I should be able to make it next Friday, and I believe Bryan will try as well. I'll check on Joey, although I think he might be in Taiwan that week.

Everybody needs to bring sticks because 2 of Bryan's are down.

Oh and Alex, could you bring TTT (and DOA2)?

Who's gonna be there? Well, in the past we've had Spotlite, Andy, Joey, Mike90210, vf4akira (seriously, YOU come to our place - flights are cheap from Japan, right?)

    [/ QUOTE ]

Sounds like it'll be an awesome gathering. I wish I could go. However, by the same token, YOU can come to my place. /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif It's cheaper to fly to Japan from there than for me to fly to the US. Hell, I even invited everybody to my place a few posts above! What more do I need to do!? /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Seriously, if any of my SoCal homies actually wanted to come here, you can stay at my house.

Anyway have fun at the gathering.

This is shaping up to be a kick ass gathering. Glad people are responding.

As far as equipment is concerned, it's always better to bring all you can. We may not use everything, but if we need, say, a TV - it's better to have it out front in your car than back at your place. More setups mean more VF for everyone.

On a different note, can anyone get a hold of Weslyzm or Joon? I forgot them on my original list of players a few posts back and I don't know how often they check the boards.

No one ever hassled me for being a newb. But then again, I was quick to talk shit in both directions - against me and against whoever was fighting against me (Alex and his cheese-ass Goh tactics). But yeah, nice guys...and they like to whip the caracas out of new guys - it gives them a chance to try new techniques and experimental combos that others would block (didn't Andy somehow hit me with a 80% Shun combo?)!

I'm probably in-to-win for the 13th - though it's some chick's birthday and she invited me to her party. But VF usually supercedes women.

So...maaaaaaybe I'll be there. I got an RF switch...a US VF4Evo disc...and nothing else. I got my ghetto PS2 that I bought for $25, but it glitches pretty consistantly. I got a few other games if anyone needs a break from VF4 though /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

    Rock on y'all.

I wish someday someone would explain to me what "CHEAP" is. Or how my playstyle is "AGGRAVATING". Anyone care to explain? because cheap is such a general word especially in the world of VF /versus/images/graemlins/confused.gif

When you beat LPC73 in a game, you are automatically classified CHEAP (at least by him /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

Hi guys, just want to know what button configuration ya'll have on your sticks so I can make sure I'm using mine the same way. I currently have the left most 3 buttons as guard, punch, kick , respectively. The right most buttons I don't use.

sgtsmurf: on what type of controller/stick are you talking about?

alex: I can't really remember what "cheap" tactics you've done since it's been a while since I've last played you

(I can only call it "cheap" cuz I don't really remember what it was...not that I think it's cheap)

I only remember a lot of delaying moves and back stagger setups...try to remember more in future

Re: It's time to play in SoCal

    Alex:

when I call you "cheap", this is what I mean:

Nothing you do with your characters is unfair, and you don't exploit any kind of flaw or bug in the game. You also can't be accused of using only non-counterable or "safe" moves. If something happens in a match between us and I get annoyed (like last week when you avoided my dodge-bodycheck by doing Lei's ground-slap thing), that's just the game, and I'm more frustrated with the game's system than anything you're doing. When I say "cheap", I'm talking about your play style.

I think this comes from an old set of ethics that was pounded into my head during VF2, where things like Backdashing, KO'ing with a low kick, using a lot of PPP, or PP-throw etc were considered "Yasui", literally "cheap/inexpensive". Another way to think about this kind of play is to think about the idea of Risk and Return.

Medium Risk/Medium Return: an good example of this would be using Jacky's Middle Spin Kick to Tech Rollers. If it hits (which it ususally does), Jacky gets a decent bite off the life bar, not too much, but enough. If the oppt guards, Jacky's at Elbow Class counter-ability.

