I'd rather see the top 5 be team captains and the remainder of the teams be random. It'd just make the tournament more interesting, I think.

i definitely do not want anyone to think that we were going to change the tournament setup for just one guy. that is why i posted in this thread, to see if other people had similar issues about the scheduling. kurita himself told me not to worry about the tournament, if the timing wasn't going to work out then he was just gonna try and have fun in LA and play some friendly matches. just to clear things up. if the team setup doesn't sound good to people we can of course punt it, or maybe do it ourselves outside the tournament.

 

Myke: In general if can make it or what is gonna be up. If ANY of Ohio (save KBNova and Josh the Funk for GGXX) will make Evo. Also, if I have the finances to make. And last but not least, if I can afford to miss school to make it up there. To clear up some confusion, what we were talking about was still having the single player tournament, just finishing it all in one day. The feasibility of doing this will be entirely dependent upon actual user turnout. Last year we saw less people than expected and thus finished it more quickly.

After the one player tournament was finished, the top 4 (or maybe 6) were going to pick two other players from the pool and we would have a team tournament in the time that is already alotted to VF on the Saturday night. You know, with people there watching and stuff.

The cool part about doing this is, not only do we get to have a competition to see who is the "best", but more people would get to play in the big ass part of the competition where all the other guys are watching.

We knew that NOBODY would like to travel to Evo just to play for one day. Hence it would almost be two tournaments of sorts, a 1-on-1 tournament and a 3-on-3 tournament.

For time's sake I assume we would do the Japanese format, that is, you play until one side loses. I.e., all 3 people do not play the other 3, it is just until one side loses their three.

Nobody intends to impose this idea on everyone else, but I thought it sounded pretty bitchin. We could also just do "Area" teams, or make teams of friends. It depends on time, and also how to ascertain a competetive tournament (we don't just want all the best guys beating up on everyone else, as that is only fun for 3 people).

Well, that's pretty much the gist of it. I hope we will also get in matches away from the tournament like last year. I think most people had more fun doing that anyhow. I know I did.

I really like the idea of a two tournament evo. Like Myke, I really want to have a team battle, and I was planning on setting one up outside of Evo. I think this format will give more people a chance to play, and will further motivate people in the losers bracket. I also think that a team battle will be more interesting to watch for potential virtua fighter players as they get to see more characters and styles in action.

I only hope that we can fit everything in an hour with all the bells and whistles and everything.

 

im down for whatever but just use the results of the singles tourney for the placement of members on the regional teams. i hate when these things come down to perceptions of players skill as opposed to how they actually do.

This sounds great, this team battle thing. However, don't jump your guns, they may not let you... they might think it'll take too much time or something. So lets run EVERYTHING by the coordinators before we start planning.

I know that I'm not going to be there until late Friday afternoon, so maybe someone can register for me ... =P We'll have to see. I want to play in the tournament because I feel like the US VF players should represent and promote our game as much as we can at big events like these.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to just chilling, drinking, and playing VF with you guys again... =)

Well, it looks like after much arguing with their travel agency, Kurita and Bear Crusher are going to be able to stay an extra day, which means that he will be able to participate in the 1-on-1 finals, should he qualify.

Still though, team battle sounds like tons of fun to me.

Guess we'll have to leave it to a vote.

 

Even though I'm not going, i wonder if anyone would like the idea of a small tourney for each character? Single elimination, and if each player chooses two characters to participate with, since each player will still be losing twice, it will last the same as a full double-elmination tournament (except organizing it would be harder). I think it'd be a fun way to go, but so would team.

 

Keep the ideas coming! I like the two different character one, so we can see all of them played at a tourney. Myself, I would like to see random select teams picked from a hat, so nobody feels shoved aside like the good old kickball days.

Well besides the main VF4 evo tourney that I will be participating in. If there is going to be a team tourney on that Saturday, then I'm all in for it. I also would like to get the chance to play against everyone that is coming to Evo before or after the tourneys.
