    They were pretty bland IMO, just the square ring with 2D backdrops of clouds or trees...I think it was dusk in Dural's stage...nothing special with the possible exception of Sarah's stage which was the city lit up at night while the arena floor looked like something out of the Billie Jean video, if memory serves me correctly. Someone on this board might have the pics...a quick google search netted nada for me...good luck.

    I know it's not much, but then again VF1 backgrounds weren't much...
    I got these through a brief google image search but further google searching might yield more.

    The stages were a box (the ring you fight in, each with its own floor texture), the endless ground surrounding the ring, and some sort of bitmapped sky.

    Akira got the nice dark yellow and black sky shown in the first pic I think, with a bland checkerboard pattern. Jeffry of course got the third pic with a yellow strip for sand and blue and white for surf. Sarah's stage was the best, the floor grid was made up of brightly lit squares, you fought at night with a city in the backdrop. I guess Lau got the helipad with the generic plateau in the background shown in the second link. At least one stage (fifth link) had the nifty stone texture for the floor but an otherwise nondescript background. Wolf I think was the owner of the sort of metallic floor + dunes one. Just as a quick aside, I always felt wolf's VF2 stage was the best, ideawise, it reminds us wolf's Canadian. In the others there isn't any ethnic flava.

    jacky = rock-like ring with cracks, beach/sea backdrop
    jeffry = helipad-type ring with grand canyon-ish backdrop
    kage = rock slab ring with forest and mount fuji backdrop
    lau = metal ring with desert backdrop
    pai = wooden ring with watery backdrop
    wolf = checkerboard ring with red dusk backdrop
    akira = checkerboard ring with yellow dusk backdrop
    sarah = as creed described
    dural = enormous version of jeff's helipad ring with akira's backdrop

    Oh, thank you for those beautiful shots.. I gotta say... I feel your description of Sarah's stage didn't quite capture just how cool it was. The colors, the underlighting... brilliant work, and I feel that we're really missing out not having an updated version of it in VF4... I hope someone can find a pic...?
