Yeah I find if you know the timing for when to start struggling the specific stagger it's super easy to break the stagger. I'm lazy, so I'm probably going to be just mashing, but maybe one day I'll learn the unique timings. It feels overwhelming to even try.

    Most stuff does at first.

Like stance specific combos. Those seem to intimidate even veteran players from time to time. But give it a bit of dedicated time and it begins to click.

...I do stance specific combos basically by feel. I like check mid-way through the combo if I think the stance specific ender will hit. I treat my combos like other folks treat their frames, just kinda intuitively know but couldn't tell you exactly what I'm at. Maybe one day if I ever decided to dedicate some time to it.

Here I wrote in detail about how breaking the stagger works.
It's a bit tedious to read but it's an extensive proof.
It confirms KoD's results but it puts everything under an unified theory.

    TLDR version:
Any diagonals before a cardinal direction don't count towards breaking the stagger.
Any diagonals not followed by a cardinal direction count as an input.

if you can time it right you can do it with one input

    I used 9P+K
