Why not weapons based VF spinoff?

First. VF is the best virtual martial arts simulation on the planet.

Second. weapons have been a part of most martial arts for thousands of years.

Third. If anybody would get weapons in a fighter right it would be the AM2 team and VF.

I'm not talking about MK style, but a legitimate treatment.

The VF franchise has to be allowed to grow. Maybe that means a spinoff, maybe that means adding a new dimension to VF. Anything that gives more life to this game is a good thing!

It used to be said that AM2/Sega would never add online play. Now we've got online play. I think online play is going to expand the fan base (even if only by a little)

Now we're saying there shouldn't be and never will be weapons in VF.

If the weapons thing is done right, why not?

Not only did they add online play but I feel like they did a really good job making it fast and un-laggy... Online VF5 is VERY fun!

Yes and a spin-off would be a good place to add weapons. But not the mainstream Virtua Fighter name. There's a big difference between adding weapons, and adding online play.

Online Play: The gameplay pretty much stays the same with a bit of lag depending, but the mechanics never change.

Weapons: The gameplay elements and the mechanics change drastically. And you have to change the flavor of the game itself.

Plus adding weapons to Virtua Fighter itself would turn off many players including myself. Now, they could take the VF engine and put in different characters, each with weapons and that would actually be fun. But I don't want to see Jacky in any extent swinging a nunchaku.

Wasn't that what Last Bronx was supposed to be?

Yeah, Last Bronx was their attempt at a weapons based fighter. It didn't catch on however.

Please bare with me on this. I really want to understand the pros and cons on the topic.

I agree that a spin off would be best, but if they changed the main game in such a way that.

Weapon matches are optional, and both fighters use them during a match if they are used, how would the mechanics change?

Wouldn't we still have all of the same OM, throw escapes, sabakis, etc. Sure the animations would change, but if both fighters have a weapon shouldn't the mechanics be the same?
Or would short range and long range attacks have to be changed
    in some way?

When you say elements would drastically change, which elements do you mean (the customization stuff?)

Again, I was on the side with most people who thought that online play would change the nature of VF and that VF online wouldn't be VF. From what I hear Sega has done a reasonable job in not changing the nature of the game (I only do Playstation)

Which mechanics would actually have to change to accommodate weapons?

Which gameplay elements would have to change to accommodate weapons?

As a man trained in the use of weapons (Different types of swords, maces, tonfas, and a marksman with a rifle) I can tell you weapons change everything. There's different range on weapons and weapon quality. And remember, AM2 believes in full realism.

There would subsequently be a drastic change in quality of characters. Balance would go out the window. It would be a return to when Mileena rocked EVERYONE on MK2.

Plus weapons aren't really wanted by most of us. Let's not rework that wheel. If it makes you feel better, just think of everyone wearing steeltoes, and the ones with gloves have them loaded.

Lost me there. VF has realistic elements, but isn't realistic much at all, really.

    Ahem... second best.

Why a spin off? Why not a full blown new game with new characters?

Though I could picture Akira (Yari or Katana), Lau (Dao), Pai (Jian), Kage (Ninjato or Kama with chain), Lei Fei (Bo), and Aoi (Naginata) with weapons, the rest wouldn't make sense. Swords and spears held by characters from the 20th century= stupid.

Dave when I come up next I will bring some Last Bronx with me and you will see how Sega has handled weapon based brawlers in the past.

Cool Wall thanks, I'd like to try it.

I don't think VF really even needs weapons. Save it for those based on weapons games anyway. Though Sebo, I'd like to add a few more. Goh (Switchblade or Butterfly Knife), Vanessa (Tonfa), and Wolf (Chair or Sledgehammer).

I'm with KrsJin. People like to throw around the word "realism" for this game when it isn't.

But anyways, I'd like to see a Virtua Wielder. They could also eventually throw in Virtua Tag Team as another mode some day. Tag grabs and tag intros/outros ftw. VF team battle, anyone?

Is this just an oblique attempt at creating a fighting vipers thread?

yeah, but fighting vipers is the only game ever that i got to repeatedly quote one of my favorite movies ever in mid-scrap: "i brained the motherfucker with my ax!!!" everytime i brought that flying-v down on someone's head . . .

ah fighting vipers how I wish it were a better game, well good enough that they'd make a good sequel to it ala VF4evo with great training mode options. I liked the kid with the skateboard cuz he'd smack you with it. Those things hurt man. . . a lot

I actually prefer Vipers over Megamix, and despite Megamix being the better game there's just something about it that irritates me.

That said, Raxel had the cooler FV2 version of Detroit Lockdown in Megamix, so that was a pro.

Of course you're right on several levels. The martial arts moves, blocking, etc are based in fantasy, but the realism of VF is in the fact that like most sports there is a certain amount chance, risk, but mostly a great deal of skill required. There is typically many many ways to express that skill in a sport and so it is with VF. In VF the available options on defense, the options on offensive, the risk/reward factor, the physical dexterity, the possibilities of style, the strategy of what to do in round 1 vs round 2 vs round 3,etc the mechanics of
VF contact, the creativity supported all give it the sense of realism that we are talking about. Its the realism of a sport and how you play it. While other fighters have various aspects of this VF has it all and takes it to the limit.

Take that realism and then associate it with Akira, AOI, GOH, etc and thats what a lot of people mean when they say realism of VF. Also the fact that visually VF doesn't have fireballs, Ice Clouds, poison mist, disappear-reappear escapes (although kage has one or two questionable moves) helps give the feel of realism.

I guess this thread is right on the weapons, they might work somewhat for some of the fighters nicely and would be tricky or inappropriate for others.

Did anybody see the mix of weapons in Namco's Urban Reign?
There was a little potential there. Some of those weapons
would fit Brad, Wolf, Goh, Jacky, and Jeffrey.

But I guess if they added weapons that would make Dural one nasty....
