I'll be there, as usual. I have to keep training my prodigy: Wild Willy.

remember Willy: "below the courageous, there is nothing". These are the words of Hokage. NO MACHI!

Also, neobuyer is a new recruit through friendster!

cool bryan ill let you handle neobuyer and ill pm you Erics number the vf3 style akira player, maybe they can set stuff up on rides. LPC !!, how much more info do you need to know.

We can supply 3 tvs and 2 ps2, and a meager 3 joysticks, ill see if i can convince sean to fix his other joystick so we can atleast get 2 setups running till someone can bring more equipment. Talis we need your equipment!!, we're not worthy without it!! Also Seans new place is completely out of the question now, its too small with too many roomates. We need to find a new VF home !!!

sorry for passing out the other night, but after getting no sleep the night before, class at 10am, and then getting drugged by the dentist, i wasnt gonna last long.

anyhow since i basically missed a meet, time for intensive single player training . . . maybe learn a new dance while im at it. I think Eric might be willing to host the next meet, unless someone else wants to do it as a sure thing. . .

    3 weeks till the tournament . . . IKUZO!!

If Eric doesn't want to host it, I can do it at the Tattoo Shop.

When did everyone (Andy, Willy, Eric withstanding) in Socal get so into machi play (backdashing a ton, waiting etc)?

"everything is machi relative to your style of play"

while I can see your point, this isn't really true. Think about the people we played with at Evo: Ohsu, Chibita, Myke, NeoTower, Ryan, Mad Dog, Kofu etc, none of these guys could be called a machi or waiting fighter in any sense. And while I think that a little backdashing with a set-up or some yomi in mind is cool (IE "I think my opp'ts gonna low P, so I'll do a little backdash into a mid attack"); I think mindless backing up, or backing up to avoid a tough situation is a bad habit. You're basically just avoiding a situation, and missing a chance to come out on top.

For example, if you backdash or wait at long range to avoid attacks like the DblPm, you aren't really guaranteed anything if it whiffs (depending on range). However, if you're down to Yomi a DblPm, and Guard it or Dodge, you're in an excellent position to deal GUARANTEED damage. I can't do Dodge-Bodycheck for 80-90 points from 2 backdashes away. You can't Throw, you can't Dodge, Minor Counter, Sabaki, most of your Attacks probably aren't in range... you're negating most of the dialogue that can take place between the players.

Of course, some characters are made to function better at Mid-Long range (Kage, Lei), and some people can mix staying just out of range at times with heavy offense very well (Joey, Hat Brian). But, I've noticed that I've been hitting people into walls and getting a lot of RO's merely because people are backing up. Also, I've seen people miss combos or advantageous situations becuase as soon as the "starter" move has worked, they're already tapping in that reflexive backdash.

Everyone should play how they want and have fun. But, I've been thinking about it for a few weeks, and I KNOW you guys will get stronger faster if you learn to fight close a little more. It's not even like anyone's playing really true, hardcore machi (although Sean is getting close /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif). But, look at Andy, he's breaking about 30% of my throws, nailing me with a big variety of moves, finishing all his combos, and he can break even against me with about 8 characters, while I focus on one. He does it without waiting or heavy backdashing, and absolutely no patterns, it's all on the fly thinking. He's able to guess correctly in Nitaku type situations, and capatalize with big damage combos and throws. All this makes Andy the most fun person in Socal to play with, I think most will agree.

I just wanna see everyone improve as fast as possible. And, to be honest, hardcore Machi play is REALLY boring, people just end up using the same small handfull moves over and over because "it works, dude". But video games are supposed to be fun, and I'd rather loose all day to a player that's really fighting in my face and impressing me (that I can learn from) than win to a boring player anytime.

"Machi doesn't exist..............................It is all in the mind of the loser..."

who said I was loosing, Adam? Oops, it's Mike, right? /versus/images/graemlins/cool.gif

BTW rikyu is also non-machi... anyone else see him beat Joey last week?

I wanted to add that I think that machi-style playing is what newer players adopt when playing people of significantly higher level. It feels better to try and make so room so that you can think, because at this point, not everything is instinctive, and it might be the only way you can win. For instance, when I first played VF4 with Bryan(spotlite) here at UCLA he used to beat me 20 times in a row -- at 50 cents a pop! The only way I could beat him was to back up and sidekick as he came in, and then do low-punch-throw whenever he got close. At one point, Bryan said to me, "Do you always back up in fighting games? I don't think it's cheap, but it's more fun when you fight close." I replied that I wasn't really even aware that I was doing it. I think I was just trying to give myself some space and time to figure out how to beat this guy and what moves I had at my disposal, without realizing that I was backdashing at every opportunity I had. A much better player than me said the same sort of thing when playing TTT, and again, I never thought of myself as a turtler. Even when I started playing Vanessa, I think I played a little machi because I couldn't sort out what moves she had.

You new guys can more than stand your own with us old guys (27+:p), and your instincts for your primary characters should be well-established. Now, it seems that machi style has become instinctive for some of you. Don't think that Bryan and I are saying, "You guys have to play like us!" All of the Japanese players Bryan mentioned have a distinct style, without excessive backdashing. Also, I think that we both have started to notice bad patterns that comes from using a style that seems to "work." And, I think that playing more in-your-face is more fun, with matches that are faster paced and more hectic and have a greater variety of moves.

I guess it comes down to this: when one player is more aggressive and one more machi, the game is less satisfying for the aggressor, having to always chase after the machi player and run into moves just as a result of chasing. If both choose to play machi, well, we've all seen how boring those matches are.

It's true that Bryan loves to dbl-palm out of a tech-roll (mixed up with a dodge-possible bodycheck). Don't run away - MC him - use circular moves and delayed moves to cover your bases.

Despite everything above, I think I can speak for Bryan when I say that it's very exciting to see how big the SoCal-Los Angeles scene has become. It's great to have a number of players at a competitive level.

yeah, Andy was able to sum up how I feel pretty well.

Just focus on Andy's avitar, and imagine Andy is the nurturing father figure, holding you, saying, "don't run away... put your fist forward and fight, my child... I love you".

Let me speak about the socal scene...about a year and a half ago it started.

I am glad that I met Bryan and Cameron that one night at Arcade Infinity. Which was basically the start of the Socal Group. Funny thing is that they were running late and I was just about leave ,but I decided to go back into AI and there they were.
I was amazed by Bryan's and Cameron's skill level. I was just a scrub that played one human VF opponent ever. At that time Kage was my main character. (yes I know hard to believe). Wolfie was second... Anyways had a great session and continued the meets at A.I. next was David VFA. ..Then came Talis, Catherine, and David brought his friend Mike. Bryan brought Andy and the Chandler (Jacky) showed up...and taught us so much.
I knew I was starting to get better because there was no way a scrub could mash buttons and beat me. Then there was the E3 tourney at Bryans house... I guess you can think of it as a precursor tp EVo2k3.
After Chandler left the scene slowed down. Then came Joey...soon after that Alex appeared. Who also brought people he knew into the mix (Willy,Sean,Hat). Next was Wes...he added Joon
During this time some people have come and gone , but we still remained true and probably had the first VF Socal tourney ever... the Infinity Cup. Which I think went very well.
Next came Texas...even though I lost a few years of my leg power on that trip...but I must say it was very fun.
Now we are on the verge of something special. Especially after EVO2k3.
I am glad that I have become a much better VF player
since I joined this group, but more than anything I am proud to consider you guys and girls my Friends. I feel very lucky to have known everyone.
