It's a lot worse than I described earlier, the issue the article was from is about a year old so it's difficult to remember a lot of what was said.

I've still got the issue, if you want I can find it out and scan the article or type it up and PM you.

Yeah sure if you can scan it don't put yourself out though man.

I can't imagine metacritic's really that detrimental to creative development though, as far as I see it's just a tool. Granted one that draws from some not exactly reputable sources but thus comes a true market value or whatever (total demographic overview?) dno lol.

Seems like most things written by Hilary Goldstein (still can't believe that's a guy's name?) are filled with controversy. And IGN probably love it, because it gets the masses all in a huff talking about the site. All this rage results in links to the article and many, many site visits.

If they created a list to please everyone, then you'd probably just nod your head and move on.

Anyways, I don't understand why Yie Ar Kung Fu was even considered as a "fighting game". I personally loved the game in the arcade when I was a kid, spending (too much of) my pocket playing the game at the local take-away shop. While I have many fond memories attached to the game, it's just ludicrous to compare it to the "fighting games" of today.

Still, it's probably a great game for younger children to have fun with.

I couldn't really let this pass. It's a really uninformed statement. High level DOA has plenty of depth and if you're distracted by the superficial elements of the presentation (the females), you're negatively biased as much as someone who plays it just because of that. Either way, you're missing the deeper gameplay.

If anything, VF could learn from DOA and SF about presenting the game better (story mode) so that casual players become more attached and have reasons to learn further.

I'd put DOA right behind VF on any good fighters list. As I said on DOACentral when someone downplayed VF in response to the same article:

we really shouldn't diss VF here, considering how closely related it is to DOA.

Likewise a couple of people on the VF board smirked at DOA, which is wrong as well.

Both games have excellent levels of depth and accessible, logical "string" based gameplay. VF5 could do more for presentation to help its beginner level accessibility and DOA could do more to make its potential for high level gameplay apparent, but either way these are tweaks and both are great games.

Both VF and DOA communities should be supportive of one another I think

I do not understand what logical "string" based gameplay means, would you mind elaborating please?

I'm not trying to be an ass, but among the current crop of 3D fighters, DoA has, by far, the most shallow gameplay among them. Granted, I've never been in a high-level DoA match, but I don't write off every game without giving it a go first. I tried DoA, read what could be read, watched the vids, and I still walked away thinking, no... knowing... that this game would have been largely ignored if Tekken / VF were not platform exclusives for so many years.

It's a bit like SSB - people who don't know any better are giving it praise beyond its means. It was designed for children, to be played by children.

DOA is a good game, until someone gets hit.

    I agree.

Both games (in their earlier editions) in a fundamental aspect are very similar.

This list is terrible. Just goes to show you that you can't spell ignorant without IGN.

As a former DoA player I can say that older iterations of DoA were actually pretty good. Not like VF good but definately playable, competitive, and fun.

DoA1/++ was good, DoA2 (original/arcade) was decent, and DoA3 was good.

Now the xbox iterations (excluding doa3) sucked imo but, DoA isn't a garbage fighting game like say bloody roar.

However, is it VF/Tekken like? Nope.

I guess if you exclude danger zones fundamentally, it is similar to vf1/2? Well maybe not vf2(senbon punching: yikes).

I don't mind the metacritic thing. I have never seen a game that I love get sh*t on. Plus it only makes sense for publishers to have some kind of system to go by when it comes to spending millions. These aren't the days where you can make a blockbuster with only 2 programmers.....except for XBLA.
