Hey, been lurking here for info since FS was released.

This is my first VF game and I'm enjoying it a lot.

I've played various fighting games but never really dedicated time properly to one apart from a pseudo-fighter mech pvp game called Virtual-On: Oratorio Tangram also by Sega (noticed neokens video thread here )

I'm one of the best european players for that game (definitely online at least), but that isn't saying much since the western community is extremely small. Online in japan is decently active though, which is very impressive considering the XBLA version has been out for over 3 years by now and the game itself is 12 years old.

I'm only using Aoi in VF5 FS so far, I like how she feels like a more technical and defensive character but I might try other characters at some point. I have a tendency to only concentrate on one character in games like these though. I'm playing on a 360 pad with a slightly modded d-pad but I guess I'll get a stick at some point if I keep playing (not now though, going to disappear into the finnish army in less than a month lol)

Hopefully I'll stick to it and keep getting better [IMG]

What's up everyone. This is my first entry into the VF series but I am really loving it. I've had the pleasure to do some bouts with KillaKen, VFnumbers, & AUIMDIGIMAN. Although I was having some connection issues apparently, great fights. It's always refreshing to be around high level comp. I was able to see my weaknesses. I'll be sticking with Shun Di as my main for the forseeable future.

My previous fighting game experience came by way of Soul Caliber 4 (Yoshimitsu, Voldo, Tira) and Dead or Alive 4 (Brad Wong, Helena, Gen Fu, Lie Fang, Ayane, Christie, Eliot). I'll be looking closely at DOA 5, but for now, I have caught the Virtua Fighter bug. 98% of my gaming is done on the PS3 btw.

Hey Everyone! first time visitor to this forum, so nice to meet you all!

I been playing VF since the days of VF2 in the arcades as a kid. Recently got VF5FS and playing it with a fight stick has brought back so many fond memories that I can't get enough of it!

Because of the fact that I've been playing since I was young, certain bad habits have stuck with me and after watching several videos on youtube, I have purposely set my challenge to try and break out of them! Plainly put...........Button Mashing! XD

I've main Jacky since VF2 but after getting FS I've been training with Goh, Akira and Jean (mainly want to try and get better with Akira) and being enjoying the more technical side of the game.

I'm would like to come across guys online who is cool with playing me and helping me learn to get better and break out of the old habit of the child-like mash up! (I know you cant get that on UMVC as its all about looking better than the others and TK6 couldn't really happen because of the connection quality.)

Once again nice to meet you all and I hope to play you online soon. (I'm on XBL for the time being!)

Hello, I'm LondonLust and this is the first VF forum I've ever been to.
I'm a DOA player that's waiting for DOA5, and I wanted to try out VF. It's not nearly as hard as I thought it would be, which is good.

    Andddd that's about it [IMG]

Hey I'm andy, always a lurker on forums really. Fairly new to VF, played vanilla for a while after deciding to try it and was really pleased and am extremely pleased with FS.

I'm a long time tekken player, and can incorporate a couple of skills into this game, although I must say VF evade is so superior to tekkens sidestepping which basically doesn't work.

Playing Goh at the moment, loved him from the moment I saw his brutal judo throws and like his simple 50/50's with high damage counter hit combos. Also slowly learning Aoi, basically I love throw characters [IMG]

My gamertag on 360 is Osotogarai, looking for a challenge and players to help me improve my game, as ranked match currently is just not helping me improve mainly due to the whole "must win and rank up" mentality.

I have picked up the game fairly well and feel my Goh is coming along nicely but want to take it to the next level and the game is just ridiculously addictive.

Any adds and ill be more than happy to play some games with anyone [IMG]

Hi sandwraith here. Stumbled across this site while searching for tips on Sarah and Goh. Not a very competitive player but am eager to see if I can pull off a fraction of the cool stuff I see players do on Youtube.

Long time fighting game player but I'm fairly new to VF especially VF5FS which is incredibly complex and it may take me awhile to learn most of the mechanics of the game (the "When hit or Guard" timing input still has me cursing in frustration. Hope to get as many tips from you veterans and maybe I can do the same when I learn some new stuff.

I come from a SFIV background. That's what I know and that's all I know how to play. I'm really bad at VF atm but I'm trying to learn. I've been trying to learn Jeffry but so far I've won 2 matches out of 50, with 1 opponent AFK (almost lost that one too). I'd love to find someone that knows how to teach. I really want to learn this game but at the moment I don't quite know what I'm doing wrong. I never seem to be able to press any buttons it seems.

    Hey guys,

I noticed that your forum has very few thread clutter, and since I have the noobest question possible I will just ask it here.

Is it possible to install VF5: FS on a USB stick for the xbox 360?

My brother`s Xbox hard drive has only 997 MB free. This seems like one of the models with 4 GB drives. He used to have a white Elite Xbox 360 with big HD but that one got RROD even though it was rarely played, so were stuck with the small HD now.

I`m normally a PC gamer, and the only fighting games I own are SF4: AE on Steam and vanilla SF4 from gamersgate before that, but I saw that VF5 has nice graphics and VERY intuitive gameplay, so I really want to give it a try.

    Yo!!!

A good friend of mine got me into VF and fighting games for that matter by way of his being a very serious player of the game and part of the VF community. Watching him play VF and other fighting games for some time and hearing about it definitely led to some curiosity for me in the past but it never amounted to much and I put it in the back of my mind (I bought a used copy of VF4 and played it for all of 13 minutes).

However over time my interest increased especially as I heard him talk about the skill building involved in fighting games (especially VF), the competitive environment evolved, and the community around it all. He and I had played counterstrike competitively and both loved it so hearing him talk about fighting games tinged with the same sort of passion he had for one of my former passions got me ever more excited. However even when I got excited I just always felt like fighting games were beyond me as I had always been terrible at them as a kid and anytime I touched them it seemed too fast and complicated for me.

Recently however this friend has started rooming at my house while he is a cripple (his other passion of hockey is to blame) and I got to see him playing VF in person all the time!! That was the last straw. I sat down, manned up and decided to give fighting games a fair shake. With a little help from my friend giving me friendly pointers for the absolute beginner I soon found myself ready to try some actual play against real people. So I picked myself a character (Brad) and 90 matches latter (all of which were lost except the four I had against other brads) I can say fighting games and VF in particular are/is AWESOME!!! While the initial barrier to entry was really high I can say I am glad I finally jumped it and hope to keep jumping all the barriers that pop up on the way to actually becoming a half way decent VF player.

Anyway that was longer than my current losing streak. Hope to see you around.

Just got VF5FS myself two or three days ago (it was a feature of PlayStation Plus which I've got on me for the next 3 months). And I just want to say that ever since my solo days of VF4E on the PS2, this has been a long wait.

I only got my PS3 a little over two months ago, so I'm a rather fresh face in the PSN scene. But I play Eileen and more or less feel like I'm getting SOMEWHERE. Maybe not *there* but I'm at least on the way.

My PSN is RenvaltEX and if anyone cares enough, shoot me a knife (read: invite) and be sure to bring some supplementary Roast Cat Neck for the pre-game and post-game feast.

We're gonna have a party, have a ball. And have some Cat Neck too, it's delicious.

Hello everyone! The only 3d fighter I played before VF5FS was Tobal no.1 and 2. I thought that I just didn't like 3d games except the tobal series until I played vf5. I come from a background in ST. I am learning so much with this game. Whenever I go back to a 2d fighter after a long VF session I feel my footsies and yomi improve. I am lucky enough to have a group of about 7 or 8 guys (myself included) in town who are getting into the new release. None of us could agree on one fighter before. We played ST, 3S, SFIV, UMVC3, KOF, and Skullgirls but not everyone liked a single game until VF5.

The things I love about VF so far: the pace, the reading, the adaptation that takes place so many times mid round, and burning hammer :)

My character so far is Wolf. I want to stick with him only so far. Trying to memorize frame data for Wolf (and of opposing moves I get hit with)

Hi .. I'm new here (First post FTW) and I'm really enjoying playing FS. The problem I have is that this game has a billion new concepts to me , so I'm having a lot of trouble winning.

Also , I'm not a newb to fighters. I've been playing tournaments for 2d fighters for about 10 years (I'm also a rather accomplished BB player , go me). But it's just that I'm not winning when I play FS online at all. It's just making me frustrated , but I don't want to put down the game.

So I'm looking for someone to potentially help me grasp the concepts of the game in a more physical manner. I watched that 3 hour long tutorial and understood the concepts in it. Putting them into practice is a different manner. I tend to learn better when someone actually teaches me.

So I'd love for someone to do so.

Also... I heard starting with Vanessa doesn't help my case either. But she's got everything , and I think her style(s) are so god damn cool. So there's no way I'm not playing her.

Hey vash this is the place to post it no doubt.i'm new as well so i feel you on that account. It a deep end of the pool to jump into VF but swimming is still swimming no mater how deep the water.

my advice to my fellow new players is under stand your basics. basically 3 things

    1. get a hand full of moves. and 1 or 2 combos that you can use when ever. don't try for that full move list yet. some good pokes. a move to control far, and a move to control close and 1-2 combos off a juggle.

