Yeah, that Top 50 List was pretty disappointing. It had Beavis and Butthead on it (50th)??? They musta been smoking something *does the smoking gesture*

I think B&B was higher than 50th (or lower, if you will), and I felt that the list served to highlight the near complete crew change of the mag since its inception. I'm only 24, so I know these guys can't be younger than I am (on average, anyway), and I expected to see some classic games on their list. The bulk of the games were from the mid-90's on. I don't think they had a single game before '93 unless it was in a series, and they picked the whole series as one choice (another mistake). To prove to myself that it wasn't just nostalgia, I loaded up Space Quest the other day. Still a kick-ass game after all these years. I let my PCGamer subscription run out after that issue, and I'm not sure if I'll resubscribe any time soon.

Ok. Here are some and writing this is a little disturbing for me because, Christ, it makes me think of the time I've spent playing, but since I don't watch tv I don't feel as bad.

    1. VF3 - Jesus, I can play this game all day if I have an opponent. Living in Taiwan with numerous good players around was like being Robert Downey Jr. on buy-one-bag-of-crack-and-get-the-second-one-free-day.

    2. Zelda sreies - Z1: Game that made me love games. All of them are great.

    3. Mario 64 - So cool and ahead of its time. If you don't recognize its genius, you are probably too worried about what other people will think.

    4. Castlevania Series. At times frustrating, but rewarding. I beat all the nes snes, and psx versions. That fact has gotten me laid more times than I can count.

    5. Mario Kart- all three titles kick ass.

    6. Dragon Warrior 4 - why couldn't we get the snes game here? Dumb Americans can't recognize greatness. That's why the backstreet boys sell more records than fugazi.

    7. FF1 2 & 3- So much cooler than the "Final Fantasy Press-And-Watch" games on the PSX, though nine is not bad.

    8. Metroid (series) Unadulterated platforming and exploring smack!

    9. Mega Man 123 and MMX 123. Very fun. Fuck Dr. Wily.

    10. Crystalis- probably not entirely worthy, but something about this game took ahold of me. When the town got destroyed toward the end of the game, I actually felt a little sad.

    11. Punch Out (series) Very very fun. I once beat Nick Bruiser in less than 21 seconds. I feel slightly pathetic for having done so.

    12. DOA- the original doa is what turned me on to vf because I heard it described as a fisher price Virtua fighter. I really prefered the gameplay to the simpler MK or SF or Dickken, I mean, Tekken, and I had never played vf before.

Most of these games are older. I am not sure if this is because I was younger and more easily entertained then, but I think that with the switch to 3d, games lost a lot of the kinetic pleasure that went along with playing them. I mean compare the control of 8-bit Mario to controlling the character in Resident Evil (and I like Resident Evil). I wish I would have played vf before number three. I did not even play three till the dcast version came out. I never even used an arcade stick till a year ago. I am happy with the skill I have gotten in that year, even if I can only do the DLC from one side consistently. I think that VF4 will take the top spot once I can finally fucking play it.

Okay, here's an update on my personal top 10 list. Basically, it all comes down to the fact that I've recently picked up a used Saturn again (owned one a few years ago) so I could play the copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga that my roommate bought on eBay many moons ago. Needless to say, the game rocks. It's absolutely the finest console RPG I've ever seen. Absolutely essential for all videogame lovers.

Anyway, my personal faves are the ones that I would most want to be stuck with right now; the titles with the most memorable experiences, a good dosage of improvisation, and the "Three A's": Ambiance, Atmosphere, and Ambition.

    1) Zelda 64
    2) Mario 64
    3) Tetris
    4) Ms. Pac-Man
    5) Super Mario (series)
    6) Panzer Dragoon Saga
    7) Super Bomberman 2
    8) Tony Hawk (series)
    9) Virtua Fighter (series)
    10) NiGHTS

And, oh yeah, the honorable mention goes to....DUEL'N FIREMEN!

Everyone here's pretty much listed all the games I loved. But one relatively recent game I played that I really enjoyed was Jet Grind Radio. Great game imho. Original concept, unique look, fun, deep, challenging...spent many hours on that game. One thing I wish they did more often is add multiplayer options to a lot of games. I realize that the DC link cable was pretty much nonexistant, but with part 2 coming out for PS2 (i think?), they should make it at least 2 player. Hell, online play would seem like a great idea, if possible yet...

That's one thing I haven't seem much of lately, yet a great quality in a game: mulitplayer option. Metal Gear would be pretty interesting, since every fight with a boss was nothing more than a duel. Armored Core was so damn cool with the link cable, at least the first one (only one I've really played). Wipeout, awesome. I understand that a majority of people would never get to use these options, but there are those of us that are willing to bring together 2 tvs, 2 PS2's, and have some hella fun! Ah, creativity...how I miss it...

Q: Why was Scooby Doo afraid to go outside?
A: Because it was raining cats & dogs!

    -Snickers candy bar...

Ultimately, we're all dead men, sadly we cannot choose how, BUT we can decide how we meet that end in order that we are remembered as men.
