I think I'm sat in the middle somewhere.

There are people that I know I'll struggle against and there are people I'm confident I will beat.

Can't wait to get this started though. I just bought Xbox Live again for this.

"No other choice" is probably a little bit too harsh...u did an offline-event by yourself...doesn´t this motivate people to play more if they know there is a nice tourney they can go to?
Players might not quit playin` or definitely change the game...if so it would be sad...but this won`t happen with quite some players i know.
I think casuals do not get boring for quite a lot of guys. This depends on the players. I haven´t done online tourneys and still "enjoy" online matches with the people who play regularly...

If one reads this thread that person might get an impression which is too pessimistic about the community. I know we don`t have the "big lobby" but u gotta relativize that a little.

Surely online tourney are probably much more easier to do than offline events and motivate quite a sum of players...but for me one offline event a year motivates me more than any online-thing...

Don´t get me wrong...i would be happy if as much people play as possible....online-t`s seem to be an easy method...but i will always focus more on offline-meetings which can/should motivate people to keep playin` VF.

Ya, but as it stands, there aren't any offline events to prepare for. WCG isn't gonna select VF again for 2010, only chance of this happening would be if WCG decides to be stupid. Of course they've done this very often in the past, but still, it'd go beyond most of their previous stupidity to select VF over SF4 or Tekken 6 (this is purely looking at it from a commercial standpoint), I think VF is the superior game).

And as for community-organised events; though it was awesome, only 5 foreign players showed up for the Amsterdam. I don't think Bob and Jeneric would show up for another event (haven't talked to them since the gathering, but I assume they've left VF to play other games, since they had already pretty much done that before Amsterdam happened. So that leaves Marly, MP and Mister, these guys might show up again, but that's only three guys. This is not a lot of people.

Also, (trying not to be arrogant or selfish) the fact that it doesn't cost me a lot of trouble to go 10-0 on these guys makes it less attractive for me to put time or money into an event like this. It's not so bad when I'm organising it, but when it's in another country, say Italy, I'm not sure I'd want to go if there's not at least one player there that can consistently kick my ass, or at least go about 50/50 with me. I mean, it's awesome to play people and see them grow over the course of a weekend, especially if it's cool people like the ones mentioned above, but if there's noone that can bring out the best in me, then it just doesn't seem like a good investment of my time (I think almost everyone feels like that)..

With online tournaments happening regularly, rivalries could develop. Things like 'man, I would so kick your ass in an offline tournament, you better come to that next gathering in London!' might encourage players to travel. Basically, there'd be a lot more potential players for offline happenings. I think doing well at online tournaments giving players the benefit of having a good seeding at offline events (although it might give out the wrong message a bit) will be even more of an encouragement.

I also think this is a way to get people interested without someone having to bug people with spamming messages that an offline gathering is happening.

Of course, most of this isn't realistic, but if even one more player gets interested by this, then, at this moment, that's enough.

In short, one good offline event a year would be plenty to keep me going as well, but as it stands, that's too much to ask for. I think online tournaments would help to improve the current situation.

EDIT: Reread my post and reworded some stuff

    We now have prizes!!!!!!!!
Thanks to the kind folk at Xbox World 360 magazine, we have t-shirts and a copy of Dirt 2 or Operation Flashpoint 2 for the winner of the tournament. Many thanks to them for supporting the scene.
18 players confirmed now, so that's excellent.

I have compiled a list of everyone's XBL names, everyone will need to play everyone else. I'm going to put people into groups of 6 and you will play everyone in that group over the course of a weekend, it's up to you to arrange times that weekend. These are NOT different brackets, you will end up playing EVERYONE in the group, so it is completely fair.
The first play for all of you will be the weekend of the 12th December. There seems little point waiting until the 8th January as was originally planned, but if anyone has any problems please PM me.

Having prizes could have attracted more players that wouldn't have perhaps entered beforehand.

If you wait a while before sorting the brackets then a few more may join up.

Out of question u wanna face a player who is at least as strong as u are in a tourney. This is one requirement for me too.

Personally i dislike this kind of motivation respectively the rivalry thing online. One assumes that u take an online match quite serious then...it might work though with some people...

Overall i agree with this statement. There is quite some effort to get good players together somewhere in europe...this is also a matter of money.

OK here it is. These are the groups that you will play in THIS WEEKEND (12-13 Dec), or before hand if it's convenient. You need to contact each other before the weekend and arrange a time to play that suits you both.

So just to clarify, play everyone in your group of 6 and then both private message me the result. Best of 5 rounds, first to 5 games (so best of 9).
    Good luck everyone!

Just to clear up some confusion, you will play EVERYONE, the groups will rotate players over the next few weeks so it's totally fair!

The last group in that list, please check as there are 2 more people added. 24 people altogether is pretty good! With the exception of possibly Akairyu, that is it for players in this tournament. Anyone can join next time though. Please arrange exact times of playing (take into account time zone differences) so that it makes it set in stone, and if your opponent doesn't tuirn up then it's a forfeit!
