Lol, I just watched the movies cos I don't plan on getting a interactive movie game. I didn't like the past games much either but I love the movie like feel and how the game is presented.

    *slight movie spoiler*
If I got hurt that much as in those videos, I'd be dead by now, lol.

Anyone playing the game of the year?

I'm going to say it: I think MGS3 is the best game of the year. I haven't played Half-Life 2 yet (and I will when I get a new laptop), but ... I'm just stunned at this game... it's incredible.

For one, the cutscenes are very well done, with over the top scenes as well as very realistic action that is based on military hand to hand combat techniques... the art style and graphics in both these cutscenes and the game are very good and push the PS2 to its limits.

Secondly, the new gameplay systems are extremely innovative, push the game to new levels, and improve leaps and bounds from MGS2.

And finally, the story and characters are just amazing. The story is not as complicated as MGS2, but at the same time, it has all the depth that this series demands. (haven't beaten it so I don't know how much loose end stuff it ties up).

RagingSilver: You say interactive-movie game, but MGS is so much more than that. Compared to a game like Splinter Cell, you have loads more interactivity, AI, unpredictability, and overall, just more fun. Splinter Cell isn't a bad game (I especially liked the Multiplayer in Pandora's Tomorrow), but the game feels like molasses compared to MGS3.

The great thing about MGS3 is that it gives you more choices than MGS2. I love the stealth element, and I always try to go through the entire game using stealth. But sometimes, you screw up, and you have to fight your way out. In MGS3, you have so many options in combat, like whether to take a guy hostage and shoot the other guards charging at you, or whether to throw a flashbang and shoot them in the back, grab the unmanned turret around the corner and light them up... it's endless fun. Even when I screw up, sometimes I just rub my hands together and smile. You couldn't really feel that good about it in MGS2, but this game allows you to be discovered and truely fight your way out, which I like. The only thing is that fighting your way out is too easy, and stealth is really the best challenge. On my second run I'm going to try the harder difficulty levels, so that when I run-and-run, it's truely challenging and it makes me think twice about making too many mistakes.

I haven't even gotten into the camoflauge system, the stamina bar which you replensish by hunting animals for food, the CRAZY bosses that are a lot of fun to kill... etc.

If you really don't like MGS's controls, I think your missing out. Sure it's tough to get used to, but once you've played a while things get easier, and you can understand how such a unique and in some ways, counter -intuitive control scheme can fit the game perfectly, give you perfect control, and otherwise work extremely well...

Anyway, has anyone else been playing this game?

I think this game series often gets misunderstood because some people just don't "Get it" which is fair enough, but for me it's the game of the year, and yes I've played half life 2 ^_^'
Something I like about this game (Half life 2 the same kinda in this respect but in different elements) is the attention to detail, you see something that the Konami team actually bothered to programme in and you smile to yourself, the overall quality of the game is superb.
The storyline of course is top notch better than most films I've seen this year as well. Don't wanna mention too much cause of the spoiler issue but the game is rammed full of innovation and in my opinion a definite improvement over 2.

It's funny how many people don't realise the sneak walk is on the d-pad, and keep wondering why they're getting caught. I agree once you get used to it it's easy, mastering Cqc is so satisfying, it's all about that Goro Daimon throw!

(Oh and them earlier spoilers wern't exactly correct, they were partly early conjecture taken from some solid facts pre game release).

I think a lot of people love the game. The game does sell really well after all. I think that you are mistaken to suggest that the series' detractors don't "get it." I have finished Metal Gear on the NES, MGS on PS and MGS2 on PS2. I think that I grasp the games' mechanics, message, philosophy, story, attitude, or whatever else one might "get" from a video game.

I do not think the series is bad, but I think that it is very overrated and yes, it is kind of a game slapped into a movie. The game part is not so bad. The movie, however, is pretty bad IMO. I love good stories in movies and books. I would be happy if game stories got to be really great, but I am not holding my breath.

MGS2's story was so long-winded and convoluted that at some point in the last harrowing hours of MGS2 storytime, I promised myself I would never play another MG game. Time has passd and I am considering renting MGS3 some weekend. If this game is not twice as good as MGS2 I will be disappointed.

I am rambling here, but I think that MGS typifies what annoys me most about games today- the shift away from innovative design and gameplay and toward style, story and presentation. Yes, these games attract a broader audience who might not be that into video games, but they often fail to satisfy, uh, me.

I can't think of another game that does what the MGS series does in it's own way... especially in terms of innovative gameplay and design.

MGS 1 was really one of the first popular games based on stealth EVER... at least on a console... it was simple and at times very unrealistic (cardboard box invisibility), but it was revolutionary in that you had all these gadgets to work with, and your goal throughout the game was to remain as unseen as possible. Add the combat elements and the innovative boss battles, and you have a very innovative game for its time.

