The only problem with playing 'fair' is that there is undoubtedly someone else who is in the same business as you are, who will not worry about playing fair. If you don't at least keep up with them, then you're out of a job. It's how capitalism works, it's an amoral system. It doesn't care how good you are, just how well you play the rules.

Sometimes, to keep pursuing the career you're in, you have to go against your own grain. Either you do that, and stay in a job that you may very well love 95% of the time, or you refuse to and go find something else.

Just doing your job means doing what it takes to at least stay in a job. It's not backwards thinking. If you wanna get rid of the bullshit media, ignore it. Encourage everyone you can to ignore it. Start a revolution in your area. I'm workin here to my best. You can't go after the media and its workers for doin their jobs, you have to go after the people who keep them employed. Otherwise, by attacking the media, you are only curing the symptom. Sure, they are definately the cause for a few of our problems, but they have little control over it. Because, to stay in the running, you have to do what works. To blatantly ignore that is to doom yourself to losing.

Just like with the artists, if the current 'in' color is yellow, why not make all of your stuff yellow? Sure, you can do it out of principle, but when you get passed over you have no room to bitch that you're not doing as well as everyone else. You know what works, and intentionally not doing it, while it may hold true to yourself, will only hurt your agenda.

Artists (typically) have the freedom to not care what's 'in' so much though, because most of them aren't trying to live solely off their work. The media, however, is.

see, I don't care. Excuses are excuses. "Doing my job" is exactly what kept the trains running on time and the ovens hot.

I think it is incorrect to deem one thing the sympton and the other the cause since both are so tightly wound it is a moebius strip. Regardless, I'm not calling for the abolition of anything and I never attacked the media I just refuse to allow a tired and bullshit excuse to sit.
