Anyone still playing VF5 on PS3?

I wouldn't be caught dead playing the PS3 version of the game unless I had a Full HD HDTV. If your display is either a HD Ready TV or a nice TFT monitor, just make sure you hook up an Xbox 360 via VGA cable, not a damn PS3.
I'm using my Xbox 360 on a Samsung SyncMaster 913N. It's a SXGA monitor (1280×1024, 5:4 ratio) and it looks absolutely beautiful. The horizontal lines of resolution are very close to that of full HD, but the display costs a fraction and probably beats most Full HD TVs in terms of colour and response time. Sure, it's not widescreen, but I think widescreen is really pointless for fighting games (whilst it's essential for FPSs, for example).
In a nutshell, bless Microsoft for having made xbox 360 VGA-enabled...

I actually sold my PS3 version (and PS3 stick) as soon as the 360 version came out. Wont come close to the 360's very very entertaining online play - can't beat it!

Trust me, if you saw PS3 VF5 on any good widescreen LCD, you're jaw would drop! It looks amazing, extremely crisp and full of color.

So, I'll be joining you guys online soon (just waiting for my arcade stick to arrive in the mail). Since the Xbox360 I'll be buying will not have HDMI output (like the PS3 has), what will be the best cables to use for connecting it to an LCD flat panel (for the best picture)?

I've been playing the game in the arcade, so I guess it's kind of like PS3 version since it's Ver B.

    Throwmasta: use component.

I figured component, but wanted to be sure. Thanks Srider, and how/why are you playing arcade version B? Just curious...

If your HDTV is HD Ready (i.e. native resolution is 1366×768) go for VGA, so that the Xbox will offer you to set the resolution to 1360×768 and avoid the rescaling you would have feeding 720p through component.

If your HDTV is Full HD (i.e. native resolution is 1920×1080) I'd still go with VGA but in that case Component can output the exact resolution of the panel too, so it's a matter of taste in colours and stuff. The important thing is that, either way, the evil of rescaling is avoided.

My HDTV is full 1080 (Sony XBR2). Would VGA look better than component cables?? As far as colors go and such...?

Here in Shanghai we have bustling arcades filled with VF5 cabs. Instant competition as long as you go at the right times.

It's a matter of personal taste. If your HDTV/Monitor/whatever has a VGA socket is of good quality, then yu should have no problems with the colours. Note that the final decision could be taken on the basis of the options that the component channel and VGA channel have on your HDTV. For example, many Samsung HDTVs have the interesting "game mode" option (screen refresh is higher) only for component. Your Xbox 360 should come with a component cable. Stick to that at the moment, if you get a chance of a friend or somebody who could lend you the VGA cable, try it.

Srider: even if it is version B (that's what I'm still playing on PS3)...lucky you; most of us don't have access to good comp, without having to play online.

Franz: Thanks for the helpful tips, I always thought component was the only way to go if HDMI wasn't an option.

I play it on PS3. I don't have an XBox 360 yet. And when I get an XBox 360, I'll get it for the online play, but I'll still play the PS3 version more. I'm a pad player and the XBox 360 pad sucks for fighting games. Especially Virtua Fighter. I played in a 360 VF5 tournament and I couldn't do any of my staple Brad combos. I'd be executing certain moves and a lot of times, something totally different came out. It pretty much cost me the tournament. Lost my very first match but somehow managed to get 2nd in the tournament. I would have won that if I had my PS3 or PS2 controller. But yeah, PS3 version for me.

Heh, almost thought you were with us in Poznan, Poland. We had the same situation with 360 VF5 tournament. The pads sucked, it was hard to play Wolf with that shit in my hands :p Anyway... Xbox pads suck ! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

I'm getting the 360 next month but I dont know if I can leave the PS3 alone bc I'm so used to that pad.
I want to make the transition to stick but it's going to take a while. I'm going to be online just getting my ass kicked the first couple of months. I hope there's an adapter that allows me to play with the PS3 controller on the 360 effectively sometime soon.

I play the PS3 version as well. I refuse to reward Microsoft's underhanded marketing tactics with my money.

Well done, instead, on rewarding Sony, who made a console which can't output VGA, hoping you'll buy one of their Bravia HDTVs.

Right, because HDMI, component video, s-video, and composite video are all proprietary standards owned by sony, which you can only get by buying a sony bravia tv . . . oh wait, no, they're not, they're industry standards implemented on almost every HDTV. Unlike, y'know, VGA, which most TVs don't have.

The reason the ps3 doesn't have vga out is to reduce copying of 1080p content, plain and simple.

Couldn't you copy 1080p content from YPbPr?

Haven't really seen an HDTV with no VGA input. The fact is HD displays existed since... 15 years ago? They were called VGA monitors. Surprise! They even supported resolutions higher than 1080p, funny, isn't it? OK, they were bulky and rarely exceed 20 inches or so. But they were also lag-free and had the best colours ever, let alone the fact that any person with a desktop PC had one.

In its early days, home videogaming could spread more easily because everybody had a TV in his/her house. You just needed to buy the console. I don' see why, 20 or 30 years later, one shouldn't be able to exploit a diffused technology such as VGA monitors to enjoy high-definition. No, you have have to buy an HDTV. With lag and not-so-good colours. And make sure it is Full HD, else your 720p signals will be rescaled to 768 lines...
If there's one thing Microsoft got right, ever, is enabling Xbox 360 to output VGA (and with a nice variety of resolutions)...

OK, it is probably an exageration to say that PS3 doesn't have VGA to foster sales of HDTVs (although I'm sure Sony management are well aware of this) and the reason you give seems more realistic. Anyhow, the problem remains.

    Sorry for being OT...

Not all HDTV's have lag and not so good colors. The colors my HDTV displays are amazingly crisp and vibrant. Also, there is absolutely no lag (on top of the fact that it has a "game mode" in it's menu).

I have read that there is lag in older DLP rear projection sets, but I've recently heard that this problem has been corrected as well.

Now that I had a chance to truly see just how good the 360 version is I really hate the 360 controller for it. The controllers kills my thumbs and it doesn't have the precision of the PS3 controller. That means I will most certainly play the PS3 version now unless a method comes about that lets me play the PS3 control on the 360. The controllers are all that bad however the thing is I can't play an Akira with that controller with the lack the precision the controller has. I still like playing the game but the controllers forces me to adjust my style too much compared to when I play the flawless PS3 controller.

If I wanted to use 19-year old technology, I wouldn't have bought a next-gen system at all.
