I have been saying this since the game has been released on PS3 about 2-3 hours after owning it and playing with Denkai.... Normal hit / Counter hit??? There both the same if you ask me, give or take this slightly differs depending on the character who hit or got hit. In all my years of playing VF, I still can't figure out what they did to the system to make it feel this way.

TRUE INDEED!!! Instincts,Experience and Know how. The first thing a rookie should do is examine his battles cuz that whats replays are for. Its always a plus to go into Dojo using a character that gives you the most trouble and study his movelist.I did this to Lei Fei and many others by setting the computer to /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif after /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif to see whats moves was and practice Fuzzy guarding. I guess its important to know frame but a Guarded high risk manuever is punishable without even having to know frames. That shit should be evident.

They had a Counter system in VF since part 2. You ask why they did this? To Punish players for getting beat to the punch. Obviously you won't notice this with a Akira since he is a one hitter quitter.
Tekken and DOA got this from VF2. This question should not be coming from you SMDH!!!!

so you dont have to beat 5 masters in a row to rank up from Masters? you can also rank up from Masters from 10th Dans? if so that is sweet then.

you can't rank up from beating masters. You have to beat 5 10ths in a row, the only way, your only chance. but every 10th dan is a demotion match. By the way, if you blow right past master I hate you, lol, jk.

You miss understood me. I am quite aware that there has been a counter system in VF since VF2. The point I was attempting to get across is that it's been somehow tweaked and for some characters in a lot of cases it makes no difference what kind of hit you landed or defended, because many chars have the proper tools to deal with either. Whether it's an 11 frame punch or an evasive move. Sure I fully understand that that's character design also and that's where knowledge comes into place, but if you test some things with the exact same timing every single time even those results come out with random results. Take Akira's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif. If the last part hits Akira has 4 frame advantage so if I buffer just SD( /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif) not even SDE(/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif) it should come out in 10 frames. It should beat pretty much any move a character throws out even at the fastest timing give or take a few chars who have evasive moves like I stated before that they can use that to get away. On many occasions SD gets beat by /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif strings which are coming out at 11 or 12 frames. Sometimes I have even lost to characters elbows which are coming at 14-16 frames. And don't say this is a online thing and it's lag, because it happens offline too. Sometimes it will work and sometimes it won't. It's because of this I say it makes no difference whether it's counter hit or not. I guess maybe because hit boxes are weird or something I don't know. But I have even trying replacing SD with /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d_.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif which would come out at 9 frames and still it's random results. The results are better but it's still random and I would rather not use /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d_.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif on a consist basis as all it takes is one dodge and you literally can wait a full minute before deciding which move you would like to ram up Akira's ass. I guess I am doing something wrong in terms of buffering!

And what does SMDH mean? You lost me on that one.

    lol

I think you may have found your answer.
Some characters, it don't even matter if I try to elbow them at +5, their while rising "uppercut" style moves blow right through that shit for example. Talk about scary, with no sabaki? Gotta evade at your own +5 in order to punish those moves.

This thread is getting pretty broad, but I like it! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Is it just me or has there been an influx of high level rank players online?

Wow - I am starting to come back finally. Thanks to a little of Dre's help last night and some Japanese players this morning I am back to Barbarian. It should be said however that Dre started making a huge comeback before we stopped playing. I was actually close to Assassin but mitojac, the guy who I ranked up from, started kicking my ass back real hard. Now I'm about mid level again.

As far as what's been said recently about knowledge of the game and such, I couldn't agree more with Masa and Konjou. I'm not sure if anyone's interested in my two cents but I believe experience is everything. Like the phrase goes, "with age comes wisdom."

For me, whether it's Street Fighter or VF, yes I'm good at video games but I'm nowhere near the best (not even close), but I do very well because of being tenacious, trying to read my opponent (not spamming), and believe it or not being creative and not caring so much about the outcome does pretty well for me. My style could be described as "belligerent." @Masa - is this called "abare" in Japanese?

With that said it somewhat goes along with the idea of me not using frame data so much. I do know it to an extent, but it's more of a feeling than immediate knowledge. I know there are a lot of high level players that are similar in this area. Even SHU says "I don't know frame data too much, I just know (or feel) what will work and what won't." Obviously this cannot be taught and must be experienced through a ton of gameplay.

That reminds me, congrats to Boyd (Air Jacky) on getting to 10th Dan. You should've been there awhile ago but nevertheless Boyd's experience with the VF series is why he's there. He would agree that while he may not be top tier (although very close), his vast history with the game is what keeps him on top. Same with me.

It amazes me however that people that have only recently picked up this game do so well. I think Denkai said he started playing with VF4FT. If this is true his skills are amazing, granted though he's been able to play top tier players. This helps immensely!

I'm pretty sure it's about me. I heard Denkai started with VF3.

Anyway, please keep that rank and we should play someday.

oh, and I just want to tell everybudy that I won't able to play VF for a while, so if you see None Other tag, it must be my friend.

Exactly what I am talking about. Why should you have to give up your advantage? It's called an advantage for a reason and I find this happens way to many times with VF5. Just as Slide said I find myself having to evade or just say fuck it and give up my advantage because I know these while rising uppercut moves or random should rams from Goh is coming. At +5 you should be able to stuff anything they do unless it's evasive like say Shun's low kick or Goh's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/u.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif. Well if it's hit boxes then I hope this issue is heavily addressed in R.

I don't think that "belligerent" is the right term to represent "abare" in Japanese. "abare" players are generally referred to those who tend to choose to attack rather than to block or evade in frame-wise disadvantageous situations. "abare" is also used to refer to people who can't do hit detection. I was called "abare" by my VF friends when I played VF in Japan /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif I guess most Shun players can be categorised as "abare" guys /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Last i checked Goh is Pretty Linear (With the excepton of his roundhouse.)he too can be punished of of evade just like Akira. What make Goh Formidable is that he can Can break you down pretty easily at the start of the round and can bridge gaps with powerful throw and holds. While you fear the Evading Tactics im quite sure you can use a delay attack or a Basic throw since almost all understanding players input throw escape for Advance/high powered throws during evade. For once you cannot guard all 4 options at the same time.

@JHow77 - It really does'nt matter when you started because After VF3 game mechanics Flipped completely.

I tend to agree with that but only partially. The game mechanics definitely changed, but one can still do very well using old school tactics. A good example would be if I use Jacky. I stopped playing him in VF4 and he completely changed in EVO. Because of this when I use him I revert back to VF2 and VF3 days and do very well with him still.

Even though the game has changed there are still many rudimentary skills that can be applied that have been around since VF2. And I'm not saying I'm better than anyone just because I've played that long. But I'm a firm believer in the more you play, the better you are.

Naruhodo! I kind of thought that was the case. I would definitely apply abare to Shun. His style just seems to fit that. I know Konjou and others have commented about this characteristic in Shun as well.

My style is definitely abare plus a little of what I mentioned earlier - not entirely caring about the outcome of the situation. Obviously this has its downfalls but usually makes for an amusing match. And I do in fact catch myself doing this a little too much once in awhile but I can't seem to help it. This is my weakness. I will also say that my defensive skills have seemed to suffer since my infatuation with Shun. If I could just polish those up a little...

Without a doubt im a firm believer in the more you play the better you are. That why i got this far without bending my brain to study frame data all the time. All that calculation to figure pluses and minuses on advantage urks me because i never like math much lol!. Learnin the exact number of frames is great but a person with common sense should be able to tell which high risk moves are what period. Anybody really interested in learning virtua and started on 5 should spend more hours in the Dojo before going online to learn the nuances.
