    vf5 newbie

I haven't played VF since VF2. Im getting my xbox next week. I already have the game.

What character do you recommend for a newcomer to VF5? I really like Sarah, but I'm hearing she is weak in VF5.

Don't listen to those people, Sarah is good in VF5, but you need to know how to play her.

My first impression was that he's complicated to learn cause of the various ways to go into and come out of slipping and ducking. If you mean wether he's viable for competion then yea he is, just like every other character really.

I've heard that once you really know the game then Eileen is easy to beat, because all of her moves are so linear and predictable. What do you guys think?

Character choice for an indecisive person.

Alright. I have played VF5 for quite a while, since it came out for 360. I originally started with Goh, and found him too complicated. I have since learned to be "reasonable" with goh...I win about half the matches I play online with him. I have also tried akira... I can do most of his moves, but often find that most of the time I end up using the same few combos. The same goes for Goh. I considered trying Lei Fei, but he always struck me as "cheap". I don't like characters that are too easy... Lau, jacky, and Sarah hold no interest for me. I'm looking for someone who has compilcated fighting style, but moves that arent impossible to execute. Any character suggestions? I've been looking at Lei Fei, Vanessa, Eileen, Aoi, etc. Help!

Akira is a good choice. I find he is the most classic character with the the most real actions in VF since I myself practice Ba-ji-quan. However, he is harder to be controlled and expertized than others. You have to strive for a good sense of fight. You should not be worried about using the same few combos. There is a Chinese proverb which says even if you know thousands moves, it is better to perfect a few. Good luck!

Lei Fei is cheap at entry level play, spam tactics lose their effectiveness when you play experienced players and at that point Lei Fei becomes one of the more complicated characters to use.

I say play Jeffry, he's simple but complex in the sense that you need a good understanding of the game in general to use him effectively imo.

Actually, that's not that bad, considering if you're always fighting people at the same level who are as equally good as you, then you should only be winning 50% of the time, right?

its pretty much well known that jacky, lau, pai, and and jeffry are the main easy characters as well as playin a simple aoi

jeff and jack have no counters or reversals (not counting pak sou)
like as soon as you know the basics of the game, you can play with them effectively. I dont play lau or pai, but I remember as a kid playin lau and pai and bein able to mash buttons pretty good with em

I've played some low ranked Kyus using Lau and Jacky that can still engage in some punishing moves, then again it might be my poor skill level. I enjoy Vanessa because I like a good mix of defense and offense, and Vane has some brutal reversals that are quite easy to master and come in handy against button mashers and those players who don't mix up their moves.

Re: VF5- Which Fighter should I play?

Hey guys, I've been lurking around these forums for a while and after some troubles irl, college and whatnot, I finally could pick up my copy of VF5 to play.
Basically I have played VF1 and 2 waaay back in the day (over 10 years ago, all I did was mashing buttons), and I'm pretty good at Tekken nowadays (playing mostly with Hwoarang, Lili and Asuka, in this order). I've read the VF5 System page on the wiki and now I've been trying to play around with different characters. All of them seem very interesting, but it's being a bit frustrating for me to start out for a few reasons:

#1) I can't pick one to specialize on. I like Brad, Lion and Vanessa a lot so far, but I'm not confident I understand the mechanics of the game enough to say "oh, this will be my main" which leads me to reason #2.

#2) I have little patience for dojos/training modes, though I always check them briefly to try out a couple moves. So I have been trying to play against the AI. Everyone suggested me to configure the AI to the highest difficulty (Hard on Quest Mode, Very Hard on Arcade), but I get my ass handed to me everytime when I play that way. Even in the Beginner's Arcade on Quest Mode.

So any tips to this newcomer?

Lastly, I play the PS3 version and I don't have an arcade stick (don't plan on investing in one anytime soon either).

    Thanks a lot in advance!

Re: VF5- Which Fighter should I play?

My story was practically the same as yours, I've been playing Tekken for a very long time, became decent in it and played around with VF a bit on the side(Mostly mashing on 4 and EVO...)...Then pretty much dropping Tekken, except for the occasional T5: DRO shenanigans...and seriously getting into VF5 for the PS3.

Anyways, you seem to prefer the "learn as you go method" like myself, however, after my losses started piling up in the Quest Mode I reconsidered my original thoughts about not using the Dojo Mode..I went in there and made sure I learned every command with every character that I attempted to learn(Except for KNEE with Akira, I could never get that down...)...as well as practicing all of the system controls and any combos I could come up with(I really love trying come up with combos on my own instead of looking at lists...)...In short, use it, you have nothing to lose!

When it comes to selecting a character, go into Dojo Mode, learn the character inside and out, and test your theory out in he Arcade and Quest Modes...Then you'll easily be able to narrow down the character(s) that you like...Also try to focus on one, or maybe two(This is what I always do, a main and a secondary) characters at first, depending on what you like to do...

As far as Arcade and Quest Mode are concerned, don't get in over your head, just take your time and go through each of the modes on Normal setting with your character(s) and then increase the difficulty as you go along...That's probably the best way to get familiar with the game...

Also, another important thing you'll need to do, is read up on is throw escapes...It's not like in Tekken where you can mash square and triangle together to break out of any throw...You have to press the directional input the opponent presses along with the throw command to break them here...

    So, check this out:
    http://gohnotes.wordpress.com/2008/06/17/throw-escapes-made-easy/

Leonard McCoy puts throw escaping into a quick and easy way to understand, it's very helpful.

You can also use the VF Wiki that is on this site for help, I personally don't, but if you wanna study up on VF then go ahead...

As for a stick, I also don't use one of those, I stick with the pad...It's very comfortable for me in fighting games and...It saves money. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

    Later

BTW, if you want to see vids of how pros use the character(s) you like, head over to the character sub-forums on here and each one should have a thread for vids of that character...Watching is also another good way of learning, later! ^_^