High Risk/High Return: oppt just guarded Jeffry's ff+P. Here, if the oppt is guarding, expecting the next canned P, Jeffry can Throw. Of course, if the oppt Yomi's Jeffry's throw, they can MC with a floater, and Jeffry's in trouble. So, Jefffry has to take this Risk, but if it works, he can nail a Splash Mountain for big damage: High Return. Basically, nailing a big move/throw when it isn't guaranteed, at all. Another good example is SPODing after a guarded SDE, or Brian Dragon Cannoning after getting mC P'd: looks super stylish, turns the flow of the fight, makes big damage, EXCITING! FUN! People say "Nice!"

High Risk/Medium-Low Return: the best example I can think of for this at the moment is the "Ohsu Finish", KO'ing with a Reversal. Whiffed Reversals leave you open to all types of Throws and Attacks, and they don't do much damage, so they aren't really worth the Risk (this is why most people don't even bother to use Vanessa, Akira, Kage, Wolf's Reversals). At "KO time", when both players have only a little life left, most people are throwing out Low Kicks, Low Ps, Ohsu Akira loves to finish with a Mid Reversal. This is pure Flash, just to show that he owns you. Best example is a recent BT tape where it's KO Time against AoPai, he guards Ohsu's bfP+K, goes for Pai's K, which no one ever does, maybe expecting a TE, or Shoulder...? POP- Reversed! Fucking HIGH reversal (NO ONE does HIGH ATTACKS after guarding Aki's bfP+K) KO! While it's totally un-economical, this is just fucking bad ass, and the mark of a true VF Ace: best damage is irrelevant, because I own you! Moments like this are the reason to play VF.

Cheap play is all about "Low Risk/High Return", IE when Brian has about 30-40 points of life left, and you use 3 sweeps in a row with Lei Fei. While it's true that sweeps are very counterable (if Brian guarded, he could make a Dragon Cannon), and you could say he's dumb for getting hit with the same move again and again, what's really going on is that you're just trying to kill him. You're using a move that is full circular, and brings Lei VERY low, so you're gonna beat any attempts to Throw/Dodge, and most Attacks will loose out to this ducking move.

So, at this point, you're not interested in having any kind of "fighting conversation" with Brian, you don't want to have to guess what he's gonna do, so you pull out the closest thing you can find to a kind of "perfect attack", the sweep. This is also complimented with a heavy dose of backdashing, further putting you out of range of most Attacks, and of course, Throws.

It's like you're willing to do ANYTHING to win, no matter how ugly it looks, no matter how un-fun it is for the oppt, no matter that it lacks style, no matter that it's kind of "chicken-ish". This play literally "cheapens" the experience of playing Virtua Fighter: it makes something that's supposed to be exciting, fun, and cool into something that's about winning and loosing.

Have you ever heard the expression "it's not whether you win or loose, it's how you play the game"? Most US VF players would dis-agree with this at this point, because they're obsessed with the idea of "who's the best in the US". But, I think if you play with a mind more towards having fun, you and all your friends will enjoy your life more. IMO, if a lot of people are complaining about the way you play, grumbling about Cheap, Aggrivating, something's wrong. If you go further into the Cheap, non-fun zone, you just care about winning, and people won't like playing VF with you. You may get respect "in public" for winning a tourney etc., but behind your back people will ALWAYS say you're boring and NO FUN! There are TONS of examples of this in the US. No one could EVER say that it's boring or not fun to play with Chibita, no matter how many times you loose! Something to think about.

Re: It's time to play in SoCal

I think this criticism has gone on long enough. I think we can all agree that Alex's playing style can get irritating , but that's still his style of playing. Everyone develops differently as a player. Alex worked just as hard as everyone else to get to the level of skill that he's at now. It pisses me off that I can't even get one game from him, but I'm not going to label him a cheater and accuse him of using cheap tactics. When this whole "cheese" thing started out, I thought it was a joke. But now I think it's gotten out of hand. Alex has a strong game... it's annoying, but it's still strong. With that said, lets close this topic.

P.S. thank you for not resorting to violence... like the tekken players.
