I love how players claim to know more about game hardware and network programming than actual programmers

Who ever said that "Syzygy" was an actual programmer?

Speaking as an actual programmer, I find it very hard to believe that a patch is "impossible", even if they can't use sony's standard patch mechanism. "Extremely difficult and unlikely", yes, impossible, no.

it's all politics, i am sure Microsoft moneyhatted or made a deal with Sega.

well to be fair I'm sure Sony made a deal to make VF5 exclusive for a few months.

Remember Sega gave a crap answer about about portable user profiles, saying it was a hardware issue?

I can already copy my save profile from the ps3 to an external storage.

Gee, Sega could easily have more money if they sold an update for the PS3.

OK. I'll change my thinking on this based on your response and KoD. Rather than not possible, I'll say not economical.

You don't need to be a genius to understand the basic works of software updates. It's just like KoD said (and he is an actual programmer, happy?), it may be unlikely, but it's not impossible.
And Plague is probably right, not economical either (but I surely wouldn't mind paying US$10,00 for Online upgrade)

Also - by not economical, I meant "too expensive to rewrite source code, re-compile, and distribute new form of PS3 VF5 that is updatable online."

I'm inclined to believe the code on the PS3 VF5 disc is not updatable online as it is - and there is no elegant way to make the current version upgradable via downloadable content.

I would guess that being technically possible like KoD and DarkVincent mean is irrelevant. Sony doesn't want Sega writing their own update code rather than using the proper system hooks and whatnot. The amount of system control that Sega's theoretical update code would need to do an update would almost certainly be far outside the limit of what Sony would be willing to test/certify.
