Please don't make petty excuses, it is apparent that you have no fucking clue about Half-Life, sir.

And it's obvious you have no fucking clue as to how the industry functions, with its superficial "awards" (Japan's CESA is the worst), "influenced" reviews (don't fool yourself into thinking all content is unbiased), and reviewers who are paid to pander to Timmy age 15 who buys the magazine instead of people who would like to take time and effort to fully understand a game as ART.

Half-Life was not marketed for 15 year olds, but oh it's not like you care.

Don't call the awards superficial, you have no clue about the awards at all obviously.

When several good games come out, one of them will earn awards over the other, it is just what is going to happen ultimately.

If Gran Turismo 3 wins best racing game, or Final Fantasy X wins best RPG, are the awards superficial? nah.

It is obvious that most people care about the awards, as the highest selling games usually win the awards, and the game developers always commentate back on 'why' then won the award(s) they did.

There is nothing superficial about an incredible game: Half-Life: winning hundreds of awards, despite large competition, not to mention that the game had massive expectations too. Most people know Half-Life as the "Game of the Year," there is probably a reason for that......

I've BEEN to an awards ceremony, actually. There's a very funny story me, Fishie, and Reno can recount to you as to how I was almost able to hijack Yu Suzuki's AIAS award for Shenmue, but didn't because I'm not evil like that.

Sure it is - I can think of many current-gen RPGs better than FFX. Suikoden 3, Skies of Arcadia Legends, Star Ocean 3... but Square has money and brand recogniation and IF YOU DON'T LOVE FF THE INSANE FANBOYS WILL CURSE YOUR VERY EXISTANCE. Look at the backlash at GameFan for their less-than-positive FF8 review way back.

Look at what I bolded there and tell me if you HONESTLY think a game's sales don't influence its award candidacy, despite the game's quality.

    Okay, I'll bite.

-Why is Half-Life the only game to get more than 50 GotY awards?

    [/ QUOTE ]

I challenge you to prove that this is true. I contend that GTA III has received at least 50 such awards. However, unlike sierra, rockstar doesn't need to brag about it in order to boost sales over an extended time. GTA III and Vice City, taken together, have probably sold more copies than any other game (rough internet estimates of about 9 million each, vs 8 million for Half-Life + expansions and 13 million for Sims + expansions). This occurred with little initial hype, in a much shorter time period, and despite being on an "inferior console." And after all that, I'd still rather play a 15 year old game like R-type.

-Why is it that a simple mod of Half-Life turned into a gaming revolution? COUNTER STRIKE

    [/ QUOTE ]

Counter strike was free, required comparatively little in the way of hardware, and had a "you die = sit out" hook that appeals to addictive psychology.

    [ QUOTE ]
-Why is it that when I go to any store that sells video games, they have tons of Half-Life copies always in stock, including the various Platinum/Collector's editions?

    [/ QUOTE ]

You mean, why has Sierra repeatedly re-released the same game with different fan-created content? Because in a daikatana-like fashion, all valve has been doing for the past 5 years is working on the sequel.

    [ QUOTE ]
-Why is it that whenever I see a "best games of all time" list, Half-Life and Counter Strike are ALWAYS on it, and Ikaruga is never even considered for it?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Ikaruga is an obscure game in a now-unpopular genre from an obscure (to most) developer.

    [ QUOTE ]
-Why would a game that is not good accomplish any of these things?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Nobody said half-life sucked; at most, just that it wasn't TEH B3ST G4m3 EVAR. As zero said, "Not to say that Half-Life isn't a good game. It's just been outdone since it came out."

    [ QUOTE ]
-from your "experienced" point of view, what games have "outdone" Half-Life?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Two very reasonable answers have already been given: Deus Ex and Halo. Both advanced the FPS genre beyond what had been done in half-life.

Now I have a question for you:

Have you even PLAYED ikaruga or silvergun?

Of course he hasn't. Shooters are so passe, all the great magazines giving out awards left and right say so. Who wants to bother perfecting high score routines and learning how to adapt and perfect going through situations when you can play something popular that lets you beat up a hooker for cash?

Gotta say I prefer Dodonpachi and Soukyugurentai over Silvergun, myself.

I don't want to jump too far into this discussion because I feel pandering to this guy's ignorance is precisely what he wants everyone on this board to do, but I did want to point out one little gem of a game that has won countless awards, including the Academy of Interactive Arts and Science Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction and Outstanding Achievement in Character and Story Design as well as awards from the GDC for Excellence in Level Design, Excellence in Visual Arts and the Game Innovation Spotlight award. It has an overall game review rating of 91% on Gamerankings. It's called Ico, it's my favorite game on the PS2 and it hasn't sold more than 200,000 copies in the U.S. Great games get made all the time, and they can receive countless awards and acclaim from magazines. But it came out a month after Devil May Cry, you can't kill hookers in it, and it didn't have commercials on MTV. Oh, it also doesn't have a "Game of the Year" sticker on its front cover. Emp I'm not saying your conclusion is baseless, but it's not supported by your premises in the slightest.

Excellent example! Ico is a title that everyone who plays it seems to fall in love with. The problem is that not enough people know about it to play it!

ICO... wow. I STILL need to buy that game, especially now that it's a Greatest Hits title in Japan. I should ask Video Game Depot to order one up for me.

Good call, Ico is on a very short list of games that have actually made an emotional impact on me.

Has anyone played the PAL version with the unlockable 2-player mode?

My girlfriend owns ICO (I bought it for her), but I could never get into it. I played it for a few hours and just wound up wishing a had a "Smack Yorda" button. Very neat game, but definitely a niche title. Only goofy titles I love that didn't win enough awards are Uniracers (SNES) and Super Monkey Ball (GC). /versus/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Ico sold way less then 200k actually.

OH BTW best and most complete version is the PAL one.

Looks like somebody realized he was making an ass out of himself publically and decided to quit posting in this thread to try and salvage some "reputation" (hardy har har). I think they just realized their "FACTS" lie on shaky foundations...

Were only 200,000 copies made, and how many of the copies made were actually sold?
