I'm having a difficult character deciding what character to learn/stick with. I started out on Goh, but I feel like I don't know the game well enough to make a Sabaki/Grapple character work. Typically, I like characters with strong wake-up games who really put pressure on a fallen opponent and similarly characters with good corner (2d) and wall (3s) games. Who are some characters that have strong Okizeme game?

    character choice

im totally new to virtua fighter and a former doa player
i ll qualify for the national team of germany and still have about 3 months of training but first i have to pick the right character.

first of all i need a character which is not that difficult to start with because im not familiar with the vf system which is totally different to the doa system!
but beside that fact this character should be able towin on higher competition!

so which characters do you suggest....thx for your help:)

Iceman- Knockdown. Wall. Corner. This is what Akira's dinner bell sounds like. Just check out some replays, go through some movelists and pick who appeals to you...every character on the roster is going to look good after they've knocked their opponent down & trapped them in the corner!

Were I a betting man I'd say you'll stick with Goh because nobody else gets that wicked leather jacket right away.

DieKrake- The game is balanced enough for any character to be able to stand up to "advanced competition". If you narrowed your choice to Kage, Lei Fei, Pai & Shun you'd be picking one of the characters people most like to complain about. 3 months? Good luck.

s-aki so you mean that Kage, Lei Fei, Pai & Shun are no good characters to choose?

I trained with kage and lei fei Pai but I think they're sucky because they're slow and Pai got low damage attacks.

Someone can give me advise to choose a character that's fast and got a got good punches?

kage and lei fei are great characters. he just meant that a lot of people complain about them due to the tricky properties of their moves. And Pai does plenty damage if she is used right.

Two combos with Pai and you kill your opponent.

yea she does have wall combo´s that do oover 100pts damage. but show me a match where a pai does two in a row.

    those thing´s don´t normally happen.

a character you like. go into the dojo and do some quest mode with the characters that appeal to you and then pick your favorite.

and go to youtube and watch match videos of the characters that interest you.

Goh is probably a pretty tough character to start with because he is more dependent on sabakis (reversal style attacks) than other characters. What that means is that you have to be able to read your opponent more effectively than if for example you are playing Pai, Jacky, Lau or other characters that have extremely effective rush downs.

As beginners likely have no real understanding of how a match might flow, it will probably be harder for them to read their opponents. That's my take at least.

Makatiel, ur basically right, but i don't like chars like jacky with tons of strings. too much to keep in mind. and learning other chars' movelists to succesfully use goh's sabakis isn't the worst thing either.

So I'm new to VF5, I have played VF4 EVO with Jacky, but his style gets boring after a while. I want to pick a different character this time, and Kage is very interesting but the inputs are impossible with a Xbox 360 controller. So is Lau any good until I buy an arcade stick? He doesn't seem very popular, but can he compete?

Lau is a good choice for pad-players I´d say.
I used him for about 2 month until I decided to get an arcade stick. If possible, I´ll never use a pad for VF again, but except of moves like /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/ub.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif (which sometimes became /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/u.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif) I could perform everything quite good using one.

Ok I went through all the characters in the dojo and narrowed my selection down to three characters. I can't decide between Jacky, Jeffry, and Wolf. I'm relatively new to this game so I'm wondering which character would be the best for me.
