    I use the default button config, and don't touch the shoulder buttons. I don't use my right thumb, either - I have my forefinger on guard, middle finger on punch, and third finger on kick.

    If I had a stick, I'd use one.. but I don't, so I play with the pad.

    L2 is [P]+[K]+[G] in default settings, and I use this. My it´s just me, not the pad /versus/images/graemlins/frown.gif, I still practise thought...
    I definitely use shoulder buttons, I couldnt do anything without them with Akira
    SPoD= L2--[4][3]L1--[6]X (this is extremely easy!)
    DLC=[3]R2[6]X[4][6][6]R1, I find it very easy this way, I normally can do it 99 out of 100. But I like the [3][K]+[G][6][P] [8]/[2] better.

    There should be a Pad Player Championship annual event for all the pad users. Where only pad players are allowed to enter (of course), all buttons are configurable and the grand prize is a VF4 Evo Hori stick.

    My thoughts as a pad player...

    Well, growing up, I've always played fighting games with pads. SF2 on the SNES being perhaps the first, SF and all it's incarnations, as well as VF1 through 4. All on the pad. It's hard to believe I used to use a freakin' Dreamcast pad for VF3, but so is life. Seeing as there were no arcades with competition around, most of my fighting game experience game from fighting SuperG on a pad. It never clicked that I should be playing on a stick just cause there were no arcades with sticks, and I liked pads.

    I use the config C, which is the layout similar to the Dreamcast's default setting. I don't use any buttons besides p, k, and g. To do this I hold the controller such that I have my right index finger on p, my middle finger on k, and my ring finger on g. I can hit all buttons simultanously like this.

    I have no problem doing modified from crouching moves, crouch dashes, back dashes, and 270 throws. I can't do wolf's perfect giant swing consistantly, Akira's knee, or any nasty modified double palm combos. Then again, they arn't my main characters so its not like I put in a lot of time or effort to learn them, and they arn't the easiest thing to pick up on a stick either.

    Since I moved to Japan I've had problems adjusting to the sticks. For some reason what I think is the proper way to enter a command on the stick just isn't. Of course I like some of the sticks more than others. Anyways, the first thing I had problems with was crouch dashing consistantly in both directions. After that, not noobing up simple chowan combos like chowan -> p -> p -> d/f+p by doing a jumping attack. Now I can crouch dash fine and can do modified from crouching moves, but for some reason I can't do yoho or splash mountain to save my life, even though I get the crouch dash. Then again, my main character Shun doesn't have any of those moves, so I havn't been practing those motions.

    I find it easier to cd -> 270 on a pad than on a stick, but that's just me.

    But yea, I don't understand why, after playing some people, they'll say "... and you can do that on a pad!?! impressive." For me using a pad is the default, and I think that you can do most everything you want to on a pad that you can do on a stick as well, with some things being more difficult for different people to do on each.

    Respect. SC was possible but VF3 was a nightmare. You're a real trooper.

    For thumb players who don't want to use the [P]+[K], [P]+[G], and [P]+[K]+[G] buttons, I suggest :

    Square = [G]
    Triangle = [P]
    Circle = [K]
    X = [G] (Principal guard button and also used for [K]+ [G])

    For Akira thumb players who want to do the knee without changing finger positions add :

    L2 = [K] left index
    R2 = [G] right index
    You'll still have to get your right thumb off the pad but won't have to switch finger positions.

    Well, pad players out there should take Namflow as an example. Use only a pad, and playing with Japan competition in the arcades will feel like a chore.

    Why not just use a stick and be able to play with the best?

    You realize that VF is also a console game right ! A huge amount of players play on pad, some eventually move on to stick and some don't. Arcades in the US isn't as big as Japan, Korea... Most ppl don't have time to hang out at arcades anymore and when they do, VF is the last thing on their agenda. It sucks, but hey life goes on. And it would also suck to go to Japan and not be able to play top players but you still could get the chance to play those guys if and when they come to US tourneys (console tourneys) so where's the problem ? This isn't a stick/pad discussion thread, so there's no need to argue on this. It really gets old after awhile.

    It's simple! Play with a stick, and you can play anywhere. Play with a pad, and you can only play on console. I started playing fighting games with a pad, but made the switch early when I realized that the best competition can only be found in the arcades. It was painful at first, but worth it in the long run.

    For any beginner in VF, or for anyone who plans to visit the mecca of VF in Tokyo sometime in the future, surely it makes sense to learn the game with a stick.

    I won't (and don't plan to) even argue that a stick allows better execution than a pad...

    Ok guys. This is a pad discussion thread, not an argument against or for sticks. I personally use both with ease I just like to play on my pad a lot more than I do on the stick. Please keep the discussion to pad technique, there's really no reason to argue why a stick is or isn't better on a pad. If you want information on sticks just look at the console page. My advice has always been, use both if you want, use one if you wish, it really doesn't matter.

    Your entire post is filled with arguments ! /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif Couldn't resist the urge !?

    Good luck with your stick converting crusade.

    Haha, OK OK, my bad.

    My contribution:

    If I must play with a pad (usually the odd time when I'm bored and there's a VF4/Evo on display at a store), I usually play with the following configuration:

    Cross = Guard = Thumb
    Square = Punch = Index
    Triangle = Kick = Middle

    All other buttons are set to no use. It would feel like cheating otherwise.

    I would usually rest the controller on my right knee (standing or sitting!). This way, I can press all three buttons at once when I need to and I use my knee as the "base" to press against.

    (Plus, this stimulates playing with a stick! /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

    For me, I find crouch dashing easier on the controller than on a stick, but that's about it. Once really nice thing about playing on a pad, however, is that most pads for a given system are pretty much the same. Know how to play on the default PS2 pad, and you can expect similar control with other pads.

    That's not always the case with sticks, where the size and shape of the base (square, octogonal, or circular) makes a huge difference stick to stick.

    Damn I'm bored. Still in the holiday mood...

    As long as you don't have a one button p+g, p+k or p+k+g, it's not considered ''cheating'', I personally don't have any problem with it but some tourneys don't allow them. I learned the hard way and changed my configuration after that.

    I don't know how ppl can play that way : looks and feels awkward to me. Besides thumb = cool. /versus/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

    Naah that's not true at all. The GC controller sucks for fighting games, the Xbox one is aiight, the Dreamcast one was a little too stiff but was ok overall. The DS and DS2 are perfect as far as fighting games go, well atleast for me they are.

    hmmm, thx for the good adv on the pads on this thread... Vith Dos, the "inside" technique now helps me out somewhat, with the moves that need fast inputs.. still having trouble with the shoto moves on a pad. i suck i guess... /versus/images/graemlins/frown.gif

    one thing about a pad, i find doing b,df type of moves easier than on a stick. back in SF2 when i used nothing but sticks, i've always had trouble with doing Balrog's low rushing punch. generally speaking, i find pad inputs to be more precise, but slower than a stick.

    anyway, for us not so serious players, we have to learn to play pad- because chances are when we are over at somebody's place with a ps2, they may have a Evo or some other fighting game, but they will not likely have a stick, or if it is, it'll be some pelican crap.

    I used pads(controllers) for years, the best being the Saturn 8 button. Finally, when in a ranking match about 6 months ago, I decided never to use one again. Loosing because you dodged while trying to double palm and ended up with a failed evade was to me a "Finallity". Doing lots of cd's caused me to by pads once every three weeks any damn ways. I liked playing on controllers, it was all I knew. But now I know better. What Id like to see is footage of pad players.
