    Well, grats, but I can't. Not unless I mutate my left hand.

    I got my stick for the same reason. It does have more accurate directional input. I tried akira's moves and I could do pretty much all of them even though I couldn't on the pad.

    However, I had to get used to the different /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif button layouts which has been a bit harder. So moving from a pad to a stick has pros and cons at least in my experience.
    stick->improved directional input
    pad->easier attack buttons

    ^ I don't get how using 7 buttons for a 3 button game is easier?!

    & Seidon chill about the pad stuff, I know from experience that a lot of stuff is tough on pad. I can post a ton of stuff that I know for sure is almost impossible to consistently pull in a match, especially on reaction. Being able to pull stuff in dojo or rarely in a match doesn't count /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

    Well 7 buttons that are conformed to your hand and are in familiar positions and don't require multiple button inputs is a bit easier. I guess I should say that stick buttons aren't intrinsically harder to use but if you're used to the pad where pulling off multiple button inputs is done with 1 button. Then it takes a bit of getting used to. Yes 3 buttons is less than 7 buttons but now you actually have to move multiple fingers at the same time. Its taking me time to get to used to the coordination. I can do them but its not as easy to consistently pull off a two or three button input yet. I'm sure I'll get there eventually but I've only had my arcade stick less than a week.

    He said he was like me and hadn't used a stick much before so I figure he'll probably go through the same process.

    One funny thing about the whole pad debate is that I truly believe that sticks are better,

    But when people say that HALO woul dbe better with keyboard and mice, I cannot help but think "Geek!!"

    I guess thats how my wife sees me lol!

    Anyway, once you learn use one stick, then you will be used to it even for other games, so it's quite convenient!

    Matt mouse and keyboard really is better for FPS games, aiming and moving is so much easier and faster!

    HAHAHAHA exactly what I thought after reading your response earlier XD

    But yeah, thanks a lot for the tips, from you and Hath over there =) Hath's experience is probably being similar to what mine will be. I always thought that arcade stick just reduced the learning curves of a game, but it seems true that, at some point, it just becomes virtually impossible to do it better on pad. Oh well =) It'll be fun practicing the way of the stick!

    I struggle to use a pad when I play 2D fighters.

    I can't play a stick for 3D fighters. It's just not cricket.

    I'm the exact opposite. Hopefully though, I will start playing all fighters on the stick.

    Just drop the subject please. Youre not going to be able to prove anything. I know for a fact that one can do just anything with pad (I was beaten in VF4e finnish tourneys several times running by a padplayer). Whether it is meaningful is another matter. I also think playing pad is not ergonomic, and your hands will suffer from it. (I know a player whos had trouble with his hands, a Guiltygear padplayer) You wont be able to participate in japanese tournaments or other tournaments with controller restrictions.

    No matter how impossible something may seem, theres always somebody crazy who will show that it can be done. Go check VF4e disk videos about the guy who did Akiras combos with one hand.

    I just like touting it, it's just about all I have.

    Aside from my great taste in avatars. Obviously.

    So yesterday I went to the local arcades to see how my skills would fare on a stick. Aside from the lack of a good machine to practice (the newest game they had besides KoF 2004 was Street Fighter 3: 2nd Impact. Not even 3rd Strike, VF5 or CvS. The newest Tekken was Tekken 3) I felt like I didn't do too bad after all. I managed to do everything I do in a d-pad, and sometimes a bit faster too. However, I had a big problem with the buttons. I played 2nd Impact and it was a bitch to move around the 6 buttons, had my three fingers on the punch ones, and my thumb on the weak Kick. Whenever I wanted to mix a fierce or medium kick, I would mess up. I felt like the stick was too close to the buttons as well, at least for the way I was holding it (full grab with the left hand). Oh yeah and the strong punch button wasn't working properly, I had to press about 3 times to get one punch out, so I never used it. Arcades in Brazil are such a mess..

    The stick was one of those American-type sticks, as well as the buttons layout.

    Anyways the purpose of this post is moreso I could ask any advice on how to shift my fingers around the buttons, what's a good way to practice, etc. For VF I won't have much trouble I guess (3 buttons yay), but for other games I will need to practice... a lot.

    I cannot use my thumb for a button for the life of me when using a stick, so at least on a 6-button layout I use index/middle/ring for the buttons then just shift down quickly if I need to use kicks. For stuff like 3S needing LP+LK or MP+MK I either flatten that finger to hit both (takes a bit of practice) or turn my hand really quick and use index/middle for the buttons I need to hit.