    2. the block button is ok to press. no need to go mashers mashers. i mean yeah blocking sets up being thrown, but it also sets up not taking 70% from a combo.

3 just watch your opponent and react to him doing silly things. always attacking on wake up for example if you see that, you can punish that. makes simple reads is a easy thing and something i have no doubt you know well from playing d2 fighters.

    thanks bro...

My biggest problem is getting out of scenerios where I'm at disadvantage ATM. If I've blocked that +2 P , I don't quite know what to do to get it back to neutral. Fuzzying their next move (mid or whatnot) what I'm doing. But I feel like I get pressured too hard against players that are either panic mashing (I guess) , or never dropping their advantage it seems.

I know some of it is inexperience against the cast and what they can do. But A LOT of it is basically not being comfortable or knowing how to use the universal defensive tools in the game. I've been getting by on Sabakis in DS so far , but it doesn't seem solid enough.

EDIT : I'm having issues on how to play the neutral game as well. The hitboxes in this game seem really disorienting to me. In all the 2d fighters I play , I'm really focused on winning in neutral. In this.. I just don't know how to go about it.

I think the biggest thing to get used to compared to other FGs, and especially 2D FGs, is that VF doesn't really have much of a neutral game. You'll spend most of your time in game at a frame advantage or disadvantage. You certainly can play some footsies with spacing, movement, timing, etc., but that's not really the focus of the game.

The big thing I see in your post is the idea that you're playing against people who never drop their advantage. That pretty much doesn't happen in VF. The game isn't built around maintaining a frame advantage (pretty much everything is negative on block, and many of the fastest attacks that people rely on* are negative on hit) so what that says to me is that either a) you're having trouble figuring out when it's your turn to attack or b) you're attacking your opponents mid-string and getting nailed by delays. Most VF strings are very, very delayable, and that can be a killer.

I think if you're starting out, fuzzy and ETEG are not really where you ought to be focusing your attentions. The big thing will just be learning to throw basic punches and counter-hit elbows after a block or landed [P] to take the advantage, and then mixing up between launcher and throw ... and getting used to the fact that online, especially in the kyus and dans, players tend to be hyper-aggressive and throws will almost never work (but you'll be racking up counter-hit launches by the dozen). VF option select defenses are very powerful, but the basic rhythm of gameplay is more important.

*Outside the very basics. General rule: basic punch, low punch and high full circular are advantageous on hit. Elbow and side kick are even on hit. Pretty much everything else is negative if it comes out really quickly, and neutral or positive if it's slower.

ed: this is on regular hit. You do tend to get advantage on counter pretty well everywhere.

I think it's because of 2d fighters that I think of everything being "safe-ish". Unless it's blatent , I tend to try and just block myself out of pressure and try and backdash-evade out (terrible habit in this game I know). I also do get tagged out of my retort because they're doing strings that I don't recognize. This is from inexperience with the cast , and I accept that.

Question though ... let's say I'm at -4 and go to defensive move (because a ton of the players I've been playing on ranked never try to throw me out of it) .. what should I do after a successful move ? Rather.. what are the go-to options afterwards ?

EDIT : what is the proper notation/abbreviation for Backdash-evade ?

So how do I get in ? I've been trying to get my opponents to whiff something and then get in/whiff punish . Is this the wrong mentality to have ?

  19. rattlejaw

    rattlejaw Active Member

Whiff punishing does work (though again, you need to be reaaaally careful of people who try to lead with strings), but there's not really one particular way. In the short term, I'd concentrate on either leading with a punch if you think you'll take the initiative, or just playing carefully and blocking to take frames back. Most people online will give you that opportunity, because all they want to do is attack. Once you're comfortable with the timing, you can mix in all sorts of other stuff (like 44K or 44K cancels, tech crouch/jump attacks, etc.)

I'm afraid I can't really be more specific because I don't know Vanessa very well.

Hey guys, VF scrub joining the boards. I usually only join forums where I can avoid these pesky introductions and instead answer question aftter question and discuss on equal terms right away...
    BUT, yeah, I'm a scrub.
I've checked out all the tutorial videos and researched a liiiittle bit. I'm playing online as no one around here besides me has VF5, yet...
I'm experienced to say the least, with Tekken, Soul Calibur, but I play a little everything, so...
anyway, I'm currently maining Jean, plan on trying out Shun-Di and Vanessa at some point.
these days spend my time counter launching everyone and suffering Aoi's parries and ground grapple abuse.
