My favorite part of this whole mess:
    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif
It's pretty obvious that both sides (believers and non-believers) are not going to get anywhere on "vfdc" XD All you guys can do is respect each others views and opinions. Nobody here is going to seriously say:
"Oh wow, now I see that you're right, your religion is the truth!" /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
    -OR-
"Oh wow, now I see that you're right, God doesn't exist!" /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cry.gif

In case you guys haven't noticed, trying to convince Fulan that his religion is not the truth is like trying to convince Plague that God exists =/
So, please, let's not prolong this inevitable stalemate any further, shall we? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

    Back on topic:
Obama is going to do away with the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy in the military. I don't think that's a good idea, at all. That is going to create a lot of problems and a lot of unnecessary confrontations. I wanted to know what you guys think.

Fulan, I hope it doesn't seem that everyone is against you /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif I find this thread intriguing in any case. One of your recent posts you say that your faith "doesn't prevent me from being respectful with people from other faiths either", yet earlier you say your faith teaches you to "hate in your heart" those "wrong" things you cannot change? Does that seem contradictory, or have I misunderstood the meaning behind what you said?

I guess I find it unsettling that any religion would promote or advocate hating in one's heart. It sounds rather destructive and not a recipe for a happy life (however one defines happiness).

Exactly. I think it would be ridiculous for Fulan to say anything other than "I follow the one true faith". To expect anything less from anyone so dedicated is foolish, and, likely, counterproductive.

I agree. It's not a smart move, but an obvious approach for future votes. Sexual preferences should not be a factor at all when it comes to the military. The topic should never, ever, come up.

If his goal was to remove the forced discharge upon discovery of someones sexual preference, I can agree with that. I wouldn't want to be fired or kicked from the military because they found out I date chicks. So I don't want someone else to get booted for their preference. But it never needs to come up. That shit doesn't need to be out there, not while the job is to protect the country. Matter of fact it should never be in the workplace regardless. I don't walk up to people and ask if they are gay or straight. It's also not appropriate to run around flaunting the shit either. Just do your job and be good at it. That's all there is to it.

For those of us not as well verced on the issue here's a link to the wiki about it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don't_ask,_don't_tell

The military has always been the place where diversity is first accepted so I think this is the best way to slowly move the country toward accpeting homosexuals. And yes the fact that gay marraige is such a heated debate means we're not as accepting of homosexuals as would be neccesary for me to say we on a whole accept them.

In the 30'/40's ? I forget which decade it was exactly but the armed forces integrated and had equal treatment (at least on paper and in relative practice in terms of promotions) of blacks and whites first. The military was much more integrated than the actual country was, so I see this lift of the don't ask don't tell policy a step in the right direction. I think part of what makes these kinds of integration things work in the military is that you basically have no rights to challange supirors so if your officer tells you not to make fun of someone for something they'll punish you for doing so, normally fairly severily.

Christians always say don't hate the sinner, hate the sin. I've never heard anyone complain about that (not just here, anywhere) and that is similar to what I'm saying. Al-wala' wal-bara (one of the basic principles of our religion) is to love what Allah loves and to hate what He hates. He Hates disobedience, and He Hates disbelief.

How can any person with any given set of morals not look with aversion to that which goes against those morals? Or in other words: if you love something with all your heart, how can you just feel indifferent or only a little annoyed at the opposite?
How does anyone ever better themselves if they don't hate their current situation. How does anyone keep on the right track if they don't hate the 'bad' track. To me it is not a destructive force, but something that makes me forward, and makes me weary of falling back.

As for the contradiction, there is none. Like I said, it's similar to the Christian saying.

Allah does not forbid you respecting those who have not made war against you on account of (your) religion, and have not driven you forth from your homes, that you show them kindness and deal with them justly; surely Allah loves the doers of justice.

Allah only forbids you respecting those who made war upon you on account of (your) religion, and drove you forth from your homes and backed up (others) in your expulsion, that you make friends with them, and whoever makes friends with them, these are the unjust. 60:8-9

True, but I like to think I wasn't being so 'simple.' The discussion was more a general one about relying on scripture than it was about my religion anyways.

Doesn't love for the "good" path act as strong if not stronger a motivator than hate for the "bad" path?

Yes, it does. But they don't negate each other, but they act in unison.

Love and hate for the sake of Allah is integral to our faith.

LOL! That's really fucking funny. I chose the name because it reflected the personality of Brad, my main character.

Just FYI, the domestic partnerships that I mentioned in my first post are currently offered to both heterosexual couples and homosexual couples. It's nothing like segregation. And yeah, I was following more of what cuz was saying (my bad), but saying that I was speaking for segregation was pretty extreme. Having separate unions is way different from keeping people separate in society.

Tricky "9000; Eileen Flow Dojoer" Content Manager Eileen

The act of having separate unions intrinsically keeps people separate. If you're going to give them all the same rights then why is there a need for a different name unless there is a level of bigotry which makes one think they are intrinsically better hence they, being the ones in power, feel to keep their superiority need to have a name to differentiate the two.

This goes on in many other fields of knowledge too. Like the comparison of the PHD and the PsYD

I don't really agree, Tricky. If both of them need to get some sort of governmental document to be considered united, and both of them end up with the same benefits, then I see no harm in leaving religious ceremonies and who can participate in them to the religious people.

Are the marriages (and legal benefits thereof) that you mentioned in your post currently offered to both heterosexual couples and homosexual couples? If not, then yes, it is quite a bit like "separate but equal" segregation.

Cue soul coughing "I don't need to talk around in circles, talk around in circles, talk around in ..."

the thing is Hertero's can get a marrage or a civil union Homosexuals can ONLY get a civil union. See the problem?

    Cuz Well-Known Member

You're quite correct, but if marriage is nothing but a religious ceremony, does it matter? If both of them must have a Civil Union to get any benefits would marriages become something like bar mitzvah? I'm not jewish so why would I care if I don't get one?

  16. Tricky

Tricky "9000; Eileen Flow Dojoer" Content Manager Eileen

There is a lot of cultural connections with the term marriage if anything civil unions could be called marriage also as I wouldn't know how to say "i just got civil unioned with someone"? I just got married sounds better
