Might want to check out this page. Usually all you have to do to deal with your problem is to set your Xbox to use a static IP in it's network settings menu (usually the first three numbers of the address should be 192.168.1, and the fourth can be anything between 1 and 255), and then in your router's configuration page forward the two ports on the page I linked to the IP address you gave your Xbox. After that you should be able to connect to anyone without issues.

As for the whole host versus join debate, I join over 90% of the time. I don't like to host because I constantly get challenged by low ranked players or laggers. But I do notice when I do host my win % really spikes. Normally I have a 50% win rate, which is low, but that's because I only challenge high ranked players most of the time, and I like to repeatedly challenge people who beat me because I have more fun fighting against them. Sorry if I annoyed anyone by doing that... But anyway, when I host I usually win around 80% of my matches, and honestly winning that much bores the crap out of me. Usually the number one reason I quit a game is because it get's too easy, so if my win % got too far above 50% I'd probably quit playing. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
