Re: Van fans check out the new 7-11-02 vid!

There is a cold pint of whatever you like waiting for you whenever you get to NYC CreeD. ( deep bow). I could'nt access it this AM and will try tomorrow again in the early AM. I will be at www.chinatownfair.com early ( pre-open) to practice and battle all who can get there. I will also make a visit on the Saturday of the NYCG3.

How to convert WMV to AVI

Here ya go vicious. We've got a minor problem if you're on a mac. I don't know mac tools or if it's even possible on a mac. But if it's useful I'll show how to do it on a PC. Maybe you can use that info to figure out whether it's doable for you.

    What you need:
Windows Media Encoder 7.1 (we'll call it WME). Virtualdub 1.3

The conversion in a nutshell -
-change a current, new type of .wmv or .asf to an older type of .wmv/asf
-rename the movie to .asf so virtualdub can read it.
-convert the old-type .wmv to any type of AVI (including divx)

LEGAL DISCLAIMER: Microsoft loves to get people converting TO .wmv, but they don't like anyone converting FROM .wmv ... that's why we need an old version of virtualdub. When 1.3 was released, microsoft sent the programmers a friendly letter explaining that they didn't have the right to tinker with microsoft's proprietary codecs. So the ability to handle .asf or .wmv was taken out of later versions. Does that mean this conversion or the program are illegal? I don't think so, and don't really care.

    Now on to the tutorial.
    1. Install WME and Virtualdub.
    2. Run WME and choose Session ---> New Session Wizard.
--Choose the bottom option (convert) and click next.
--Browse for the .wmv you want to convert. Note that when it suggests a filename for the file to create, it will be the same as the source's filename. Change that. Like if the file to convert is daioh_02520chibi24.wmv change the file to create to daioh_02520chibi24_b.wmv
--Choose the bottom option (play directly on computer) and click next.

    4. Here's the important part. If you want to cheat, download this and put it in
    C:\Program Files\Windows Media Components\Encoder\Profiles
and then skip directly to step 5. If you don't wanna cheat (recommended)...

--The profile we want to choose determines the size/quality of the movie we create/convert. The profile we want doesn't exist yet, so we'll have to make it. Click Create and Manage Profiles.
    --Click New.
--Give it a name. I called mine "A_Converter" so it would be at the top of the alphabetical list. Click next.
--Check the bottom option "high bandwidth 3" and click next.
--Now the key... in the middle is a "video" section with Video Codec and Video Size. Change Video Codec to "Windows Media MPEG-4 video V3" and the video size should be 320x240. Click finish.
--Click close on the next screen.

    5. Click the dropdown list of profiles and search for your custom profile (A_converter if you cheated, or whatever you called it if not) ... click Finish.

Your movie should now begin converting to the old type of WMV. If it doesn't happen automatically, the start button is on the bottom right.

Ok we're almost done. To convert the old-style WMV to avi,

    1. Rename your freshly converted wmv to asf, like if you had
    daioh_02520chibi24.wmv
    and converted it to
    daioh_02520chibi24_b.wmv
    now rename it to
    daioh_02520chibi24_b.asf

    2. Run virtualdub 1.3 and choose File ---> Open Video File. Browse for your renamed .asf
    3. Click Audio ---> Direct Stream Copy
    4. Click Video ---> Direct Stream Copy
    5. Flick File ---> Save AVI ... and give it a filename. Remember to give it a .avi extension at the end.

It should only take a few seconds to change the video container from .asf to .avi ... and you're done.

    =======================================================
For mac people, I was able to find a precursor to windows media encoder (the windows media software development kit) for macintosh.
    The download is here.

The hard part is finding a macintosh app that can read .asf's and convert them to .avi's (or anything else). For that, I'm stumped. My best guess is Adobe Premiere for macintosh, but that costs some money. Maybe someone who does video editing on a mac wants to pep up here. There's a guy on #vfhome named Baobab who routinely fools with editing on the Mac. I'll give him a try and post here if I find anything.

Re: How to convert WMV to AVI

    hey thanks for the love.

If only I could figure out how to make premiere stop crashing every two minutes, I'd be a movie editing pimp.

Quick edit: my method produces something that plays, but sound may be desynched.
To fix this issue, do some compression on both the audio and video. Obviously this will give nicer filesizes too. I recommend divx video + mp3 sound.
