I mentioned this to some on IRC but forgot to relay it here. I already have messages being output to the console (you just can't see them now) telling you what frame your input failed at. What I'm working on right now is the following:

    - a bemani-style graphical meter to show you how to time your presses (toggle on/off).
    - a slow-mo feature, kinda like ps2 training mode (currently having problems with this though since the video can playback slowly but the audio still plays at normal speed).
    - a show-me feature where it can play the entire track once so you know what it looks like in full (helpful for first time users I guess)
    - and just for fun, a score which tracks how many times you complete it successfully, and highest win streak! (my record is 5 straight so far)

I'm learning different features of flash as I go, so don't hold your breath on all of these features making it through.

Also, I'd be interested to hear if the trainer actually helps anyone's real game.

    high schore list!!

5 in a row mutha truckas

i think a little bar that shows u how close ur inputs are would be bad.... seems like you'd be looking at that rather than kage. Not sure how easy it is to amke it togglable and whatnot... o well

    very nice stuff myke

Siyko, I know what you mean. There's a bit of negative training involved when you include too much help. Like you said, the player would get too used to it. Practicing it the way it is now is pretty much how you would practice it in the arcade -- good old fashioned trial and error.

But still, a little bit of help can't hurt too much. Maybe I'll only allow the scoring feature when all help aids are turned off.

Audioclue would be the best addition imo. Beeps that show you the correct tempo for everything that's played when you fail to do the combo which you try to copy.

New update. There's now a status box describing your failed inputs:

    - Too Early (x frames)
    - Too Late

Great idea, but it's extremely disheartening 5 times in a row to get "too early - 1 frame" on the last hit.

vanity, well at least you know why you're failing.

Anyway, another minor update: changed the first DP input to P+K (i.e. J+K)

Great change--I was actually pressing J+K for the first DP before to keep it as real as possible. Would you consider making another slight modification? Instead of "R" to restart, what about "N" or a key in reach of your right hand?

The reason is that when I take boring phone calls, eat a sandwich, etc. with my left hand I like to hishoukyaku with my right hand, and needing to reach across to R makes it slightly cumbersome.

Yeah, good idea. OK I've changed the Restart key to "I".

Anyway, just had a night of FTing, and my accuracy on the 4th hit has definitely improved. The training has, at the very least, made me more comfortable with the timing.

    Nice work Myke!!

Sorry to be a pain, but do you know if there's a link/possibility to save the flash movie? I'm on 56K still and it's going to be a pain to wait 20-30 mins to load the combo trainer /versus/images/graemlins/frown.gif

    Hey Myke,

Thanks for the updates, they are great! The early/late feedback definitely helps... I'm getting really good at making it through the trainer, but still having problems in the arcade... I'll let you know if I make any further improvements...

    Another update.

Astute readers would have noticed that on the site 1/60sec, there are two possible input timings depending on when you enter the first [P]. The window for the first [P] is 4 frames, and if you enter it on the last (4th) frame, then the remaining inputs need to be delayed by 1 frame.

I had originally programmed it based on the non-delay timing, that is, the first [P] only had a window of 3 frames. But, now the first input window is 4 frames and the timing of the rest of the combo will vary accordingly.

    Supergolden: good luck!
    Renzo: I'm flattered /versus/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

As it odd as it might sound, I have to say that completing the DPC in the arcade is significantly easier than using Myke's trainer. I'm sure why this is the case, but I can get the whole combo decently enough during matches but I have never had more than 2 hits using the trainer. Completing 3 hits in the arcade, there's more than a couple of us at 95%+ in the arcade. Go figure :p

Whoa, the trainer really does work!

I practiced for a little while on the trainer last week, but it wasn't until the weekend I got to try it out in the arcade. To my surprise, I was hitting the combo almost everytime!

For me, it seems easier to pull it off in the arcade than on my keyboard at home. No big deal though. Before the trainer, I would have trouble getting the last hit in, but now I usually mess up going from the 2nd to 3rd hit. However, if I get the 3rd hit in, the 4th almost always comes out.

Thanks again for the cool app Myke!
