Come on man, if you're gonna talk about swing, post some SWING!

This was originally entitled 'Blue Balls', but since you can't call it that on radio...

I never really got what it meant to swing until I heard this piano solo:

And if we're talking swing, there's gotta be some dancing, too!

Just 'cause it isn't old-school doesn't mean it ain't good stuff, y'know? Not that I mean to speak ill of the classics, of course.

I'd never say something wasn't good because it's not old (except maybe about cheese [IMG] ), but what you posted just didn't swing [IMG]

It's got enough swing for me, anyway.

    This is what swing is:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6tW54kRfHs&t=6m37s

(I marked a time near the end, so the piece is nice n short [IMG] ). It's a different way of syncopation, which, when it all comes together, makes you want to dance. Try to hear it! You'll get what I meant when I said it doesn't swing.

I know a lot of people use the word swing in a different way, so maybe I've been trolling a little bit. Sorry about that [IMG] . I just feel like people should open their ears a bit more. Just because it was made a long time ago, doesn't mean it can't still be hip or fresh! It's all a matter of really listening to it. I used to hate Bird, just didn't sound interesting to me, all those fast notes. Now I've heard (and listened to) a lot more stuff and when I hear Bird play, I just really feel it, you know?

Try it! The music will give you a lot in return! There's so much there, for everybody [IMG] . Of course, there's just as much stuff in modern music, so I guess it's still a matter of taste and preference;)

If I can weigh in on this...

I think the piece that Genesis posted would be classified as 'nu swing' or 'pop swing'. I get the impression that it's people who like or admire swing and decided to play it but don't really live the lifestyle and thus don't understand where swing comes from. It doesn't seem truly authentic or original. This is somewhat demonstrated by the sampling of Cab Calloway's Minnie the Moocher mid song. I'm not a swing fanatic btw, just watched the Blues Brothers a shit ton which is how I recognised it.

I just watched Krys vid. But the above is how I see it. I think you need to live the lifestyle to make the music authentic or at least emotive.

Unrelated to above but really nice.

And yeah, cause Tommy Emmanuel is a boss.

Makes sense to me. I've found a very similar tendency among people to over- and often misuse "Metal" as a label for other styles that are sort-of similar but lacking entirely in everything that made the genre what it is in the first place. Perhaps all music genres have that same sort of misconceptions; surely from the outside looking in.

Respect to the Beasties and their contributions to music, including a ton of classic hip-hop joints. Not many people cared for their live band instrumental tracks, but I personally loved them.

And many of their videos still have me cracking up because of the craziness going on in them. Case in point:
