just play the damn game and let the chips(ranks) fall where they may. Odds are that your rank is about as close an approximation as feasible at that time. Getting your undies in a bunch ain't gonna change it.

There is another downfall as well- a few of the higher ranked folks use boosts, or other accounts to boost their rank.

so, there are a few higher-up players who may not even be as good as their rank dictates... :\

on topic with ranks, it bothers me to no end that BlackBeltSpartan is in the top 10 on the PSN leaderboards. yikes.

How does that work? Youd need at least two consoles or a friend to do that.
Also Getting two characters up to a decent rank is hardly worth it, if youre just gonna demonte one again to promote the other one. Its probably even more work.

However if you leave one at "Hunter" and level the other with it, you could work your way up. Sadly though, you dont seem to get any points from hunters that have an empty bar. So taht would also just last you for a bit before youd have to level the dummy account again.

If someone does this, they probably spend way to much time on this anyway. Nothing to be bothered about really:/

Kinda random, but. It'd be cool if when you ranked up it was a little more elaborate when it happened, like in VF5. You rank up on FS and it's like "yay, you ranked up, here's a cookie". Doesn't even make a sound when you get promoted. Unless it changes when you get to higher ranks. I'm still in the kyus.

And I guess they figure most people skip the intros, but wow, thanks for leaving the huge notification of match being a promotional match or whatever it says, right there on the middle of the screen hahah.

Hi basho, we've played a few matches. I know these long posts are hard to get through so everyone skims but I don't think rank always identifies skill or is a determiner of skill. I had only one complaint about the ranking system. That complaint is once you join a group (ie. mono) you should only be able to be demoted to the lowest rank in that group. Just like they left Hunter as the lowest rank in the shi group, the defender should be the lowest rank in the mono group etc. I think its ridiculous (however improbable) that someone from the butei group could get demoted all the way back to the shi group
by only one player better than himself.

I mean really, I was TigerClaw yesterday, I finally met my match, we played all night, I lost to him over and over again now I'm back to Hunter, even though I can kick everybody else's ass on the leaderboards? WTF? When realistically I should have never been demoted lower than darkslayer (that would make sense)

Because of demotion the 2nd best online player in the world could be constantly demoted by the best online player in the world, all the way down from TigerClaw to Hunter. Even though, everyone acknowledges that the 2nd best online player in the world really is the 2nd best online player in the world. Except now he has a rank of Hunter as a result of being demoted by the same guy over and over again

Short time fluctuation is normal and statistic even predict it.
If it is as you are claiming in this "paradox", the 2nd best player will be on the 2nd best spot in the latherboard within few hours. Actually, it will take him significantly less games that to be back where he belongs that how long it take him to been demoted to Hunter. Also, you can dodge the player you do not wish to play with.
Exactly as you where dodging me in ranked yesterday.

I am sorry to say it, but you really seem to keep arguing only for the sake of argumentation itself, not caring much about what you are arguing about. My impression from all your endless posts I was reading in last 2 months.

He's the 2nd best because no one else can be him except for the best player And the best player can demote him all the way back to Hunter. Now I know you guys are just pullin my leg, because even my 4 year old niece could understand my point

@Unicorn and anyone else accusing me of dodging. Don't flatter yourselves. You want to play me, invite me to a player room and we'll play as long as you like. or friend me, and I'll invite you to a player room. Otherwise STFU!

This is just a heads-up FYI to all players who play ranked online:

Dention is not the real #1 FS player on XBL. The only reason he's at the top of the ranking list is because he ducks and pulls on the real #1 FS player on XBL: Gentleman Thief.

Gentleman Thief should be the one with the #1 spot since he beats Dention 10 to 0 and pretty much every other VF5FS player online.

Please, stop playing Dention and giving him ranking points. Play GT, even if he beats you you'll actually learn about Jean and how to play the game better.

If you start beating Dention consistently, Dention WILL start pulling on you. Gentleman Thief never pulls.

I wrote Dention about putting him on blast and it was the only time ever he responded to one of my messages.
He wrote back: "You don't have to do that. Everybody knows already."

Please, please stop playing Dention. He's a fraud and a cheat. If you want to play a top level player in Dention's rank range then play Gentleman Thief. He's the real #1 ranked player on XBL