MGS2 brought the power of the PS2. Obviously this meant better graphics, but this also continued the evolution of the gameplay. Pressure sensitive buttons allowed you to hold up your foes, sneak up on people quietly and quickly, and crack your enemies neck faster. New combat mechanics allowed popping in and out of cover, which looks more like real combat than strafing around anyway. There were a ton of improvements. However, I will be the first to admit that the cutscenes were WAY too long in some parts, the story was convoluted and hard to understand, and the games resolution was fuzzy. However, after speculation, research and study, I was able to understand the ending better... It's unfortunate that it is often too complex for it's own good...

MGS3 solves that problem completely. I'm about halfway through the game (I think), and during the beginning, there were some relatively long cutscenes... but once you get past a certain point, I was surprised and amazed that the amount of cutscenes, codec calls, and other interruptions, were basically reduced to almost nothing! Only when you get past certain large stretches of area, and accomplish a goal that puts you a step closer to your final mission completion, will there be a cutcene to reward you. I was very impressed, (kind of shocked really), because I didn't expect to not be contacted in such a long period of time. You can always call your people for information, advice, etc. But they almost NEVER call you, unless your in a bind, or it's a story part.

I explained the gameplay mechanics in my last, overblown post, so I'll just say that if you manage to rent MGS3, I think your expectations will be blown away. It's a hell of a lot better than 2, and I really liked 2. Kojima really outdid himself with this game... and even as it is movie like, it tells a story that could only be told through a game. I especially like the parts where you have control of the camera in the cutscenes, and you can change the angle to suit you better... you guys know what I'm talking about...

Blurring the lines between a game and a movie doesn't just mean inserting cutscenes into a game ad nauseum. It does mean integrating them into the gameplay, giving the player as much freedom and choice as possible, and hopefully some day, eliminating the need for cutscenes all together... once AI gets good enough (HL2 is coming close), we can start having games that change their story to suit the players actions, where 'cutscenes' will unfold as part of gameplay, and the player has full interactivity... where the AI will respond to the players actions...the future is good for games =)

Don't force yourself to play the game if it's not your "cup of tea" so to speak, there are thousands of games out there to suit people's personal taste. Just because it's a popular game dons't mean you have to like it.
What I mean by not “getting it†is the game play mechanics, working out an area, guard patterns different routes to tackle areas, fastest ways, experimenting with equipment etc etc, because many people try running through like it’s some sort of shoot em up which is the wrong way to play this game/genre.
The thing with this game/genre is that it can be slow paced because it's predominantly a stealth game. The way it’s perhaps marketed it may come across to others as a kind of Rambo gung ho type affair.
In my opinion though it does it's job well, draws you into the environment they created, make you feel your there while creating a rich storyline alongside it,
now we can argue the merits of lack of for the storyline but that's just personal preference, I'm personally not expecting Citizen Kane from a game.
If you look at Kojima's earlier works, Snatcher, Policenauts, interactivity was sort of slapped on, kind of like interactive novels, the more he's progressed though the more he seems to be able to blend these genres together (Story telling and games playing).
I know it’s far from perfect cut scenes can be too long, controls frustrating for the uninitiated etc but as long as you approach this game right you can’t help but be entertained and at the end of the day that’s what counts.

If only kojima would spend as much time as he does on mgs3 on his other games to get them looking half as goodas mg. Please dont think mg series is some new inovtive shit cause it really isnt hes simply looked at a few hollywood films and riped them off.

Remi I'm talking about innovation in the gameplay not cutscenes, which I think are good anyway.
What would you know anyways you probably haven’t even played the game, or if you have not enough to put in decent criticism /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif (Know it's easy to hate on mainstream things that are popular)
Yeah Hollywood films require you to change camo, hunt and eat food, use various strategies on bosses /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif

    Re: (Sigh)

Nope hollywood films dont require u to do that but many others games do, Also i cant imagine where they came up with some of there ideas for metal gear.............. oh wait i know i seem to remember a film called Escape from La with Kurt russel its real funny how him and snake have exactly the same character. Inovation orignality my backside i dont hate mainstream games but what i hate is when people think it's some brand new idea or concept. i guess cause he in the jungle now it's all new and shit fuck that man now he's trying to be rambo. Anyway i shouldnt come in this thread and ruin you conversation about mgs3 probably is a good game just lacking any actual new ideas.

    Re: (Sigh)

Yeah, story-wise, and many other elements are not exactly original ideas. Kojima have said on many occasions where he got his ideas from. The main draw of MGS however, is the innovative use of these borrowed ideas. There are many many little things that just makes you smile while you are playing the game. To tell you exactly what they are will just ruin the surprise for you. It just makes you feel thankful for kojima for making a game that contains so many things that you never knew you wanted in a game. It's a game made by otakus for otakus, and that is a very special thing to come by nowadays in the game industry.
