    B&W here too.

Though I don't see how changing the colour can soften the rating?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Because according to MPAA weird cencor laws it's ok to show blood... aslong as it's not red.

yeah.. i'm pretty sure that Gordon Liu is a huge influence on Lei Fei's design. Lei Fei does G.Liu's moves, like Jacky does B.Lee's signature moves. G.Liu's is supposed to be in the next volume as well, but as a diff character.

btw, i don't think it was mentioned either, but the guy that played Hanzo, he's a really big Japanese actor- he's been in like half the Japanese films that I've seen him in... and he's a true practioner of a number of traditional Japanese martial arts, and a model that Capcom used when creating Omnimusha... oh, and he appears in the The Battle Royale II. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Is this film out yet? If it is, I would definetly try to see it. The first film was a blast. Would Sonny Chiba replace Beat Takeshi's character?

BTW, Sonny Chiba's(Hanzo) claim to fame were the "Street Fighter" film series. I think he would have gave Bruce Lee a run for his money.

Here is a site with links to movies with Gordon Liu and Sonny Chiba and other references to Kill Bill

To clarify, Sonny Chiba, the actor playing Hanzo in Kill Bill vol 1, is a well known and very much respected Japanese actor with a prolific filmography.

i saw it today, it was cool, not as great as i thought it would be, but the girl from battle royale kicked ass..

lots of blood, and the anime was pretty cool.. needs to be smoother tho.

sup people, just got back from seeing kill bill, films amazing probably up there as one of tarantino's best(well i guess we will have to see the rest of it first).

Does anybody know the actual body count for the film, it must be up there in the hundreds somewhere.

Regarding praise for QT... The reason I personally love his movies so much is because they always give me stuff to return to.

In his "official" first 3 directed films (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jacky Brown) the dialogue/script alone were worth going back to those movies for me. I simply love the way he constructed dialogue in those films and how the actors/actresses realized them. The little details were always worth coming back to as well. Not to mention the way scenes referenced each other so more context was given to you on a second viewing, sometimes even more viewings.

As far as Kill Bill goes, the movie was sort of an enthusiastic film that I enjoyed for many reasons including a shared enthusiasm that I had for the material. I could go back and rewatch that movie times over for the little references, inside jokes, self-poking (referencing his own films), and scene referencing. Sure, the trademark dialogue isn't there like before (though it's corny edge is), but I felt like I was sharing nostalgic moments with Tarantino from other films, almost conversing "buddy moments", and yet enjoying the action and energy of the film itself.

On a "Friday Night Flick" level, I enjoyed the pure energy, action, and humor of the film. On a film-nut level, the stuff I said above.

While I'm on the topic, is there a fine line between tribute and ripoff? I've heard a lot of people either praise QT for the tributes or accuse him of ripping off. I mean, without getting into the legalities of copyright, etc, where do you draw the line?

    [/ QUOTE ]

It's a very fuzzy line, and I imagine one that depends on who draws it. (Vague as usual Chanchai)

In the case of Tarantino and his films, I consider his references and allusions to be tributes because it's clear to me that he prized a lot of the films that are credited as holders of the material in question. Within the films themselves, I personally sense a sort of idolization of the era in which much of the ripped-off/tribute material is from. Mostly, but not entirely, nostalgic and energetic love for the films and music of the 70's.

Watching and reading interviews with Tarantino it's clear to me that he loved the films that inspired scenes, themes, and chapters of his films. He seems to enjoy talking about other directors a bit more than talking about himself and his love for the films he's made--which is a ton of enjoyment (given that he loves to talk a lot about his movies, the guy seems to be able to talk more than I do). And he will indicate his inspirations for certain characters or scenes a good amount.

IMO, the material he's ripped-off or put for tribute has been implemented well in a way that may even seem fresh, without completely lying about its origin (it's blatantly recognizable in most cases, while still putting some spin on it under the context). Sometimes poking fun, sometimes squeezed in, sometimes orchestrated--but that it's recognized and still entertaining is a positive note for me, and in that regard is a tribute. If it was boring and seemed thrown in with no redeeming qualities--I'd call it a ripoff.

If you think he's made an entertaining film that you've liked, and you recognize the references with a positive response--call it a tribute. If you think his ego is completely undeserved and his film is a mere shadow of various films of the past--call it a ripoff.

But it's not like we can call every film that points the camera to the sun (especially from a forest) a ripoff of Rashomon. Then again, people have accused Lucas and Spielberg of being blatant ripoff artists and pirates. And I don't think I could ever really deny that completely. Guess that line is still always kinda fuzzy.

    But I think:
    1) If it's structured to be recognizable and clear enough
    2) there's a way of showing the subject's intent of appreciation of the source material (Tarantino's appreciation/obsession/love of the "original" films, novels, or music)
    3) it serves a positive purpose (mainly within the audience) like enjoyment

Then under those 3 criteria, it's a tribute to me. Guess you can say that's where I draw the line.

    -Chanchai

P.S. What Chanchai does consider a ripoff: Majority of Hollywood action films in the last few years throwing in (with no redeeming qualities) the effects that looked uniquely good in The Matrix (not talking about wire-fu). It's become something boringly generic to me--and you think they could put quite a bit more effort into it if they were trying to actually pay respect and make it look good, as opposed to tossed in.
