Oh, you play sax too? Sweet!

This trumpet solo is dangerous! It's not actually Dizzy or any of the other guys on the pictures playing here, but who cares, it's awesome!

Tricky plays the sax? Go ahead with your bad self!

Love the funky jazz video clips you and Krye have been posting. Keep them coming, guys.

Haha, I don't know what in the world I was watching much of the time in the videos Hegiko posted. Thank you for sharing them though.

Edit: Just heard more of the music tracks posted going back from the previous page onto this one.

The Solar Fields "Monogram" track Kobi posted sounds like something while making a journey underwater. That is one really immersive tune.

I can visualize folks dancing in kilts listening to "Last of the Wilds".

Really like the video clip of Spanish duet with Tomasa La Mancita and Manuel Parrillo. Love the guys in the background chanting while she's getting her groove on throughout the show.

What more can be said about Sonny Rollins? He's as big of a jazz legend with the sax as Herbie Hancock is with the piano.

lol @ the video of Warlord's live performance of "Black Mass". Nothing like watching footage of those memorable 1980s rock groups.

And I still can't believe the fact that I actually watched a music video of a Japanese gospel group. Heh, I had to do a double take when seeing that for the first time.

Nice example of why jazz is the best.

    Love it!

But what's the guy on piano doing with his left hand when he puts it on top? Is he trying to dampen the sound to make sure the notes don't ring out I.E. Palm muting for piano?

Edit: K well I listened to it again and that must be what he's doing right? Sorry if it seems obvious, dno much about piano.

Didn't watch the vid but from what you describe that's probably not what's happening.

On piano you have pedals that will alter the sound of the notes, you have three pedals and they're all operated with your feet. I'm not actually sure what all three are for but I know one is for sustained notes, the pedals change how the notes sound by moving the strings or changing the tension on the strings through various ways.

Not 100% sure about this but the only changes I know you can make with the actual keys are velocity changes, by playing the keys softer/harder.

EDIT: Ok, looked at the vid. Looks like he his actually reaching inside the piano to do something with the strings. I've no idea why he would be doing that, unless his piano has missing/broken parts [IMG]

    Watch the vid, Feck!

You're exactly right Boris, he's putting his hand on the strings to get a dampened kind of sound [IMG]

Not nearly as awesome as the other vid, but the technique becomes a bit more clear in this vid, I guess.

Piano's have a pedal for that though [IMG]

EDIT: Now i've read about it too and seems like none of the pedals have this function. I don't understand that because all the pedal would have to do is drop something to dampen the strings.

It's even stranger when you consider that playing pizzicato on piano limits what you can actually play since you'll be using one of your hands to dampen the strings yourself. I guess pizzicato must not be used enough on piano to warrant another seperate pedal for it.

Those guys in the quintet are jammin'! Roy Hargrove got the party started early and the sax guy Justin Robinson took it home late.

    Thanks for sharing, Krye.

Krye you got some great taste man. I enjoyed both of the horn player solos. The sax was unreal, and everyone demonstrated excellent control.

I've been playing sax for a loong time now, going on 14 years now. I minored in jazz sax performance back in undergrad and still play out when I get a chance. I got a few vids online.

    Here's some nice piano

Freddie Hubbard rocking it out with Stanley Tureniene, Ron Carter and I think Herbie is on keys here.

    Whoops, thought I replied..

Anyway, 14 years! I've only been playing for 3.. [IMG] wish I'd started earlier!

Nice version of Red Clay there, I need to listen to some more Freddie Hubbard.

Bear with this for the first 1:30 minutes (I think the lady has an annoying vibrato) and you'll start to smile the biggest smile you've smiled today [IMG]

This album gon be supa fresh. Always good stuff when these two get together for tracks. This their second album like this together.

Stay gettin my rock on too hahah. Matts' harmonies are always amazing too.

And if you like poppin, you'll probably have to get up for this one. Or just get down in your chair hahah.

And I normally don't like scream/growlin singing with metal, but the mix of that with clean female vocals and techno is pretty awesome. I like most all the songs from that album.

One more from them just cause, just the female on this one. Would be good for a racing game.

Heh, I didn’t know Yuzo Koshiro was still composing music. That’s good to know. I’ve always respected his work.

Listening to “Black Zone†reminds me of a techno/trance track that I really liked back when I religiously played the arcade and Saturn versions of Sega Touring Car Championship. It’s called “Intenseâ€:

Hey, as a matter of fact Kobi, you may enjoy the entire STCC soundtrack since it’s clear to me that you’re avid listener of techno/trance music. You should check the STCC tracks out whenever you have the chance.

About Yuzo... people praise his music that’s been featured on the Streets of Rage series and deservedly so. But my bonafide favorite stuff from him were the ones he done for the Revenge of Shinobi soundtrack. Many of those RoS tunes still sound great today. The background music for stages 4 (“Ninja Stepâ€), 6 (“China Townâ€), 7 (“Over the Bayâ€) and end-of-stage boss track ("Terrible Beat") in particular are incredible to me along with, in my opinion, the greatest Yuzo track of them all -- "The Shinobi". I mean, this track still makes my jaw drop and listen in amazement. Absolutely mind-blowing.

Ash Kaiser, I grew up on the Underground Resistance, who were a big part of the Detroit Techno scene. That track was created around the time several groups like the UR were fusing electronic/techno with house music. Some like the direction of this genre while others did not. Anyway, I really liked the track and video you posted. Thanks for sharing.

My girlfriend got me into Detroit Techno as well. She loves the stuff.

As for the STCC soundtrack, Inductee (the car select theme) always stood out to me. Ah, the days of games having their music as audio tracks on the CD.

And Terrible Beat was awesome. You knew when you heard that that something was going to mess you up. The music in RoS was much darker than the first one and Shinobi III, but I prefer the music in III to the others.

Yuzo was and still is a master at creating the right type of mood with his music. When you heard "Terrible Beat" in Revenge of Shinobi you knew something intense was about to go down. And the same adrenaline-fueled effect is created when I hear "Never Return Alive" from Street of Rage 2 -- videogame house/dance music at its finest:

Man do I miss badass end-of-stage boss music in games, which actually used to be the norm at one time. The Shinobi games, the Streets of Rage games, the Space Harrier games, the Contras, the Castlevanias, Rastan, the R-Types, the Gradiuses, the Thunder Force games along with legions of other action/adventure games and shooters had this. Nowadays, boss themes are rarely included in games.

And although there are plenty of videogame music tracks created these days that are of good quality, I believe far too much of it is geared to clean, orchestral-style production to best imitate what's played in movies. There's just not much variety out there in game music like there was from the late '80s through the '90s.
