    I play with pad & stick. But technically, shouldn't playing with a stick be harder, since you don't get the button combinations [P]+[K], [P]+[G], [K]+[G], [P]+[K]+[G], whereas on a pad you do /versus/images/graemlins/cool.gif
    but entering the directions [9][7][1][3] is lot easier on a stick

    i guess its easier because you dont have to use as many fingers on a stick as you do on a pad (that's if you use shoulder buttons). it's really just preference though.

    On the subject I was in Brisbane (Australia) for the new years day and I got my ASS whooped in Tekken Tag cause of the damn joystick, and I rock at TTT! Seriously who prefers a joystick over a pad? *Extreme Anger* /versus/images/graemlins/mad.gif

    I think most ogre players prefer a pad in the home systems of ttt. But that's just what I heard.

    TTT on sticks? no way. Id suck with kazuya and ogre. and yes, from the hundreds of people ive meet who play ogre most perfer pads to sticks,and will even brings pads witht hem to tournaments, or not even go if its sticks only.

    Actually, Kaz is the shit with a stick : easier and faster wave and/or lightdashing. But it's also possible with a pad depending on how fast you are. Not as useful in T4.

    Am I the only pad player that doesn't use shoulder buttons? How can you live with yourselves you cheap bastards /versus/images/graemlins/tongue.gif.

    My setup:

    X - Guard
    Square - Punch
    Triangle - Kick
    All other buttons - No use

    You can actually use shoulder buttons (L1,L2...) but having multiple buttons assigned to one of them like [P]+[K], [K]+[G]... for instance, is considered ''cheating''.
    It doesn't bother me much, and I don't think it's cheating but like I mentioned earlier, some tourneys don't allow them, so make sure to read the rules guys.

    There is one overpowering reason why I prefer pad over stick: grip.

    I'm not talking about the firm grip on a stick for movement, I'm talking about the crushing grip I have on my Dual Shock as a whole. Move execution on stick feels too fluid and 'empty'. There is simply no feel for the force you get literally attacking the pad with your fingers and thumbs.
    My setup:
    X = [G]
    Square and Triangle = [P]
    Circle = [K]

    I am a thumb player and keep an incredibly firm grip on the pad with my palms and heels of my hands.
    I have no problems omitting shoulder button configurations. In fact I can't fathom using a shoulder as a throw. This can be contributed to my years and years of Tekken playing on pad, where I threw with both left ( X + square) or right ( triangle + circle) buttons. My preferrence is with shoulders though due to the grip I have. In that case:
    R1 = [P]+[K]
    R2 = [K]+[G]
    L1 = no use
    L2 = [P]+[K]+[G]

    Since most P+K+G are special movements I prefer having it out of the way where it doesn't get cluttered with my standard buttons, although under pressure I've been known to revert back to shoulderless 'mashing' of the pad face to get my P+K+G.

    I cannot work with square as [G] under any circumstance. Because square is isolated off to the left I find it very difficult to move in and out of guard as quickly and precisely as is needed for fast VF4 play. With [G] embedded below all my other standard buttons I can access everything in the blink of an eye.

    I am curious about other thumb players and how they move on the bottuns. I have seen people pressing buttons individually with the tip of their thumb and wonder how they can be so fast. I rely soley on rolling my thumb across buttons, making use of the tip, side, heel and middle of my thumb. Am I one of the few who roll?

    I also wonder about the use of shoulders. Many people here stated they use one finger on each hand for the shoulders. Due to my grip I use my index and middle fingers on the R/L1 and R/L2 respectively. With my mind moving at the speed of the game I can't get it in my head to move my finger up or down. I need them firmly planted and waiting.

    When everything is put together my pad play is like a violent seizure on the pad (as my friends call it). I roll, pitch and crush the pad with my hands. It feels more like I'm piloting a fighter jet than actually pressing individual buttons. It is this motion and 'feel' which I cannot mimic on a stick. You should all be glad I don't use stick often because I'd show up at your arcades and probably destroy the poor stick, forever mangling the diagonals. /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif

    rofl . That was an interesting post hehe.

    Well in your response to rolling your thumb around the button face, I must say I rarely use rolling in VF. I find keeping my thumb a little over the middle of the daimond makes me move the quickest for responding especially for suscession moves. When i have to hit [P] then [K] very quickly I hit each alone as quick as possible. I've termed this "Eagle Tapping" (coin a phrase *DING*).

    MUHUHAHAHAHA

    About the emptiness of the stick, I won't comment /versus/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

    Well, I only play with a pad since I don't own a stick... but one major problem I see with pads is that after playing for a while I end up with extremely sore hands/knuckles, not to mention pretty serious cases of d-pad thumb.

    Square = Guard = Index finger
    Triangle = Punch = Middle finger
    Circle = Kick = Ring finger
    All other buttons set to No Use.

    This helps me transition a bit more between using a stick and using a pad (which I prefer) aside from the obvious stick vs cross differences.

    I can modify moves, do Akira's 1FK, SPoD, DLC and anything else I need to do on a pad. Yes, I go though Challenge mode like that. Granted, a few of Akira's mod-heavy combos give me a tiny bit of trouble sometimes, but I work around that.

    Then again, I'm getting together the money to build a stick in the future, so meh.

    first time i played with a pad, my thumbs litterally went to hell. you get used to it though if you play a lot.

    p.s. question---when you go to a japense arcade, can you actually plug in a pad, and play with it--instead of using a stick.

    or is pad just a let down for ppl who want to compete in tourneys, and will eventually have to make the jump from pad -- to stick /versus/images/graemlins/mad.gif???
